I like Ranmaru's moves and I used to enjoy playing him, but now he makes me feel really, really, REALLY sick.

In SW1 I got confused because I thought he was a boy, but he wasn't pulling it off very well so I convinced myself it was a girl despite the name & referring to him as "HE" by other characters.

But yes. His moves I still really like but I had to use CAW to make someone with his weapon because I cannot stand his voice or even anything he says. I can't tolerate even having the words he says come up on the screen in silence!

Ranmaru is a boy... a feminine boy... yet he looks and sounds like a girl (seriously, the VA doesn't even TRY!). He's not hot, not sexy, not handsome... and the conversations he has with Nobunaga make me nauseous. So, so, so nauseous....

He and Nobunaga wasn't so bad. He and Mitsuhide was...blergh.

Historically, Nobunaga and him did have some form of relantionship...first few forms of homosexuality...

I've been using him a lot and I love his moveset. He's got some devestating attacks and he has my favorite R1+Square move: the death element strike (like Mitsuhide).
Miyamoto Musashi
Perk: Niten-Ichi (Musashi's attack is up permanently in any duels.)
Calm before the storm: Musashi may counter the next move his opponent makes and deals 2x the damage. 1/2 chance of working.
Wise one: Tactics used by Musashi have a much higher chance of succeeding.
Ganryu Slayer: When fighting other Wandering Ronin, Musashi may use this to increase his attack exponentially.

according to many ancient japan archives I've read Ranmaru was a homosexual, but i think he is actually a very good character for sure. His musou reminds me too much of Fu Xi's from Dynasty Warriors three though.

He was. It was common between a servant and his master. So, Nobunaga was too.

As was Alexander the Great.

I like playing Ranmaru. The only thing I have against him is his speed, but I suppose if you're carrying a sword like the one he has, you'd be slow too.

Not necessarly. Alexander the Great was a true homosexual. But the servant/master relationship generally wasn't totally because someone was gay. Preists in Japan would pray with shrine boys and then molest them as well. It was just common practice and it was an easy subsitute for real sex, usually not actual homosexuality. It was said that Cao Cao also had a "favored" servant boy.

Are you now talking about his sword or.... :o.

Ranmaru is still good character in SW2. They gave him slower S string but thank god they improved his Charge attacks and both of his Special attacks are useful (and that's extremely rare in SW2).

I think he was talking about something else entirely LoW*evil laughter*. Ranmaru may have actually improved in SW2, both as PC and CPU character.

Oooohhkaay. I don't have the artbook scan, okay. 88 inch nodachi, impossible. Really, carrying around a sword longer then he is, strange.

Well, Sephiroth did it too. Although Sephiroth has that whole "I'm an insanely powerful evil badass" thing going on. I like using him in Sugoroku. His catch phrases just crack me up

Yeah, that's not even practical anymore. Nothing bigger than about 5 feet could be used with any sort of proficiency or skill and nothing above 6 feet could be used practically I would assume. Beyond that, you're just swinging and hoping to kill.

But hey, Keiji has a blade bigger than him on his fourth weapon, so SW isn't going for realism. :P

I think it's nothing bigger than 3-4 feet. Anything beyond that, then forget it. It's pretty much swinging to maim. SW has some slightly unrealistic weapons, Keiji's 4th, Ranmaru's, Kanetsugu's and Yoshihiro's to name a few.

No, there was a guy who defended the Asakura retreat at Anegawa wielding a 5 foot nodachi on horseback (making it even harder).

As an opponent, he can be a tad annoying. That nodachi of his has pretty good reach, and his average speed is annoying enough if you're using a slower character like Shingen. But against a character with decent speed and a longer-range weapon, like Nagamasa, he's not all that hard to deal with.

As for looks, well... I suppose it's not all that surprising he's portrayed as being rather girlish in looks. Historically speaking he was Nobunaga's partner in shudo (think the Greek tendencies of older men taking boys for partners), so if he is portrayed as having feminine characteristics, it could be because of that.

Yes, I believe it's 100% cause of that. Unlike Zhang He, KOEI had reason to give him that look and manner.

Koei had a reason for Zhang He as well; to make him the "star of battle."

True but if they stuck with a generic type of attitude and appearance for everyone it would be boring.

I 100% agree. I love Zhang He, I can't picture him as soem bland nobody. I'm just saying Zhang He was chosen randomly to be that way, with ranmaru, at least there was SOME historical evidence.

I love Ranmaru. The fact that they slowed him down a bit in SW2 doesnt really bother me. And I actually prefer his SW2 voice as opposed to his SW1 voice.

I agree that it was historically accurate for Koei to give him feminine features and his Nodachi is by far one of my favorite weapons in the game. ^_^

btw: this is my first post.
