For all GBA and DS owners, go and get this and other AWs in series >_>. I haven't got DS, so I don't know how good game Dual Strike is (but I heard it's best in the series). However, AW2: Black Hole Rising has to one of the best games for GBA. The game is quite long and challenging as well. So those who don't know the series, Advance Wars is a tactical RPG where you try to destroy your opponent by hiring different units, such as tanks, battleships, bombers, A-airs, mechs and many many other vehicles.

The good guys in Advance Wars include 4 countries: Orange Star, Blue Moon, Yellow Comet and Green Earth. A country called Black Hole is the villain in series. The story is simple in AW2: Black Hole has returned to the Macro Land (the name of the world in AW) and they want to conquer all countries. In Campaign (Story) mode, you start out as Orange Star, where the Black Hole CO (character) named Flak has attacked and has almost conquered the whole country. Your first priority is to get rid of him and Black Hole army of course and to do this, special forces of Orange Star are called for aid. The stages of Orange Star are quite easy, because you are introduced to the basics of the game and Nell (leader of Orange Star) guides you during battles. After beating the Orange Star Campaign, you are on your own and you get to play as Blue Moon and Yellow Comet. Complete another one of them and you can play as the last country, Green Earth.

Now that I have introduced you to the countries and story, I'll tell you a little about COs. So, there are in total 19 COs as playable (you can't play with all of them in Campaign mode though), each of them having unique skills and powers. Each CO also has 2 super powers to use, POWER and SUPER. To use them, you need to fill your CO power meter enought, which happens when you destroy enemy units or they destroy yours. When your small stars are at max, you can use Power skill, but if you don't use it and fill your power meter more until the big stars are at max, you can use CO's Super skill (which is of course much better). The CO skill only lasts one turn and your meter is reseted back to zero after using it. But enought of that >_>. The COs are as followed:

Orange Star
Name: Andy
Description: A young engineer who can fix anything.
Good: Works well with all units.
Weak: No special advantages with any unit.

Name: Sami
Description: A lady who is expert with footsoldiers and can capture provisions quickly.
Good: Can capture provisions quickly and her infantry and mech units can move farther than with other COs.
Weak: Not good with vehicle units.

Name: Max
Description: The strongest of all three who is able to crush almost anything with his tanks.
Good: Strong with vehicle units.
Weak: Indirect units have lower range than other COs and have weaker attack power overall.

Extra COs: Nell and Hachi*

Blue Moon
Name: Olaf
Description: A man who is used to cold weather. Always arguing with his good friend Grit.
Good: Has advantage in snow.
Weak: Has disadvantage when it rains.

Name: Grit
Description: The sharpshooter of Blue Moon who never misses his target. Good friend of Olaf.
Good: His indirect units are strong and have better range than other COs have.
Weak: Not great with direct combat units.

Name: Colin
Description: A newcomer in Blue Moon Army. Has a great respect towards Olaf and Grit.
Good: Can hire units with lower price than other COs can.
Weak: His units are weaker because of cheap prices.

Yellow Comet
Name: Kanbei
Description: The Emperor of Yellow Comet. Loves his people and daughter, Sonja.
Good: All of his units are really strong.
Weak: Strong units come with high price.

Name: Sensei
Description: An old man, who still hasn't give up on fightning. Said to be unbeatable during his younger days.
Good: His helicopter, mech and infantry units are strong and move farther than with other COs.
Weak: Not strong against naval and vehicle units

Name: Sonja
Description: The daughter of Kanbei. Always plans things carefully before making a move.
Good: Has good vision in Fog of War and doesn't get ambushed easily. Hides HP from enemies and has strong counter-attacks.
Weak: Her attack power can suddenly decrease and is weak without Fog of War.

*Sigh*. It's late. I'll finish this tomorrow . If someone is not in mood to read all of my post, check the official site:

Yeah, I rather like this series, though I'm not that great at it. ;) I played Advance Wars up to the last level and got stuck and only made it a few missions past the start of the Green Earth missions for Advance Wars 2. I spend most of the time in the level creation mode. Someday I'll probably get a DS, and when I do I'll certainly be getting Dual Strike. I just wish the DS wasn't still so expensive. <_<

^ Nothing to do with topic >_>.

I'm playing AW2 on Hard now. Some stages are really hard, but you can still complete them with S or A ranks though. Anyways, you should get 2nd TinyCaterpillar. The game is only hard at the beginning, but after you have completed the Campaign mode once, you should be pretty good at it already ;).

Aw...nobody said anything of Black Hole's officers...The three I can recall:

[swipes LoW's format]

Lash:
Description: A disturbing little girl, in charge of an army. My favorite due to the powers which fit my preferred strategy.

Advantages: No advantages normally, IIRC. Her powers enhance terrain defense bonuses of her units and her super power adds the bonus to firepower.

Disadvantages: No disadvantages.

Hawke:
Description: Black Hole's top general, a cold and calculating officer.

Advantages: None. Regular power deals 1 damage to enemies/heals his units by 1, while super power has double effects.

Disadvantages: Powers take longer to charge up than normal.

Sturm:
Description: The big bad guy.

Advantages: IIRC, only his super power...which deals 8 damage to several units and gives his own an advantage(I forget which...).

...I forget the name of the serpentine dude with the quick-charging powers...

Lash has weaks points too, but I can't remember what they were. Probably with vehicles or something >_>. But you forgot:

Flak
Desription: Strong and tough looking man. Doesn't think and only relies to power.
Advantages: Is quite powerful with vehicle units.
Disadvanatge: Units have weak defense.

Adder
Description: An arrogant and selfish person, who only thinks himself.
Advanatges: Units are fast as hell >_>.
Disadvantages: Takes long time to fill CO meter.

I really hate Hawke. Just when you think you're doing fine, that idiot unleashes his "Blackwave" attack and destroys almost all of your units.

...I don't recall Lash having any weakpoints. Funky.

Heheh, I *ALWAYS* forget about Flak!

Adder...his power charged up fast and just allowed his units to move one space extra, but every use of it made it take longer to charge up. Also, his super power was just his normal power doubled.

I have this game.

I got a little bit in and then got bored. It's good if you wish to kill time but I didn't find it extraordinarly fun due to the game's repetitive nature.

But she has, because Sturm is the only CO without any flaws. Maybe Hawke too, but I'd remember it takes some time to fill his CO meter to max power.

Tiny, I finished the last stage in AW. It was so much harder than the last stage in AW2 (finished the stage with rank C :P). My characters were Andy, Grit and Sami. The stage requires some planning, but you shouldn't stay as defensive because you're going to regret it eventually. I'll tell you how to get started in it (my strategy when playing as Andy, Grit and Sami:

1. Andy should try to capture the airport located north of him and then hold his position. Grit should send all of his units from south to reinforce Andy. Buy few Infantries for him and send them to north to capture 4 cities, base and airport. With Sami, use the "Mech Assault" tactic, meaning you just keep buying Mech units for her and send them to reinforce Andy as well. Move her infantries and other units to north.

2. Units that you should recruit with COs:

Andy: MD. Tanks and A-Airs to stop infantries, tanks, helicopters and bombers
Grit: Artilleries, Missilers and Rockets to give cover fire for Andy.
Sami: Mechs only.

3. DO NOT position your units next to each other when Sturm can use his CO power. His Meteor Strike has a range of 5x5 squares and takes 8 HP from all enemy units where it hits. If your units are next to each other and you can't move them anymore, there's still a way to avoid his attack. By the time Sturm gets to use his CO power, you should have plenty of Mech units with Sami. Put them all into same mob and Sturm might attack to them instead. You can quickly buy more Mechs and Join the wounded ones.

4. Between the days 10 - 15 Sturm should be getting pushed back. Now just keep spawning units with your COs and you should eventually get the advantage. I was able to finish the stage in 36 days >_>.

Sami's Mechs are probably the most useful here because when you have about 10 or 20 of them, enemies are going to have hard time with them and you can take them out with your direct and indirect units.

I think Max and Colin were some of my favorites. I didn't really like anybody from the yellow faction, though maybe that was just because their missions were damn hard.

Well, Max is my favourite from Orange Star and Colin from Blue Moon.

Kanbei is actually pretty good CO of Yellow Comet. His troops are expensive, but they sure are great. Build Neotank and place it in city or base. Almost no one can get through him then.

Okay, thank you very much for the advice, LoW. :D I'll try it out when I can.

As for Advance Wars 2, I have it and played up until I believe it was the Blue Moon level where you attack the lab to get the Neotank blueprints. I absolutely could not do that one. I later tried it with a ROM so that I could use save states,(yes cheating, I know) and managed to get past it only to get stuck a few levels later in Green Earth. Anyways, this is certainly a game that I want to get back to.(Have to finish Final Fantasy Tactics first, though.)

Well, wait till you play it on Hard . Factory battles (last battle for each country) are hard as hell and it's almost impossible to get better than C from them >_>.

Sami is good, because even if your mechs or infantries only have 5 HP, they can still capture properties in 3 turns. What do you mean with bots by the way >_>. Bombers are something that you definetly should use, especially when enemy doesn't have airport, you have huge advance.

My favourites from each country are:

Orange Star: Max, he is awesome with his direct units and his CO power makes him even stronger. He just sucks in stages where indirect units are important :(.

Blue Moon: Colin, this guy can get everything so quickly. You don't need to buy tanks or copters, just go straight for MD. Tanks, Neotanks and Bombers.

Yellow Comet: Kanbei, who is an opposite character of Colin. His units are expensive, but quality is excellent like I said above ;).

Green Earth: Eagle, I love bombers, copters and fighters and Eagle is specialized in them. His CO power is also useful, since it allows you to move all non-infantry units second time.

Black Hole: Haven't played with them much, but Hawke looks pretty good.

Thought I'd revive this topic since I've since gotten Dual Strike and there's now an upcoming fourth game in the series.

http://ds.gamespy.com/nintendo-ds/advance-...2/831217p1.html

They're scrapping all of the characters in this game unfortunately. I'm worried if its going to be any good...

As for Dual Strike, I love it. ^_^ Definitely my favorite in the series so far. I've actually gotten decent at the series now after playing this one for a while, and I've done the Campaign 5 times so far. Four of them being in Hard mode. :P The new COs are great, and I'm surprised at how many new units the game has and how well they blend in with the gameplay. My favorite new CO would probably be Sasha. Her regular power (lowers enemies power meter) is a lifesaver in some stages, and her strengths blend perfectly with Colin who was one of my favorites in AW2. Anyone with a DS needs to play this game if they like turn-based strategy games. Its kept me occupied for a few months now. Right now I'm trying to go through the campaign enough so I get all of the wallpapers. Only 4 more to go! ^_^

By the way LoW, I've beaten AW1 with your helpful tips. Thanks again, Mech flooding's become a very useful strategy for me.

DoR is goooood stuff. Yay for nerfed CO's, making you need to develop strats and tactics instead of abusing bonuses and specialmoves.
