I have played Kessen, Kessen II, Dynasty Tactics, Dynasty Tactics 2 and a bit of Kessen3. Well i think all these games are great but i prefer the Kessen series cuz they are more realistic and real time based. Dynasty Tactics reminds a bit of a chess game lol :) From the Kessen series i liked nr 1 the most. Kessen 1 is the most strategic one without the magic stuff and more action based Kessen 3. Kessen 1 is also much more difficult than the other 2 titles since there is no magic and general charge killer moves.

Well thats all i have to say about kessen for now but i still got one question for you people :) Does someone know where i can find the Kessen 1 OST ? I really find it awesome but couldnt find it in shops nor P2P since the launch lol. Well but i am sure it exists ! So if someone could help me i would be very grateful.

Ninja are some of the most powerful units in Kessen III. It's just hard finding good generals adept at leading them (Takigawa Kazumasu!) so you have to train generals in leading ninja.

I say Kessen II. I loved the whole "Love story" between the young Liu Bei fighting Cao Cao for control Diao Chan. Quite interesting. Totally un-historical though. Great cinema movies too!

I voted for all 3, Kessen I is good because you get to position your units.

2 is good because of the strategies etc that you can choose from.

3 is good because of the great cinematics, I prefer the 1 and 2 gameplay though.

Kessen III is by far the best in the series IMO, more missions, more depth and a better presented story which is fairly accurate.

The strategy element of Kessen II was nice but the fictional nature of the game turned me off it.

Kessen I has nice FMV's and a alternate way to look at the SW story, but beyond that it offers very little.

I like DT2 the best of them all. Something made me giddy about Cheng Pu in the Wei army, Sima Yi in the Shu, Ma Chao with Lu Bu. Dream teams galore. Kessen 3, IMO, lacks SO MUCH of what I loved from Kessen 2. The scheming, awesome magic, colorful characters..all seem to fade away with 3. Plus I find it far too difficult.

Fair point Ryan, while I loved Kessen III I'll admit it did take me a while to take a liking to it. I even considering taking the game back at one stage as the mechanics of battle changed considerably to Kessen II. The big magics weren't so powerful anymore, and the strategy element was diminished into more of an action style. I guess they wanted to try add some Dynasty/Samurai Warriors style to it (just look at Rampage).

But in the end, I like them both for their different styles - just don't expect a Kessen I > Kessen II jump when playing the third or you'll be disappointed.

I always equip all my units with firearms, I hated Kessen II, the only reason I liked it was because of the gameplay. Kessen I was awesome, though it could've been longer.

Wouldn't liking a game because of gameplay be...a very good reason to like a game?

Yes it is, and I liked Kessen II for the same reason. I also thought the characters were pretty cool, even if Liu Bei's plot totally stunk (Diao Chan FTFL!).

Yeah, honestly it was the main plot of Kessen II that totally turned me off of it. If we had kept the colorful characters and at least made it so Cao/Liu were actually fighting over the land or something that wasn't so ridiculous I might have actually finished the game.

I liked Kessen 2, so many wacky characters and I absolutley love the battle flow mechanics, if a Kessen 4 was made then i would hope to have it simillar to Kessen 2, only better graphics, more abilities that sort of stuff!

Kessen 3 I got the game out as soon as it was released in NZ, I booked it for like a week and I didn't really like the new system, I actually died on the first stage lol (dont laugh, only I can lol :) ) but I came around to liking it, its actually how I became aware of Samurai Warriors through Oda Nobunaga!

But Kessen 2 rocks for me, i even went out of my way to find a copy at the beginning of the year then restarted and completly clocked it through expert with all abilities learned for all characters on both Cao Cao and Liu Bei's sides, what a pity that Li Li only learned three abilities lol :(

For improvements in a Kessen 4 I would want it back in the three kingdoms era, with the wacky cast from Kessen 2, add more though and the option to play as wu! Plus all characters MUST learn duel!! I so wanted to duel Dong Xuanfeng with Li Li and Xi Xuanfeng with Luo Luo! Also, magical dules would be cool like between Zhuge Liang and Sima Yi or Zhuge Liang and Himiko!

Wow, thats a long post lol :)

It's a fantastic post PoW, I had no idea you were in NZ, I'm nearby in Australia. ;)

Kessen 3 I got the game out as soon as it was released in NZ, I booked it for like a week and I didn't really like the new system, I actually died on the first stage lol (dont laugh, only I can lol  ) but I came around to liking it, its actually how I became aware of Samurai Warriors through Oda Nobunaga!

Sounds very similar to me actually, after playing Kessen 2 I become quite fond of the more typical RTS nature it had. I purchased Kessen 3 in a heartbeat upon release although awesome FMV's aside, I just felt something was terribly wrong, the move to action totally knocked me for 6 to the point of where I even returned the game! To just weeks later I ended up thinking...damn I shouldn't have taken it back. Fortunately shortly following that I found a copy, at 1/2 price! And what do you know it quickly become one of my favourite games of all time!

I played Kessen II first, while historically and story wise it was far from perfect, the RTS nature of the game was outstanding and extremely addictive. I remember the ability to siege castle gates, climb castle walls and the beautiful and epic magic’s and the simple yet fascinating dual system, they came with some awesome quotes! Zhang Fei taunting Xiahou Ba every time he fights him, Ba trying to avenge his father and Fei simply been arrogant when defeating him “Run away little boy!”.

Thereafter I played Kessen III, and from above didn't like it at all originally. Although in time it grew on me for it's amazing story and massive overhaul in the planning areas, the gold system and ability to purchase equipment, minor & major battles break-up was a massive improvement to the series, just at the expense of traditional RTS gameplay which can be off-putting. After this I purchased the Samurai Warriors series as I was told of Nobunaga's "Demon King" gimmick in the game which drove me insane to start with, but in time the SW series has too become a personal favourite.

Finally, after all of that I eventually found a 2nd hand copy of the original Kessen, by the time I got it unfortunately it really started to show signs of its age. The FMV's and story from Ieyasu's point of view is quite good, although in today’s standards the gameplay is woeful - I'm sure if I played it in its day I would rate it much higher. (This needs a remake Koei!!!)

Ha, long post by me too inspired by KoW! But no doubt for me I rate Kessen 3 the highest, with Kessen II not too far behind. The story is simply amazing, Nobunaga's aging from the fool who tried to unify the land, to one accepting to become a demon like any other lord to succeed, and his dream stage thereafter following the events of Honnoji. Damn I think everyone that likes the Sengoku era or simply a quality action/RTS game with decent story should play this!

I vote Kessen III because of the amazing FMV's and acting the game has. I've never seen Koei go into so much depth in their story and that is the only thing that Koei needed to make their game perfect. I'm still playing kessen III now on hard mode. The gamplay is cool because it takes a lot of strategy to get an S rank. I try to S rank every level to make the game more difficult. There is a lot to do in this game like minor battles, collecting all the cut scenes, and getting all the equipment. I'm trying to beat hard mode just so I can get the bonus chapter. Thankfully I have already beat all of Shigen's levels in my previous game because his army is tough with him as their leader. ;)
Those who do not value the greatness of the Kessen series shall be struck down with the blade of virtue!

Yeah the voiceovers, and more so the timing of them were terrible, half of the time they would repeat themselves, and the spellcasting sound effects drove me up the wall. That, and the messed up story in parts are the two biggest weaknesses the game has in my book.

Kessen 3 is by far the best imo, the story is great with a lot of well done cutscenes the gameplay is original and I love the RPG elements and character growth. Although I thought they over glorified Nobunaga a bit too much and made him out to be all Liu Bei-esque.

Kessen 2 was a bit of a let down for me the story was weak the characters were so weird it bordered on idiocy and wtf was up with no playable Wu side??

I never I played Kessen III but since I own Kessen II, it is an okay game. The gamplay and scenes are probably the only good thing about this game. Everything else is messed up. The characters and the voices don't match the lips when talking. Apparently Zhou Yu is a chick according to my game manual where it said "She is well...". Check page 11 in your manuals, people and tell me if that is what you see too. I accidently mistaken Ma Chao for a chick with rock hard abs and I pretty much hate Liu Bei in the game being this self centered arrogant jerk who only cares about Diao Chan. Go Guan Yu for knocking him out! \o/

I might pick up Kessen III sometime soon being as it is a great game from what people are saying.

I've passed all the Kessen games that have been released. They were all magnificent! Or I at least enjoyed them to an extent.

Kessen - I found it very fun, watching duels and the battles go through for the gameplay element. I played with both sides and enjoyed each, I didn't see any of the sides as villains or not. Great game, but I felt they could have done better with the endings. Both of them were the same, not much difference. I really haven't played in a while though, I think one of Tokugawa's generals died during his story, and that generals son succeeded him and his position. That was a sad moment when I played it.

Kessen II - Too fictional, not enough three kingdoms things IMO. But overall it was more of a gaiden, so then again, Koei doesn't make too much of these, which overall I found interesting during a point. After passing it with both sides in the aftermath, I found myself liking Cao Cao's story much better, As he had dreams and ambitions, unlike the other one. I didn't like Liu Bei's much, fighting hordes of Cao Cao's army just so Liu Bei can be satisfied with his fantasies. The gameplay overall was brilliant, I really liked the way you were using Tactics/Skills. Raid was my personal favorite, a lot like Dynasty Tactics, but with total control of the battle. Xun Yu a women, (You hear Xun Yu and you think foxy Lady? LOL!) Koei just wants to keep Cao Cao some company! Also, you can see Gan Ning when Zhao Yun is in at the tavern. (DW2) Anyone notice?

Kessen III - This one was my favorite, even though I'm all Three kingdoms around this one got my attention at most. During this story unfolds I couldn't help but becoming more and more interested with it. The Gameplay only lacks with the AI, sometimes they're not fast enough to keep pressing square! Haha, that's just me though. To be honest, it was more the videos that caught my attention than the gameplay. Anyway, I was hoping after you passed the game somehow you could play with Akechi Mitsuhide. But since this was pretty long, I have no complaints! Also, the music in this game is really amazing by far. I Used to hear it a lot when I was struggling with this game. Back with it's discussion, I thought it was a nice add when you could buy troops and armor, etc for war. I really like using it. And last, the ending well, I felt there was something there left to be desired...

Well, that's a how I felt with the series.

I've only played Kessen & Kessen II, so I voted between those 2.

Kessen - Wow, where do I start with this game? I found this in the discount bin at my local GameStop for 5 bucks. I thought "Well, 5 bucks. This game has to be worth at least 5 bucks." So I bought it and I was amazed. The cinematic value is amazing, whether it be during the battle cutscenes or through the movies. The graphics aren't as good as I'm used to, but it is understandable since this was a PS2 launch title. The graphics don't take away from the game either since they aren't horrible. This game is just plain fun. The armor for some of the characters is a little strange (Mitsunari has armor that would fit into the DW Gundam game.) but I like the majority of them, like Fukushima & Yukimura. I was very surprised that this game turned out to be amazing, as I didn't have great expectations going in.

Kessen II - I bought it at my other local GameStop for 8 bucks on the same day. Out of the 2, I expected this one to be better since I'm a bigger fan of the ROTK era than the Sengoku era. It's fun, but it doesn't have anything to hold me in. I haven't beaten it yet, but I can't bring myself to get back into it to beat it. The gameplay is fun, but it's not as fun as the original. Some of the costumes are awsome, like Zhao Yun's. But some of them are bad, like Ma Chao's. I like how it isn't a historical simulation, but rather a historical fiction. It's a fresh change to the set-in-stone ROTK era. So overall it's a fun game and I don't regret buying it. I hope I can bring myself to finish it.

Out of the 2, I find Kessen better. It's more fun and the gameplay sucks you in.

I can understand that post entirely Snowman.

While Kessen II has better gameplay it really lets itself down with such a comedic story, it's not something that sits too well with me either.

As for the first Kessen, I purchased it after the KII & KIII and while it's not great to play I agree the FMVs and story for a game of its age are actually really well done.

If you do happen to get a chance to buy Kessen III it would be well worth it, I think it has the best story, FMV & gameplay mix of them all. Although it is a little more action based, that's something you have to get used to for a Kessen game.
