Ashes to Ashes Marbled white halls Tainted black by crimson flames Chaos Taints every heart Yet only the pure are blamed Honour Is a blade In a soldier’s hand Virtue Is the fire That consumes homes Valor Is a fight With a torn backbone Consistency Is the sacrifice Of tranquility Loyalty Is the shame Of dying in someone’s name Pride Is a pale flower On a hero’s grave From ashes all has been built And to ashes all shall crumble I. Introduction Four hundred years ago the province of Caedes finally became an independent kingdom, after a long and exhausting struggle against the empire of Emperor Lucius IV. The legendary war hero Matthias became their king by popular demand, and he appointed a council to assist him, as he was, after all, a warrior. The ravaged countrysides were slowly restored to fields with waves of grain, played by the wind as a gentle sea. The buildings, turned to ashes, were reshaped into architectural masterpieces. The “Marble City” was built on the place where the final battle took place, and weeks after that, the peace between the Empire and Caedes was signed. It would be the palace for the future generations of rulers. Those rulers, however, would not be Matthias’ progeny. Matthias confirmed what everyone already feared three years after the independence. He wasn’t a leader suited for times of peace. He resigned his post, and was replaced by his strategist in war and advisor in times of peace named Jason. Matthias assigned to himself the low post of Border Guard Captain and spent the remainder of his life hunting thugs and brigands along the borders of the young kingdom, until he died at the age of 57 from an old arrow wound. His body rests in the very core of the Marble City, the hanging gardens, a man-shaped miracle. And as of right now, his progeny still stakes their lives on the battlefield. Be it against foreign tribes or brigands, this legendary line of warriors has been the shield and sword of Caedes. Ever since Jason took the crown and dubbed the era the Years of Prosperity, starting at the first Year of Prosperity at the day of initiation. Caedes became a dominant power in the surrounding region, and lasted long after the fall of the Empire, one hundred and three years after the Indepedence wars. They dominated the jewelry trade, and their building arts were known across the world. The kingdom prospered under the Jason Clarice family line. Though Matthias wasn’t a politician or king, he knew the values of people, and this was excellently shown by his choice for Jason. Caedes annexed the nearby countries, kingdoms and tribes and rivaled the power of the Empire which they broke free from. It has been said, however, that a country built on conquest will face a similar end. That buildings built from ashes will always be just ashes, and will never be able to uphold another form than ash. It has been said that a pact of peace signed on the corpses of soldiers is a declaration of war in the long run. It has been said that nothing lasts forever. Not even the Marble City. To the North of Caedes lies Solix, a deep-religious empire led by the Holy Father Theodorus V. When the small province of Veron was annexed by Caedes in the 398th Year of Prosperity, Theodorus laid claim to it, preaching it was a holy ground, and that refusing to yield to those demands would not be taken kindly. Gregor III, the ruler of Caedes, simply mocked those claims, and when the fifth Patriarchal emmisary laid out his list of demands, he got so insulted that he ordered the emmisaries nose cut off and his eyes pierced, and gave him a letter that “The mighty kingdom of Caedes would never allow a zealot to take away the prosperity of the Marble kingdom, the pearl of the continent Aroxia.” True to their reputation as faithful, Theodorus V wrote a declaration of war. The Years of Prosperity had ended, and a new war had begun. Gregor III asked Hector, descendant of Matthias, to take up arms and to lead the forces of Caedes under the title Grand Marshall. Naturally, Hector agreed. Blacksmiths forged a silver and purple suit of armor for him, unparalleled in both armor value and beauty. The peasant’s tales of the return of a legend spread like wildfire across the land, and the ranks of the army’s conscripts sky-rocketed. The economy was quickly transformed into a war-economy. Caedes was prepared to live up to its history. With Hector leading them and the economic, political and strategic genius of Gregor III, with their unwavering devotion, their strong economy and advanced technology they would soon double their territory, and create an empire that would last a thousand years upon a thousand years! But it soon appeared that all those factors weren’t enough to shift the momentum in their favor. The religious conviction of Solixians knew no bounds. And two years afterwards, the battles had reached a standstil just inside the Solixian borders. Battle after battle was won by Caedes, but the Solixian armies knew no defeat. No major defeat. Their lines quickly replenished with fresh recruits, and their morale never crushed. Political unrest was brewing. People were objecting against the war, and pleading for peace. It is here that this tale continues. It is here that the tale of heroes will be told, and the fate of peoples written. From ashes it has been formed, and to ashes it will crumble. |
