A lot of Japanese games use simple English words like that. It's not a really big deal.

I'm not sure, but most Japanese people knows English. They're not fluent at it though, but they know a few words. Beside, I think it's mandatory for Japanese students to take English class.

Seriously, I LOL'd at this. Do you expect this game to be 100% Japanese, no alphabets at all? Dolby logos are supposed to be written in alphabet.

Those are the words that must included. Like if you visit any JP game sites, they'll have the sentence like "all rights reserved, start (title screen)" and some JP sites also have simple English, not only SB2, but look at Sengoku Musou Katana (JP site), they also featured some English words in.

all rights reserved, start (title screen)
off, mb, (saving)
presented by dolby digital..

These 3 are very often to be appeared on every game so it's not a big deal. And also "NEW" it's nothing wrong to be written in English.

Oh, so EVERYONE in japan knows a little bit of english? dang, i wish everyone here knew a bit of japanese or something. that would be sweet. Or we could all just invent one Language for the world, like in south park, where they merged every language into one. it sounded like: Glork glah blah glork. It would only take a few decades for everyone to adapt, nothing bad about that :P

that's the thing about English, it's weird

you go to anywhere, and on the bus they will have "bus" or "transport" along with their language

but over here (england) the most foreign language i saw was at bristol. and that was welsh <_<

Don't forget English is the international language so that's why. For those who don't know advanced English, they at least know the simple words, like "NEW!" and etc.

BTW I believe 30-40% of our forum members know a little Japanese or Chinese so yeah. If you want you can learn from the language class. If one day, Japanese is the international language, I'm sure all people know it as well, if not, then a little bit of it.

Just so that you know, Lord_Nagamasa, a lot of things in various anime and Japanese games are named from foreign language words, most commonly German. So don't think the Japanese are that confined... <_<

Over the years English has become one of the worlds largest learned languages, its not un-common for other cultures to know it.

You see, I was actually surprised to see that SB2 used more Japanese for the options and the menus than English. I also tend to joke by saying that I've never seen so much kanji than in SB.

Don't be surprised at the Japanese's common use of English. Following the Second World War this country has been greatly influenced by western culture, and in particular by the Americans. English is taught at all schools and therefore more Japanese people know at least a few and basic words.

Also, the number of immingrants and foreigners who live in Japan has vastly increased in the last two decades; nowadays it's possible to find announcements written in three languages at bus stops and train stations (Japanese, English and Portuguese I think). I've never been to Japan, but my parents and siblings have, and they tell me about all these "linguistic" changes of sorts going on in the country.

Besides, remember that Japanese seem to be, err, "fascinated" by anything and everything which is in English, therefore their use and abuse of the language (just take into consideration the Engrish we usually find in videogames and manga and anime). Do they usually use English words in their daily lives? Well, you might be surprised to find out that they write "toireeto" (in katakana, one of the three Japanese "alphabets") instead of "toilet" in the doors of their bathrooms/restrooms.

Thats interesting..

So if i went to chill in Japan for a vacation, i could just be like "what up" and someone would be like "Word" and we'd go chill somewhere, as opposed to if i went to Iran, id be like "what up" and i hear "GET OUT OF OUR COUNTRY AMERICAN!" then id be "Uh, im Canadian" then a "Bull$#!T, leave!"

Or something to that effect?

....Hmmm...not quite.

Basically, because the Japanese have had to learn English to a "working class" degree, it would mean more than likely that, as long as you stayed within the realm of what they know, you could probably get by.

But expecting to be able to go up to them, say "What up?", exchange some dap, and all that? Yeah, right.... :D

Oh, yes, you're right. They use "toire", the short form of their, err, Japanized "toireeto". I got things a bit confused out there because I was thinking of some relatives, who had a sign with the word "toireeto" (in katakana) hanging at the door of their bathroom. I guess they were trying to teach their children a bit of written Japanese with those signs they had all around their house...

Uh...
In spite of how fond the Japanese seem to be of all things American (particularly, the English language), many of them don't actually see foreigners talking in their languages in an overly friendly way. Maybe because of the many foreigners/immigrants that currently live in their country; in the case of my relatives (I'm Peruvian), they are more often than not looked upon with a bit of suspicion when they speak in Spanish, their mother tongue.

But I also think Japanese people tend to react this way because they feel a bit uneasy when treating with foreigners, especially if they don't talk their language very well. If you go to Japan I think, you might be able to communicate in English. But just don't speak too fast or "overwhelm" them with long or complicated sentences; if their usage of Engrish is any indicator, a great deal of the Japanese population speaks a little English... But just not too well.
