Samanosuke in Kessen III; Onimusha reverse reference?

In Kessen III, Akechi Hidemitsu is called with his other name, Akechi Hidemitsu Samanosuke. I think this is a way for Koei to spit on Capcom's Onimusha series (esp. Onimusha 3), especially on the potrayal of Nobunaga.

Onimusha Nobunaga: Total bastard who is bent only on conquering the world, making people suffer, etc. A THREAT TO HUMANITY!!!

Kessen III Nobunaga: Pragmatic, virtuous ruler, who only wants to unify Japan and make it strong. No more, no less! He's just doing what he can.

Onimusha Samanosuke: 'Destined hero to save humanity', MUST KILL THE SOURCE OF EVIL, NOBUNAGA!

Kessen III Samanosuke: Mere minor officer of the opposing force, but does have exceptional skill, enough to be commended by Nobunaga before the latter killed him.

Do you think the potrayal of Nobunaga and Samanosuke in Kessen III is actually a reverse-reference to Onimusha, where in Onimusha, Samanosuke is a hero, granted with mystical attributes, who needs to save humanity from a 'demon' called Nobunaga, while in Kessen III, Nobunaga is a Warlord doing what he can to unify the land, and Samanosuke is just a minor officer on the opposing side, and dies like a soldier in battlefield?

It's most certainly possible, but I don't think there's enough evidence to say one way or the other. The only way to really know would be to ask the people since there are no actual references to Onimusha in Kessen 3 other than the name which is technically his real name, so doesn't exactly count. Interesting theory, though.
Miyamoto Musashi
Perk: Niten-Ichi (Musashi's attack is up permanently in any duels.)
Calm before the storm: Musashi may counter the next move his opponent makes and deals 2x the damage. 1/2 chance of working.
Wise one: Tactics used by Musashi have a much higher chance of succeeding.
Ganryu Slayer: When fighting other Wandering Ronin, Musashi may use this to increase his attack exponentially.

I've heard of the similar theory too but instead of a way to insult Capcom, I heard that it was in a way a tribute or friendly reference to the Onimusha series. I could be terribly wrong however.

I also think it's a tribute since they use to be early rivals with the ROTK/DOE series but since Capcom put DOE to a close id say its a tribute since in a way Koei revived Dynasty Wars (which was a side scrolling Hack and Slash game for the Arcade based on ROTK,kinda a pre early beta of Dynasty Warriors but made by Capcom instead) There are a lot of references of that game in Koei's DW series!
In this world of chaos my intelligence on the battlefield would be used like a gamer with there consoles. ~Jeremy H~

I think it's a friendly tribute. KOEI does this out of love for the history, I doubt they'd insult anyone else who shared that passion. Then again, I could be wrong, and they could be blood hungry A-holes.

I think it's a tribute as well. Look at another example: Sengoku BASARA series with those over-the-top character designs, and KOEI's answer? Kotarou. Purple skin, stretching gauntlets, you name it.

I only said 'reverse reference'. Why is everybody interpreting it as 'insult'?

I would say it's a partial reverse. Samanosuke is skilled as a warrior, enough to warrant Nobunaga's respect. The Nobunaga being good, Mitsuhide being evil thing is a reverse of how the two are generally portrayed.
