------------------------------------

In the end of the year 200 China was at war. After many bloody battles the land was divided into three between Wu, Shu and Wei. At this point Shu had an alliance with Wu, who was never Shu’s true enemy, against their mutual foe: Wei. But what would happen if a top general from Shu falls in love with a top general of Wei. Would their love prevail or will the chaos of the land keep them separated? This is their tale…

It was a beautiful day, the sun stood high in the sky and there was a small breeze. On a lonely mountain stood a man all alone watching the view. “what a nice day” he said, he could feel the wind blow softly through his dark brown hair. He looked down to see the grassy plains dance on the symphony of the wind. He closed his eyes and started to picture the face of the one he loved. “I wish you were here with me” he said underneath his breath. ‘I miss him so much’ he thought while a tear fell down his beautiful face. He opened his eyes and stared at the horizon of mountains. He remembered the offer that was made not so long ago…

**flashback**
“sir lord Ma Chao is here to see you”. “let him in” he answered the maid. “Ah Ma Chao what brings you here?” he asked his fellow tiger general. “ I have a marriage proposal for you” he said. “a marriage proposal?” he said quite surprised. Ma Chao could hear that he was surprised, but continued “yes for my sister, she is willing to marry you if you answer yes of course”. “ I’m sorry but I’m afraid I’ll have to decline”. “oh”, Ma Chao said disappointed. Hearing his fellow general’s disappointment he quickly said: ”I’m sorry”. “its alright Zhao Yun, but why don’t you have or take a wife?” Ma Chao asked. Zhao Yun could feel sweat running of his back after that last question. He desperately tried to remember the words he used When Zhao Fan asked him that question. “first I rather make a name of myself before I settle down” he answered when he finally remembered the words. ‘he said that like he was reading it of a piece of paper’ Ma Chao thought, but said nothing. Ma Chao left and Zhao Yun sighted.
**end of flashback**

‘that was a close one’ He thought closing his eyes once more. ‘I hate lying but its not like I have a chose if I told him the truth who knows what he would have done’ Zhao Yun sighted. “lord Zhao Yun !!”
the shouting brook Zhao Yuns train of thoughts and he turned around. “yes, what’s the matter?”. “Master Zhuge Liang asks why you aren’t at the meeting yet”. “tell him I’ll be right there”. The messenger nodded and ran off. ‘I totally forgot about the meeting, I better get going even if I don’t want to’. The tiger general mounted his horse and rode off.

Meanwhile in Wei…

A young man who was almost as beautiful as Zhao Yun entered a room filled with officers of talent and valour. “sorry I’m late master Sima Yi, but I lost track of time”. “hmm its nothing just sit down so that we can get started”. The man sat down next to a general who had only one eye. Sima Yi putted a map on the table and started to explain. “we will make the first move by attacking Shu” he pointed out some things on the map and continued “Zhang He I want you to lead the van and… Zhang He what’s wrong?”. The young man, Zhang He, stared at the map. ‘attack Shu? But what if I have to face him…’. “zhang He are you alright?”. “yes I’m fine” he said while still staring at the map. “ok lets continue so like I was saying I would like you to lead the van and keep the enemy at bay, understood?”. Zhang He wanted to say no but he had no chose so he agreed. “Cao Zhen will be you’re second in command oh and Zhang He I advise you get some sleep you don’t look so well”. “I will” he looked around, everybody seemed glad that they were finally going to attack Shu. After the meeting Zhang He went to his room and started thinking.
‘what if I have to face and kill the person I love I would never by able to do such a thing’. He closed his eyes in an attempt to fall asleep, but the thought of having to face his beloved kept him awake. “wait a minute I’m not even sure if his going to be there I have no reason to think he will”. With that in mind he eventually fell asleep.
The next morning…

“mmm Zhao… no!” Zhang He jumped up, breathing like he just had a running contest against Red Hare. “wha…?”, he looked around and took a breath of relief. “it was just a nightmare” he looked outside just in time to see sunrise. It was gorgeous yet it made him sad. It reminded him of the day that he and Yunnie watched sunrise together. He got out bed and dressed himself. ‘I forgot to ask when the campaign against Shu starts’. He slowly walked in the direction of Sima’s room ‘you would expect that a strategist tells you something important like that immediately’. On his way he ran into Cao Zhen who stopped and asked where he was going. “I’m going to ask Sima when the campaign starts” he replied calmly. Then all of a sudden Cao Zhen bursts out in a laugh. “what so funny?” he asked surprised. “you really weren’t paying attention during the meeting, were you?” Cao Zhen said still half laughing. “what do you mean?” Zhang He asked. “Sima told us that we are leaving tomorrow”. “really? I didn’t know”. “come on lets do some sparring until lunch” Cao Zhen suggested. “ok fine with me”. The day went by quite quickly and Zhang He was very tired. “see ya tomorrow and don’t forget that were leaving at daybreak ” Cao Zhen said with a laugh. “don’t worry, I won’t”. zhang He tried to fall asleep as soon as possible, but was kept awake until midnight by his worries for the campaign and Zhao Yun.
The following day the Wei forces gathered together on a giant plain ready to march. ‘this is it no turning back now all I can do is hope that I don’t have to face Zhao Yun’, with that prayer in mind Zhang He marched.

Back in Shu…

‘I hope he doesn’t want me to lead the campaign’ Zhao Yun thought while he was running towards the meeting place. “you’re late that’s not like you Zilong” a man dressed entirely in white said when Zhao Yun entered the room. “I know and I’m sorry it won’t happen again” Zhao Yun bowed. “well you’re excused this time, sit down” Zhao Yun took a seat next to a young, quite beautiful officer. “alright as you all know from the last meeting, Wei is attacking us” the white man, Zhuge Liang, paused for a moment waiting for the generals to be quiet until he continued. “I have made a plan to repel this northern invasion” he took a map and putted on the table. “the main army will exist out of Ma Chao, Huang Zhong and Wei Yan”. ‘phew at least I won’t have to lead’ Zhao Yun thought happily. “Zhao Zilong I want you to take the side path and meet the enemy there but don’t rush out carelessly”. “understood” Zhao said thinking there was little chance that he would have to face his beloved in such an unimportant side path. “last but not least…,” the young general next to Zhao Yun blushed after these words “…Jiang Wei will be your strategist”. “oh before I forget we leave tomorrow just after sunrise” Zhuge Liang quickly added. The next day the Shu forces gathered and began their march which took 2 weeks. When Zhao Yun finally arrived at his destination the Wei army was already there. “ok we’ll act according to Zhuge Liang’s instructions” Zhao Yun said to his officers upon arriving. “if they challenge us accept but do not get carried away, understood?” “yes, sir” they all said.

2 days later…

“lord Zhao Yun, someone is challenging our commander, that’s you”. “who is it?” “I think its Zhang He, sir”. ‘what?! Zhang He…’. “tell him that I accept” Zhao Yun said thinking that if he would fight he could prevent Zhang He from getting hurt by someone else. Zhao Yun took his armour and spear and went out to face his beloved. When Zhang He saw who the enemy commander was he felt like his nightmare was going to become true. They looked in each others eyes both not knowing what to do, but when Zhang He saw Zhao Yun wink he immediately understood and charged at him. They didn’t really fight but it seemed real enough for the other officers. “meet me tonight on that hill on your right, the one with the cottage” Zhao Yun whispered to Zhang He while they were in a deadlock. After the deadlock they both retreated nobody pursued or wondered why there commanders retreated ‘cause both sides had orders to keep the enemy at bay and not to charge out. That night Zhao Yun managed to sneak out of the camp unnoticed. ‘I hope he’ll be able to make it’. When Zhao arrived Zhang wasn’t there yet so he looked at the stars while waiting for him. He thought about last time that they were together. He sunk so deep into his thoughts that he didn’t hear Zhang He approach. “guess who, handsome” Zhang He said while he hugged Zhao Yun from behind. Zhao Yun didn’t see Zhang He but he recognised his soft and enchanting voice. “zhangie I’m so glad that you made it” Zhao Yun said while turning around to see his lovers beautiful face. “I would do anything to be with you” Zhang He pulled Zhao Yun closer again. They were silent for a minute or two. “yunnie I’m so happy when I’m with you, so happy that I don’t even care if they would caught us now”. Zhao Yun felt very warm inside after these words, he looked in Zhang’s bright blue eyes while saying “I feel exactly the same way”. He then closed the little space that was left between them by placing a passionate kiss on his lovers warm lips. They both wanted that moment to last forever. When the kiss broke Zhang He rested his head on Zhao Yun chest. “why isn’t there a way that we didn’t have to sneak around like this, I wish I could be with you whenever I wanted” Zhang He said while closing his eyes. Zhao Yun was silent and thought for a while. “maybe there is” he suddenly said. “what?!” Zhang He lifted his head and looked at Zhao Yun. “what do you mean, Yunnie?” he asked surprised yet hopeful that his lover knew a way that they could be together. “we could quit the army and live peacefully together somewhere” Zhao Yun said hesitating. “we talked about this last time and we agreed that we couldn’t quit and act like there was no war going on” Zhang He replied a bit disappoint. “yes you’re right but…” “shh, Yunnie listen”. “Lord Zhao Yun where are you?” a voice in the distant said. “there looking for you” “I better get going before they see us together”. “when will I see you again?” Zhang He asked his beloved quickly. “tomorrow same time, same place”. Zhao Yun gave Zhang He a kiss and left. Zhao Yun told Guan Xing, who was looking for him, that he went on a nightly stroll. Zhang He returned to his camp and nobody ever noticed he was gone. At least that’s what Zhang He thought. Cao Zhen and Yu Jin saw him leave, Cao Zhen didn’t really think about it but Yu Jin was suspicious. Zhao Yun and Zhang He met each other every night and never got into trouble. But Yu Jin began to think that Zhang He was providing information about their army to Shu and went to ask Cao Zhen what he thought about the matter. “Yu Jin I don’t think that lord Zhang He would do such a thing” Cao Zhen said when Yu Jin asked his opinion. “but surely you’ve noticed that his gone every night for the past 5 days” “yes but maybe his just going for a walk” Cao Zhen said believing Zhang He would never betray Wei. “I can accept that for the first 3 days, but the last 2 days he returned at sunrise and I don’t think a walk takes an entire night”. “yes but you still have no prove, so what do you plan on doing without any prove?” Cao Zhen said still not convinced. “well I’m sure he’ll go on his ‘walk’ again tonight and then we’ll follow him”. “what do you mean ‘we’ ?”. “If you’re so sure he’s not a traitor then you mustn’t have any objection in coming along and proving it, right?”. Cao Zhen didn’t know what say against this and agreed in following Zhang He.

That night…

“He’s leaving come on this is our chance” Yu Jin whispered. Zhang He had no idea that he was followed and walked to the meeting just like every night. When Zhang He arrived Zhao Yun wasn’t there yet so he waited. “see there’s nobody else here he’s all alone” Cao Zhen said to Yu Jin. “oh yeah then who’s that?” Yu Jin said pointing to Zhao Yun who was walking in Zhang He’s direction. “but that’s Zhao Zilong” Cao Zhen didn’t believe his eyes. “indeed Zhao Zilong from Shu, our enemy so now do you believe me?”. Cao Zhen didn’t know what to think of it and was silent until he saw Zhang He and Zhao Yun kiss each other. “Oh my god Yu Jin look!”. “so Cao Zhen is this prove enough for you?” Yu Jin asked his colleague. “You still don’t know for sure that he’s betraying us what if they just love each other”. “I highly doubt that and the next thing tomorrow I will send a messenger to inform our lord about this” Yu Jin said while getting up to leave. “where are you going?” Cao Zhen asked. “back to camp of course I’ve seen enough” with those words Yu Jin walked away followed by Cao Zhen who didn’t see any reason to stay. The next day Zhang He again returned at sunrise. Yu Jin had already send his messenger and didn’t listen to Cao Zhen who was still defending Zhang He. Cao Pi, the ruler of Wei, was furious when he got the news and he ordered Zhang He to be banished or worse. When Cao Zhen heard about Zhang He’s punishment he decided to warn him. So that night he followed Zhang He again this time without Yu Jin. ‘I better not yell his name cause else Zhao Yun will probably leave’ Cao Zhen thought when they arrived at the place. Cao Zhen carefully approached them. “did you hear something?” Zhao Yun asked Zhang He. “no nothing, why?”. “oh must be my imagination”. “actually it was me that you heard” Cao Zhen said revealing himself to them. “what?! Euh Cao Zhen I euh… don’t know what to say”. “don’t worry Zhang He I’m here to warn you”. “warn me? For what?” Zhang He asked confused. “well, a few days ago me and Yu Jin followed you here and saw you with Zhao Yun” Cao Zhen took a breath and continued “so now Yu Jin thinks that you’re giving information about our army to Shu but I know that you wouldn’t do such a thing” he paused again to take a breath and continued “today Niu Jin told me that he heard Cao Ren say that our lord plans on banishing you or worse and I thought it was unfair since they have no prove so that’s why I came to warn you”. “so why do you think were here?” Zhao Yun asked Cao Zhen. “I think you two just love each other”. “I’m glad you have so much trust in me but what can I do now?” Zhang He asked. “I never thought I would say this but cant you.. you know go to Shu?” Cao Zhen said hesitating. “do you think that Shu will accept me and our love?” Zhang He asked Zhao Yun. Zhao Yun thought for a while he knew that he could convince them to hire Zhang He, but accept there love…? Then suddenly he remembered something.

**flashback**
“ lord Liu Bei, Zhuge Liang and Jiang Wei are here to see you”. “let them in, Zhao Yun would you leave us alone will finish our game of Go later”. “of course my lord” Zhao Yun said while leaving the room. ‘I do wonder why he wanted to talk to them alone I mostly am allowed to stay when they talk about political stuff’. He then noticed that the door wasn’t completely shut. ‘I really shouldn’t but I am so curious’ Zhao Yun could resist and eavesdropped the conversation. “so Zhuge Liang you and Jiang Wei wanted to talk about something personal”. ‘that must be why I had to leave’ Zhao Yun thought. “yes we have something to tell you that according to the war law would strip us from our military positions”. “I see, you’re in love with Jiang Wei, aren’t you?” Liu Bei said extremely calm. “yes, how did you know?”. “just the way you act around each other kind of reveals that Jiang Wei is more than your apprentice” Liu Bei replied. “so what are you going to do to us?” Jiang Wei asked Liu Bei. “nothing I’ve got no problem what so ever with your love”. Jiang Wei and Zhuge Liang bowed and thanked their lord for being so understanding. ‘wauw Boyue and Kong Ming… huh there leaving better hide before they see me’
**end of flashback**

‘If Liu Bei accepts Jiang Wei and Zhuge Liang’s love then there is a chance that he will accept my love for Zhang He’ Zhao Yun thought happily. “Zhang He I think that at least Liu Bei will accept our love”. “are you sure?” Zhang He asked. “almost a 100%”. “well I’m really happy for you but I better get back before they start accusing me of betrayal too” Cao Zhen said. “yes you’re right, Yunnie I can’t come with you now so I’ll be at your camp tomorrow”. “okay but be careful” Zhao Yun said with a concerned voice. “don’t worry I will” Zhang He said. Cao Zhen returned and was lucky that nobody saw him. Zhang He stayed away the entire night like always so that the rest didn’t knew that he knew he was going to be punished. The next morning Yu Jin went to Zhang He’s tent. “Yu Jin what are you doing here?” Zhang He asked acting like he didn’t knew what was going on. “Zhang He I have permission from our lord to sentence you to dead”. “sentence me to dead? For what?” Zhang He said panicking a little bit. “we know that you have been informing the Shu forces about our battle plan”. “do you have any prove?”. “prove? Well we followed you a few nights ago and saw you together with Zhao Yun” Yu Jin answered getting a bit annoyed by all those questions. “I hardly call that prove” Zhang He said calming down again. “our lord said that you probably wouldn’t confess and since we don’t have any real prove you will not be sentenced to dead” Yu Jin said trying to hide that he was annoyed. “so what are you going to then if its not killing me”. “you’re banished if you ever show your face here again be sure that we will kill you” Yu Jin said while leaving the tent. “oh and before I forget if you’re not gone by tomorrow you’re dead too” he added mumbling. ‘that went quite well’ Zhang He thought getting his stuff and preparing to leave. He noticed that a lot of officers were looking at him with disgust when he mounted his horse and rode of to Shu. Only a few wished him good luck. “now all I can do is hope that Yunnie can convince them to take me in” Zhang He said to himself.

A hour of riding later…

“there it is, the Shu camp, well here goes nothing” Zhang He said. He took a deep breath and rode towards the guards. “eh? Hey look up on the hill” one guard said to the other. “looks like he’s all alone” the other replied. “who goes there?” one of them yelled at Zhang He. “I am Zhang He of Wei”. “Zha.. Zhang He?!”. The guards took a step backwards and readied there spears for battle. Zhang He saw that it wasn’t very smart of him to announce himself like that. “Calm down I didn’t came here to fight, I just want to talk to the officer in-command” Zhang He said trying to calm the guards down. One of the guards went to tell Zhao Yun, who was relieved to hear that Zhang He got out of the Wei camp safely. “Bring him here” Zhao Yun said to the guard. The guard returned with Zhang He and then went back to his post. “I’m glad you made it but I’m afraid that now the tough part begins” Zhao Yun said when they were finally alone. “yes but I do hope that Cao Zhen doesn’t get into trouble”. “I’m sure he’ll be fine” Zhao Yun said to comfort Zhang’s mind. Then a messenger stormed in with news from the main army. “I’m sorry I didn’t know you had company but I have an important message from Jiang Wei”. “what does our strategist want?” Zhao Yun asked the messenger. “we’ve won and the Wei army is retreating so he orders a retreat”. “a retreat? Why not pursue and finish Wei off”. “he suspects a ruse and our forces are to tired for another battle”. “I see, tell him that I got his order and also tell him Zhang He has defected to us”. The messenger nodded and exited the tent. The Shu army returned home without facing any difficulties. Zhao Yun immediately went to Liu Bei with Zhang He. “so Zhang He why did you surrender?” Liu Bei asked him. “they think that I provided your army with information and banished me”. “is that the only reason?” Liu Bei asked seeing that Zhang He was hiding something. Zhang He looked at Zhao Yun, who nodded. “no” he said turning to Liu Bei again. “I.. we.. euh lo..” Zhang He tried to say it but just couldn’t get the words out. “we love each other” Zhao Yun said to relief his lover. Liu Bei was silent for a moment. “you said that with such confidence even though you know the rules of war” Liu Bei said. “I trust on your understanding nature and I know you would never make the wrong decision” Zhao Yun said to flatter his lord a bit. Liu Bei laughed. “nicely said but doubt that you mean every word, nevertheless I don’t have the right to stand in the way of love, yours or that of anybody else”. “but Zhang He you do know that Wei is still Shu’s number one enemy, so that means you’ll have to fight your old comrades”. Zhang He looked at the ground. “I realize that” he said forcing a smile on his face. “good, then every things settled, Zhang He welcome to Shu”. Zhang He and Zhao Yun bowed and exited the room. It was already dark and when Zhao Yun brought Zhang’s stuff away, Zhang He went to a balcony to watch the stars. ‘ I’m finally together with Zhao Yun and Shu doesn’t look so bad either yet I do miss Wei a little’. “are you sure that you’ll be able to battle your old comrades?” Zhao Yun asked when he joined Zhang He on the balcony. “yes well except for a few like Cao Zhen”. “yeah we owe him big time if it wasn’t for him we wouldn’t be standing here”. Zhang He hugged Zhao Yun. “I still wonder what it was that brought us together on that side path” Zhang He said looking at the full moon. “some thing’s are just meant to be”. It was a beautiful night, the sky was clear and you could see the twinkling stars and bright full moon. it was without a doubt a perfect night especially for those two lovers who stood there in the moonlight looking towards there future knowing that whatever it brought they could pull through it as long as they were together.
