Here are the different troops you can buy in the game. Each have their advantages and disadvantages. Ashigaru are the most basic unit. Ashigaru: The most basic of unit types. They fare okay in most conditions, and do not exceed anywhere, but their spears can help hinder a cavalry charge. They are only able to wield yari (spears) or yumi (bows). Average running speed. A bit slow moving through mountains. 100 for 100 gold. Archers: Long-range specialists. Compared to ashigaru or samurai armed with bows, they are superior in all factors, but fail in close-range combat. Keep them safe with melee units! Rather fast, outrunning most other units besides yakuza, shinobi and cavalry. A bit slow moving through forests. 100 for 100 gold. Marines: As their name implies, these sailors and pirates are very good at water ventures. They can fight effectively in battles in or around rivers and are perfect for ship-to-ship fights. However, they tend to falter on elevated terrain (*cough*most of Japan*cough*), so they are best deployed in naval battles. Weapon-wise, they are able to wield katanas for ship-to-ship battles, yari (spears) for field fights, and yumi (bows) for any occasion. Slower than ashigaru on the field, unless moving in water, where they are fastest. Marines can traverse all bodies of water safely. Very slow moving through mountains or forests. 100 for 150 gold. Teppou Ashigaru: Hard and a bit costly to come by because of the difficulty to obtain guns en masse, but fairly powerful. Teppou Ashigaru are essentially ashigaru equipped with and trained extensively with firearms. Their guns can stop a cavalry charge of samurai dead in its' tracks assuming conditions are good, but while reloading they are susceptible to attacks. There are a few disadvantages with gunmen however. 1.) They must be positioned at the front of an army to avoid friendly fire, and 2.) Their guns cannot work if it is raining. Average running speed. A bit slow moving through mountains. 100 for 200 gold. Yakuza: Lowly Samurai who no longer serve a lord and find other means to bring in a buck. Sympathetic towards the peasant class, they work well with Ashigaru but detest fighting along with Samurai. Since they wear no armor, their defense is rather low, but they have smart intuition and great group tactics. Though expensive and come in low numbers, Yakuza can bring in more koku and ashigaru/peasants to your cause. Very fast unit, ideal for quick tactical maneuvering. Yakuza can also traverse all bodies of water safely, and suffer no movement penalties on any terrain. The most mobile unit overall. 50 for 250 gold. Samurai: The elite fighting class of Japan. They are powerful warriors who can easily fight off a poorly trained army, even when terribly outnumbered. Samurai can either be mounted on horses or go on foot and wield yari (spears), katana, or naginata. Yari are meant for charges while katana are meant for close combat, while naginata are rather effective when fighting against cavalry. They can also utilize yumi (bows) for quick hit-and-run bow tactics when mounted. You cannot transport mounted Samurai on boats. Mounted Samurai are generally meant for large charges and rush attacks, while foot Samurai are for close-quarters, raids, scouting, and sieges. When mounted, Samurai are the fastest unit on the field. Otherwise they move the same speed as ashigaru. When moving through mountains while mounted, they suffer a huge penalty on movement. 100 for 250 gold. Shinobi: Trained martial artists who are able to use bows, guns, swords, spears, kamas (scythes) and various ninja weapons fluently. They are not terribly good fighters in open battles and are often easily dispatched by samurai, however in siege battles on either offense or defense, they fare better. In any battle, they are generally more proficient than other troops at using tactics. They are ideal for using explosives. Somewhat fast on the field. Shinobi can cross rivers and streams safely, but cannot move through lakes or the sea without boats. No other movement penalties. 100 for 300 gold. Sohei (Warrior monks): Basically the ultimate foot unit, warrior monks are extremely fanatical and especially well-trained soldiers who will be willing to fight for whatever cause you employ them for. They are versatile troops who can use guns, bows, naginata (a type of polearm with a curved blade) or masakiri (battleaxes). They can be interchanged as melee fighters, gunmen or bowmen in battle easily, and are superior to all other units except samurai. Be careful, Warrior Monks tend to falter against other Warrior Monks due to their mutual faith in Buddhism. A bit faster than ashigaru. No movement penalties. 100 for 300 gold. |

Asch, I suggest you double check your math.
Should be either 150 for 750 gold or 100 for 500 gold. Which is it that you wanted?
The numbers you posted add up to 4450. Either that or 4700 for the extra 50 yakuza. NOTE: I'm not trying to single anyone out. This goes for everyone, Asch's just didn't make sense at first glance so I checked for him. |
