Does anyone know what was the cause of his death? I've tried searching but came up with nothing.

Yeah, Kanetsugu died on January 23, 1560 of illness at the age of 60.

Naoe Kanetsugu is very overrated. In almost ll ofhis actions, he helped in the Uesugi's fall. Kenshin's idea was of a joint government between Kagekatsu and Kagetora, and, as Kanetsugu knew that while Kagetora was alive his position would be menaced, he gave Kagekatsu a full impulse to rebel, and "unite" the Uesugi
Pre-Sekigahara: Not much to say. He just declared a state of War against the Most Influential and Powerful of the 5 regents, Matsudaira Motoyasu( Tokugawa Ieyasu)
In my opinion, Usami Sadamitsu is underrated and Kanetsugu is very overrated

Kanetsugu had nothing to do with Kagekatsu planning Otate. He had no beef with Kagetora either. They were in good terms. Kagekatsu planned the whole thing and Kanetsugu, as a childhood, friend, suported him.

Siding with the west was no dumb move. Kagekatsu was just motivated by his ggod relationship with Mitsie.

And why are you comparing him to Usami Sadamitsu, when you know damn well that they are from different generations?

Nagao, check your attitude please.

Kanetsugu was a key participant in the Otate Rebellion. If he hadn't secured the Takeda's alliiance, Kagetora would have likely won.

Usami Sadamitsu and Kanetsugu are comparable as they were the chief advisors for the Uesugi daimyo in two consecutive generations.

Any reason why he supported Kagekatsu during Otate?

(btw, sorry about that. I was just in a bad shape now)

Didn't Naoe Kanetsugu spark the entire Sekigahara struggle by writing an inflammatory letter to Ieyasu?

He, uh, had a wonky helmet?
Yea. I was looking through the official site and had my eye on this good looking strong-faced guy and clicked on it and o.0 on the enlarged picture.

Wasn't Naoe one of the sub warlords or something? He's not that...well. Great. It's overrated. I knew he wrote a letter insulting Ieyasu in someway but talked out of it and avoided punishment (which I think in that era was death or torture). Now THAT'S something great that I wanna learn! :XD

Actually, for the decisions he took, Naoe wasn't that much of an honor + love boy. He did things that most of the SW fans wouldn't believe he did.

Oh, and, yeah, Kanetsugu is overrated, if compared to men such as Usami Sadamitsu, Nagao Masakage and Uesugi Kagekatsu

Hold the thought. You telling me Naoe Kanetsugu never abused any of those words during his campaigns historically. OR his insulting letters? For all we know, those could have been his exact words. :uh:

As a matter of fact, was he ever compared to either of 'em? Far as I know, he wasn't overrated. Rather had way high expectations to live up to. Sure had fair share of his drawbacks. But was no total failure.

Indeed, he wasn't total failure, but I don't see people fangirl(boy)ing Sadamitsu or Masakage, for example, as much as they do with Kanetsugu. Actually, Naoe was a pretty good general

@DW:

Well, Kanetsugu's popularity was also largely because of the drama Tenchijin. It wasn't really accurate but it does boost his fame, probably to more than he deserves.

@Ziwen:

He probably had sense of honor (he had no concubine, for example), but I doubt he say "for honor blablabla" as much as he did in SW.

Stupid question, but how is "Naoe" pronounced? I've heard Now-way, No-ie, Now-ie, etc.
