I know a lot of you are gonna probably come in here and give me grief for this thread, but I'm cosplaying Sun Ce at Otakon '07. Of course, I have a group of people I'm cosplaying with, including a Da Qiao, so there. :P

Is anybody else planning on doing some KOEI cosplay this year, or has already done it?

When I have some time, I'd like to work on some costumes from the games (I know they are not what they actually wore). But it sure is fun designing them. Now, although I have never done any DW stuff, we did do these two costumes which took 5 weeks to make. These have never been worn to animethon, but where made for halloween.....we get bugged every year to wear them, but it takes about 5 hours to get me ready. I don't have that kind of patience LOL
A better picture of the dress.

How long did your costume take? What was the most challenging piece to make?

Ooooh, that's nice.

I'm still working on the costume. So far, I've got all the fabric and some paper mache for the armor. I tried making the tonfas out of Crayola Model Magic, but they didn't turn out so good (they were sturdy but sloppy). The hardest part is probably the layers - Sun Ce has more layers than your average Dynasty Warriors character, plus you can't really tell what's a layer and what's one piece.

Real wood's out of the question. So what should I make the tonfas out of?

Paper towel rolls, the cardboard parts when they are finished. Maybe put a few inside eachother. And then use a toilet paper ones for the handle. Tuck 2 within eachother, for sturdiness, then use paper mache?

...You know, that's a great idea. I already thought of the cardboard tubes, but I never thought of coating them with paper mache.

I just thought it up real quick. You may need to cut a slit down one of them, then coat the inside of the non slit one in glue. You could repeat this process, and have other ones stuffed inside for thickness.

Real wood's out of the question. So what should I make the tonfas out of?

Or you could simply buy a pair of them in those stores that sell martial art weapons...I have seen them sold, but you would expect them to be made out of wood, of smaller size, thinner and shorter than the ones Sun Ce used - they are about a little bit over a forearm's length and an inch in diameter(so, really thin, like a steel bar), but the good thing is, it spares your time from having to make your own. :)

Omg! I just discovered that Guan Yu is in the latest volumes of the Planet Blood Manga series! Ppl, go check it out now! Okay...either the character is Guan Yu or a rip-off of Guan Yu...but he resembles him too much to Not be Guan Yu!

if i remember correctly you can't use "real weapons" for cosplay lol... it's a rule at most conventions.

Yeah. I already own a pair of wooden tonfas, but they don't look like Sun Ce's. They can't be used in cosplay. Some cons even frown on anything remotely sharp, whether it could realistically be used as a weapon or not.

I working on a Date Masamune, it is very hard. I thought the tiger outfit would be easy but I can't find white tiger fabric. I do however have the pistols for the new SW2 outfit.. but that costume looks even harder! I guess just look for the half-ass done eyepatch girl costume at Otakon 07.

But a pair of wooden tonfas can hardly be considered as 'sharp'...they could hardly appear as threatening unless the holder knows how to use it. But rules are meant to be followed for a reason, and in this case, for security issues. Oh well... ^_^

Thanks Insp and Bofubutt.
Cardboard tubes and paper mache are a great idea for the tonfas. I used a two litre pop bottle and paper mache for Aurons jug. I've had the most luck using paper and white glue, but it's not very smooth. I suppose if you soaked the paper for a long time and tore it very fine.

Haha, not a lot. Most of my cosplays have been very simple. I did cosplay Sun Ce in the past, and people recognized it, but the costume was very crude and made for under $20.

My other cosplays all involve normal clothing.

Some progress.

I'm working on making the tonfas (made out of PVC - you can't use real weapons at cons, plus, nobody makes bamboo tonfas like Sun Ce's anyway) look like bamboo. It's neater than the picture shows - some plumber's putty. All in all, the whole set cost me less than $12 to make, but now I have to paint and seal, which might set me back another $10.

The cosplays in this thread are awesome, and it's even better that you make the clothing yourself.

Me? I could never bring myself to cosplay a character :P
