Here is my Kessen III guide. This is all original stuff, with constant personal note taking while playing through the game - Yeah it's by far one of my favourite games/series ever!

This Kessen III guide contains the following:
1 - Version History & Initial Information.
2 - Missable Samurai Warriors Guide.
3 - Minor, Major and Decisive battles.
4 - Stat Building:
i) Level ups.
ii) Rampage.
5 - Troop Details, the good; and the bad.
6) End, Final Notes.

1) Version History & Other Information.

Version 1.0 – Guide created, 28th April 2006.
Version 2.0 – Various modifications and posted on KOEI Warriors, 20th August 2007.
Version 2.1 – Added other optional recruitments, 24th August 2007.
Version 2.2 – Added initial troop types for the Warriors and possible Oichi recruitment information, 13th October 2007.

This guide/FAQ is for personal use only. It may be referred to in helping you with the game, and also posted anywhere on KOEI Warriors to aide others with questions regarding to the game. This is a KOEI Warriors exclusive guide and therefore must not be published on any other website. Links to it are fine, but not copied or modified in any form whatsoever.

All trademarks and copyrights contained in this document are owned by their respective trademark and copyright holders.

Alright, boring stuff aside, the guide is next!

2) Missable Samurai Warriors Guide:

During the course of the game you will get new Warriors as part of the story, and some you can only get by reaching certain conditions.

There are a total of 24 different Samurai you can potentially recruit during the game that will not just enter your army via the story, while getting them all in one play-through is impossible, refer section #3. Then there are another 5 which are unlocked by satisfying other conditions, these will be listed first.

The first two are recruited by uploading either Samurai Warriors, or Samurai Warriors: Xtreme file data; if you have any of course. While these two additional characters have unique equipment they don’t contribute to the catalogue (rather then are added only if you upload the data) so it is possible to complete the catalogue even without them.

Warrior: Keiji Maeda
Initial Type: Mounted Spear
How: Upload a copy of your Samurai Warriors save data via the Select menu when available.

Warrior: Inahime
Initial Type: Bow
How: Upload a copy of your Samurai Warriors Xtreme save data via the Select menu when available.

Listed next are three additional officers which will be available from Chapter 2 onwards once you have obtained part of your catalogue. (I have no notes on what part exactly, anyone know?)

Warrior: Omatsu
Initial Type: Mattocks

Warrior: Rikyu Sen
Initial Type: Katana

Warrior: Kotaro Fuma
Initial Type: Ninja

Next is the list of the 24 other officers you can recruit based on your actions throughout playing the game. In fact, there is potentially 25 as I have later learned that Oichi apparently joins on Chapter 8 on Expert mode only, I haven’t finished Expert to confirm this for myself as yet however…

...End of the Missable Samurai Warriors guide; have fun getting more and more warriors to join your army!

3) Minor, Major & Decisive Battles.

Minor Battles: These are merely 'additional' non-compulsory fights, that give you the opportunity to rest Nobunaga Oda, gain experience for your 'weaker' Samurai, also a chance to gain additional items & Gold. You can do all the available minor battles in each chapter, providing you complete them before doing the Decisive Battle for the Chapter (Refer to Decisive Battle Exceptions below).

Major Battles: These are the missions that allow story progression, you cannot to do all of them in one play-through, so use the 'Major Battles per Chapter' list below to plan which battles you want to do in advance.

Decisive Battles: After finishing a certain number of Major Battles a Decisive Battle will emerge, this spells the end of Major Battles for that particular chapter. Of course there are some exceptions, refer below for them.
Chapter 1: Has just the two Decisive Battles.
Chapter 6: Starts and finishes with a Decisive Battle.
Chapter 9: Does not have a Decisive Battle.

Here’s a list of how many Major Battles you must do each Chapter; use this as a guide to elect the ones you want to do in each Chapter.

Major Battles per Chapter:
Chapter 1: None
Chapter 2: 3 of 3
Chapter 3: 1 of 2
Chapter 4: 2 of 3
Chapter 5: None
Chapter 6: 2 of 3
Chapter 7: 2 of 3
Chapter 8: 2 of 4
Chapter 9: 2 of 3
Chapter 10: None
Chapter 11: 3 of 3
Chapter 12: None
Chapter 13: None (Hard and Expert difficulty only)

4) Stat Building.

There are various ways to increase the stats (WAR, INT & STA) for your Samurai, they include your equipment, level ups and Rampage.

i) Level Ups: Are determined by your Samurai Class, refer to the list below to manipulate them to your advantage.

This will show the Samurai Class, followed by the WAR, INT, STA attribute increase they will receive per level up after completion of battles.

Note 1: You can also buy various Juzu's to change your Samurai class during the course of the game, do so regularly to either balance, or max your Samurai in whichever attribute you wish.

Note 2: Most of the classes have a total net gain of 9, while 'All' has 10 and 'Hero' has 12 - thereby making them better overall Classes.

Legend:
Code:

Class:   WAR - INT - STA = Total
*Hero:    4  -  4  -  4  =  12
All:      4  -  3  -  3  =  10
Warrior:  4  -  1  -  4  =  9
Ninja:    3  -  3  -  3  =  9
Sage:     3  -  4  -  2  =  9
Priest:   2  -  4  -  3  =  9

*How do you get the powerful Hero class?

You will require one of the two rare 'Bodhi Juzu's' from the game:
1) Gain an S rank in 'The Final Battle of Mikawa' - I'll warn you this is probably the toughest mission in the game, against the almighty Shingen Takeda's army just prior his death to illness.
2) Gain an A rank in 'Special Battle 1' - You can unlock this by gaining 100% completion in parts of the catalogue.

ii) Rampage - When in a rampage you can potentially not just alter your and the enemy officers condition, gain exp, gold, stun your enemy & defeat some of there troops - which is good enough as it is, but there is much more!

In a Rampage you fight solo in a 'Dynasty/Samurai Warriors style' battle, should you manage to defeat 100 soldiers before the time limit runs out or been defeated you will then engage with the enemy officer. Should you win this battle your Condition will raise by one, and the enemy officers will reduce by one, should you lose the items & soldiers you have defeated will be lost, and your condition will reduce by one - It's better to run the time out even before drawing the enemy officer out then losing!

Battle Skills, Offensive Skills etc: - When in a Rampage you may notice from time to time after the enemy officer appears a note showing one of 'War Cry up'/'Lightning Up' etc or one of ‘WAR/INT/STA’ up above their health bar.

What does this mean? It means if you survive the time limit and defeat the enemy officer that skill/attribute will increase.

How do you know if such bonus will occur? Before you enter a Rampage review the difference between your officer and the officer you will Rampage against. If any of there Skills or attributes is of a greater amount then yours/or they have one that you don't, one of these skills/attributes will then become the random bonus reward.

How much Increase will you get?

Skills Increase: This I have been unable to get exact, short answer the greater the difference, the more you will generally gain.

Attribute Increase: This I have managed to get to an exact value - it all depends again on the difference in the attribute.
Difference of 1 to 9 = Increase of 1 for that attribute.
Difference of 10 to 19 = Increase of 2 for that attribute.
Difference of 20+ = Increase of 5 for that attribute.

Using the above you can rather easily manipulate your attributes to be very powerful across the board, review the officers pre-battle and pre-determine which ones you will 'pick on' - Then alter your equipment to allow 2 of the other attributes to be very high, allowing just the one to be very low, try ensure that you will overpower with the other 2 and for the +5 bonus to get the most efficiency out of the attribute. Personally I'd say INT is the easiest to achieve and STA is the hardest.

5) Troop Details, the good; and the bad.

Here is a summary of the 9 different Troop Types, what their special move is and what their strengths/weaknesses are.

Mounted Spears – Cavalry Charge/Naginata Charge
Probably the best of all the available troop forms in the game, they are very fast and powerful.

Mounted Bows – Arrow Volley
Again fast, but poor offence and defence. They can provide over front line unit support.

Mounted Rifles – Rifle Volley
Same as Mounted Bows, except they shoot in a straight line, as opposed to over troops as bows do, which therefore makes it a better defensive unit then an offensive unit, Shooting over a charge will never happen, shooting straight through it however can cause massive headaches to ANY charging unit, while mounted bows are better suited behind an attacking unit to get some extra shots in, if you use your defensive ability well you can make good use of them.

Katana – Death Wheel
Excellent Defensive unit, best suited at fighting any non-long range unit, death wheel provides good offence in a very defensive measure, perfect way to deal with near any form of charge!

Spears – Spear Wall
Slow, but the best defensive unit available, Spear wall is the number one defensive strike, can even piece Cavalry/Naginata charges.

Bows - Arrow Volley
Are a little slower then its mounted variety, but much more powerful.

Rifles – Again, a little slower then the mounted variety, but with greater defence & offence.

Ninja – Shadow Strike/Shuriken
Most powerful overall unit in the game, in terms of normal attacks they will defeat anyone, not to mention the fastest troop Initial Type on foot. However their Troop Skills are poor, Shadow Strike in particular is a horrible manoeuvre, and Shuriken is ok in terms of defensive ability but nothing more. Overall excellent in close battle, but hopeless if you’re after Troop Skill bonuses post war.

Mattocks – Bombard
Worst unit in the game, don’t even bother, slow in speed and attack, takes forever to get a decent form on the Mattocks (Carpenter Mattocks) and they are the most expensive purchase in the game at 99,999 – Waste of time, have one for novelty and that’s it, then change whoever else is a Mattock to the nearest best thing, will be worth your while.

Summary - Mounted Units are terrible, with the exception of Mounted Spears, try avoid using mounted bows or rifles, they and terrible at defence, and will lose very quickly is not supported.

Most powerful Unit – Ninja, in basic combat they will almost always win.

Worst Unit – Mattocks, terrible, slow, and weak…why bother?

Most Balanced Unit – Mounted Spears, high speed, best close range troop skill which can take our thousands of troops while evading at the same time, to charge them again, also very fun to use!

Highest maintenance – Mattocks, Bows & Rifles in all forms, while they can be useful in some situations they have to have support leave them, left alone they will fall very quickly, you really have to keep your eye on where these guys are.

6) End, Final Notes.

That concludes my personal FAQ from countless plays (about 5-6 I guess) and constant note taking, Hope you find something useful. I am fully aware that there may be some errors in the above guide, if so please notify me of them in a orderly manner; rather then bash it and call me a loser or whatever. We all make mistakes sometimes after all.

Note that I have used the names of the warriors as they appear in Kessen III, I’m aware the game does not use names exact to history. (Example: Hattori Hanzô as opposed to Hanzo Hattori). This is just to make the guide as accurate as possible to the game Kessen III.

Thanks to the KOEI Warriors members whom have provided comments and feedback to aide me in making this guide as accurate as possible.

Finally thanks to KOEI for yet another great instalment of the brilliant Kessen series!

The opinions and information provided in this FAQ are of my own per my experiences with the game; of course not everyone will agree with the presentation and my views in this Guide.

- End of FAQ.

------------------------

Any comments are welcome, and I hope it can be of some use to you guys.

A VERY useful guide. Hell, I didn't even know Tachibana Ginchiyo, Yagyu Muneyoshi or Otani Yoshitsugu were in the game before now. Now I wish my PS2 still worked so I could go back and unlock them. :(

By the way, I personally like Mounted Bowmen for Inahime (as a support unit) but that's just me. Mounted gunmen...eh...not as much. Mattocks do indeed suck, which is why I recommend switching Niwa Nagahide to either another ranged unit or to ninjas to most people who complain about him. :ph43r:

I'm not even sure why Koei added mattocks to the game. They should have made them stronger or not bothered with them at all...

I'm requesting that this be stickied.

Edit-Nevermind, I did know Yoshitsugu was in the game, and I even unlocked him. In fact, I think I unlocked all the Sekigahara officers (Sakon, Yoshitsugu, Masanori, Kiyomasa, etc.). Hah, been awhile since I played, I guess.

A lot of characters who appeared in Kessen 1 still have the same model, Otani Yoshitsugu, Shimazu Yoshihiro, and Hosokawa Fujitaka still look the same.

I personally like Musashi, Shikanosuke and Goemon the best out of the unlockables. I know Shuma-Gorath prefers Kani Saizo over all of the rest, but I believe that Shikanosuke has more war stat potential (starts with very high war, etc.). Goemon and Musashi are just obviously good unlockables. Musashi has a very high war stat (and is difficult to unlock because of that: I actually only managed to get him once after several tries...), while Goemon has a transform ability that you can easily level up to make it very powerful...

Thanks for the comments, it took a while to write but I enjoyed the game that much I just have to tip it upsidedown and try find everything I could. ^_^

And oh god yeah Mattocks are a disaster unit, I simply cannot fathom how on earth they can have the most expensive unit (Carpenter Mattocks - 99,999) when they are a woeful unit. Someone might like them, but I certainly haven't found a reason as to why...

I never really took alot of interest in the character models of Kessen I (because I only played through it once), I might look into that myself out of curiosity. On character models I've noticed that some of the characters in Kessen III were no doubt a base for some of those in Samurai Warriors Xtreme (Just look at Imagawa Yoshimoto)

I said out of the unlockables, Shogun. All of the characters I mentioned were not main characters, but rather samurai you could UNLOCK as the game went on...

The problem with mattocks is that, they're ok at first (just ok, not good or great or anything), but as the game goes on, they stay as weak as they were at the beginning of the game. Their special move, unlike the special moves of bowmen and riflemen, only becomes slightly stronger. Instead of allowing them to fire off multiple rounds at higher levels, as Koei did with bowmen, mattocks just sling slightly more powerful bombs at foes. I never realized that mattocks' most powerful unit costs so much. Maybe it's secretly godly? Like the bombs they sling explode and cause splash damage around them? That would have made mattocks a lot better too...

Anyways, you're probably right about the character models being a basis for ones in Samurai Warriors, partly. Although I don't really remember what Sakon looked like in Kessen III, but I thought he was kind of generic.

Hey, if you PM Goldensummit or Inspector Chin, I'm sure they'd be willing to add your guide to the main site. You could also probably submit this to Gamefaqs if you wanted.

Yeah, in some cases officers will show after something has happened. I'm starting a replay of the game currently so I'll go through it myself to try make them more accurate if possible.

If you notice any other small details like that feel free to post them and I'll try add them in.

And thanks for comment and pinning it Insp. Chin. :)

Edit: I added the "other" five potential recruitments into the guide. Being the two for SW & SW:XL data and three others I have once I gained part of the completion...unfortunately I don't recall which part exactly unlocked them; does anyone know?

Yeah, Kani Saizo+spear unit=winwin, IMO. ^_^ GREAT guide, I learned things from it, and I've played this game so much. This new knowledge will help me kick even more ass. And yeah, mounted rifles/archers suck. The ground versions are much better, but still a bit awkawrd to use at times.
Death should be painless, shouldn't it!?

I still think Shikanosuke=better than Kani Saizo both in-game and historically. Shika starts with 330 something war or something crazy like that, and can also get his war stat increased very easily afterwards. Plus, he's way cooler than Kani Saizo historically. >_>

Samanosuke, Slick?

They key to victory with Mattocks: They do huge damage against buildings, cannons, and walls.

Katanas suck. Anything they can do, mounted spears/naginata or spears can do better. I end up making guys like Yagyu Muneyoshi be ninja generals instead.

A mounted unit and either an archer or rifle unit, or two rifle units together, are deadly combinations if you make sure to utilize the R1 call when it flashes blue.
These are the Forum Rules. They are there for you to read and abide by them, not to ignore them.

I never used Mattocks for Buildings etc, but that does help it's unit a little bit if your prepared to deploy them for that purpose only. I just rather time a run into a bow tower etc and destroy it even before I get hit, which then saves me wasting a deployment on a Mattocks unit for something more useful.

I also just added a minor note to Ujisata Gamo's recruitment, in a replay I tried to get Oichi back over the troop amount via healing as she got beat on a bit. It didn't work for the recruitment, so just don't let her get hit period if you can.

Alright guys, I've added a small patch to the guide.

1) Added initial troop types for the optional recruitments; which may aide in selecting which ones to go for. Of course you can change the troop types but the initial ones are of course the ones with the greatest of proficiency; and is a free troop of course.

2) Added notes on Oichi's possible recruitment, after Miss Fairy queries her recruitment I've done some research and it appears that she may appear during chapter 8 on Expert difficulty only. I hope to one day confirm this myself, time dependant of course.

It was a pleasure to publish it, this was originally the first game guide I wrote, there wasn't much on it, anywhere, not even GameFAQ's so I originally done my own in excel format. Then decided to publish it with [] tags for boards such as this. I considered putting it on GameFAQ's but their FAQ layouts and requirements are a pain in the neck, as is the ability to get feedback from the fans and those that use it, so this is KW exclusive. ^_^

I read about that somewhere, but I’m guessing that only applies to the Japanese version.

I certainly don't have a box set and managed to unlock those characters, I'm not sure exactly when, but upon a replay on a tougher difficulty and with come catalogue completion they were all available when I started chapter 2.

Oh, I guess that would probably be the logical idea. Though I only played through the game once, perhaps I'll go through it again with my faves Nobunaga and Musashi... Oh wait, do you start off with all the generals in the beggining when you play the extra game? I forget.

When you finish the game, if you carried over the save file to the additional difficulty you get some carry over equipment and skills, but not officers. You can always upload your SW & SWXL disks (if you have them) to get a couple extra officers early in the game though.

Yeah I do have those games. You can also see I have all of the SW and Kessen games too. Though this is probably my favorite Kessen yet. Yeah I got the extra officers, I particularly liked Ina moreso then Keiji though.

Cough

Forgive me, but I meant to ask.. erm how exactly is this game played?
I believe I had Kessen II, the one that involved RTK, but sadly, I do not know how to play it.

As for the tutorial, I don't even know what I pressed as, I merely did what is told.
O_O

Erm, any simple descriptions about this?
