hi guys. i'm kinda desperate. last week i applied a job on the net. and today, just now, a man called me and he said he was from a company and he received my application. badly, i can't remember since i applied in scome companies. but if not a secretary, then a receptionist. and then he interviewed me a bit on the phone with english. i wasn't prepared since i was lazing on bed, watching tv and then suddenly my phone rang. and he said they would like to interview me on oct 4 in english of course. you see, english isn't my first language. i do not so bad on writing, but as in for formal and face-to-face english i dunno. if i'm nervous, i'll be stutter and that will be bad. and in addition, the company is in the south while i'm in the west. do you guys think i should go on that day to be interviewed? and if yes, can you guys help me abit? what kind of outfit should i wear? can i wear jeans? and if you guys know more about job interview, can you tell me what the interviewers usually ask about? i need help >.< my feelings say i should get the job. but i dunno, i'm not prepared and kinda scared. this is my first time.... T_T thanks in advance. |

You should go. I had so much interviews so I have some experience. But you shouldn't be nervous, wear formally. Smile confidently and remember to be polite, saying good morning and sorry all the time. If they asked you the questions you're not confirmed dun make a face or reaction like put your lips out from your mouth if you're saying anything wrong. Just say sorry and request them to repeat the questions. No jeans! Wear formally. It's best in black suits. Then intro yourself a bit like your hobby is designing and you joined Warriors Orochi contest (prove that at least you're an active person) and also hardworking. Also you can say you're Christian to let them know you have religion and you're singing in the church as well. Just give them any good impression that you can have. Bout the questions they may ask, they may ask about your weakness, you can say it but make sure the weakness can be positive in the other hand and let them know you're improving it. Like "My weakness is it's hard for me to reject people's request, that makes me busy all the time and no time for myself. But in the other hand, I've learned new skill which also proves that I'm helpful!" Overall, just be confident! No jean remmeber!!! Wear formally and keep your sweet smile on your face. No worries if you don't understand them, let them know English isn't your first language and just ask them repeat if you can't catch out. Remember to think you'll only meet them once so no worries and don't panic, they don't eat people. Good luck and I'll pray for you, prepare well and perform well!!! |

Hmm I'll try my best! Most women I know and have seen that work in offices can't wear jeans. So go for trousers. Be polite, always smile, and look at him/her in the eyes, always. That's very important. Try not to stutter and if your nervous play the old trick. Imagine him naked! If it's a him lol. Prior warning, though. Don't do this if you find him attractive. Okay, next step. Come prepared! Make sure you mention the basics, that you have great, say great even if you aren't great, computer skills. And know of Microsoft Office, Excel, etc. And constantly train your knowledge on the Internet. You must sell yourself! Good luck! |

What a horrible advice wow... Sell yourself? ....... Let me give you my advice. Do what 'you' want to do, educate yourself in what 'you' want to know. selling the self... leave that to people who have no selfesteem, you are no slave of this world, the system should carry us but supresses us. Even in a system where money is necaserry you can evade this and set up your own work, maybe working with animals, maybe with children, i dont know what you like. But if you have second feelings about any job, dont rush into it thinking it makes you strong to do something against your essence. In reality it will destroy you. If you do like working far away for a company that cares nothing about you, go right ahead. |

Thats all well and good in the ideal world, but it all manner and fact, thats a load of bull. Very few people can start up a >>>sucessful<<< company that way, and keep it going. And you need working with children cards in many countries now adays, even in a supportive role when working with children. Police checks and all. I'd like to hear your theory on supression, as you cannot expect things to be free and to be handed to you on a silver plate. People that hire staff (my dad used to do so} want to see commitment to the job, if your not interested in working for them, then they won't be interested in hiring you. Selling yourself does not mean abandoning your beliefs, it just means showing them the best you can be so that they will hire you. This includes sporting awards, music levels, school scores, and references to previous jobs. Oh and don't imagine them naked, it never, ever works. Just remember that they are human too, and are probably expecting you to be a bit nervouse. Just act confidently, and it should be okay. (Though I'm no expert on that, I got my job via my brother who works at the same place.) Distance to the job is important but if you applied, then it must mean that you can get there with some ease at least. Its no point having a job 100km's away if, with travel, you'll hardly be earning any money. |

Everyone would say everything here that I would have said lol.. However here are a couple of things I'd recommend: - I always go smart and casual. It's really up to you though, but do what you think is right to wear. Basically, make it smart. - Talk about why you want to work for their company, shop etc. and keep on selling yourself. Keep on explaning and talking what you have to offer for who you're working for. - Tell a bit about yourself and what you do in your spare time. If you do some type of sport or work outside work/school then employeers really like that type of stuff.. I think  I hope this helps. I'm not the Donald "Top" Trump when it comes to this, I'm currently at volunteer work in a charity shop Bernardos.. haha! Good luck! |

oh my god, Mitha~chaaaaan Q_Q Goooooooood luck!!!! IReally can'T advise you much because I'Ve never had a job interview and I would F*ck up completely, I suppose, because I'm always nervous and don't talk much...But you'll do it!!! Just accept your nervousy, bathe in it, it's a natural thing. I felt the same way when I had to rad an essay infront of my entire school, and I wrote it @_@~ MY hands were all sweaty and I had fever and everything. But you'll sure do great, and if you don'T make it, then it wasn't meant to be and you can always try something else : ) I have confidence in you. But I wouldn't pull up an act and just be myself. Good luck, really!!! |

thanks, guys for the advices. you guys make me have a bit more confident. i'm lack of confidence in stuffs like this. and the problem is i applied many job applications in some different companies as graphic designer, receptionist (since i don't have experience), and secretary. this will be my first job so i think i have to gain experiences first. but too bad i'm sure this interview isn't for the graphic design. i think it'll be for secretary or receptionist job. i really forgot since i applied on the net. it's awful. and surely i couldn't ask at the man who called me 'sorry, but can you tell me which job i applied?' it'd ruin my points, i guess. but thanks a lot, really. i'm not good in facing people i don't know, so this will be a bravery test for me. and i don't know i'm lucky or God is too kind to me, this evening a lady in my church asked me if i can speak japanese. and i said yes. and she asked if i can speak english, i answered yes, betetr than japanese, at least. and then she offered me to be an teacher for two 40s men who wanna learn to speak indonesian. and they can speak english pretty well. honestly, i'd prefer this one better. but it's for part time job anyway. so i have to go interview to the first job *sighs* i'm feeling like can i do this? i'm afraid if i can't answer the questions, in my own language, i still have to think twice or third to answer formal questions, and in english? i'm not so sure... >.< and plus, i have to write a resume or CV that i should bring to the interview place. and i think i should bring the copies of some certificates as well, right? i don't know whow to write CV well. i know the basic but i don't know how to make a proper CV/resume. are there any good websites you know about CV/resume writing? chin: thank you very much for the info. it's really useful. and okay, i won't wear jeans. but i don't have trousers, as in for bottom, i only have mini skirts and jeans and of course i can't wear those. ok i'll figure it out. and too bad, chin, this one isn't for graphic design interview. indonesians will see your education more than skills i guess. and since i don't take any design major, so yeah... though if i somehow go to design interview, i'll mention about warriors orochi contest and other design contest i've joined of course and should i mention about i sing in the church? i mean, you know, most of residents here are not christian, and most of them dislike us. and WAIT, how did you know about sing in the church?? from will?? O_O and how did you know my weakness? omg, off topic, but thanks. you really help me, tho i still have to collect my confidence. :lol:LittleDragonZ: thanks a lot! well but most of the time, whenever i was nervous, i could just frown and show my fierce expression. and when i was nervous, my voice would be shaking. sell myself? at least, you made me crack up for a while, reducing my nervousness. and i don't think there will be any attractive guys there. thanks again, i'll try my best!Willxdiana : sorry, grandpa. i didn't know T_T Tesouken : haha thanks. i get what you mean and of course i won't sell myself and i love to work with children and animals. but here in my country there aren't many things i can do as a job. they're kinda picky and i'm just high school graduate and i don't attend university because of many reasons. but i'll try my best. and since this job i applied isn't my specialty, so i have some doubts about it. but at least, i have to try first. thanks again :lol:bain_nick: i see. so the commitment huh? i guess that's one of others i'm lacking of. this job isn't my specialty and i applied because i think i have to work and gain experience in work world, i didn't mean i make it as guinea pig. i get it about selling myself. show what i'm good at, right? ok, i won't imagine them naked, and i can't. i'm not good at it tho. oh lucky you, you get the job via your brother. if i have a connection, it'll be more simple. yes i think i can make it to the company somehow. but i just too lazy to have a long journey to t he company.

Mith - Chin gives you great advice and he done ALOT of interviews lol! First thing to remember is that you will lose absolutely nothing going to the interview and whatever happens you will gain important experience. So if you go to this interview whatever happens (even if you totally mess it up) you will be a winner. With the experience you gain in ur first try ur next interview will be easier and the third will be even easier than that. Second thing to remember is that the interview is a two-way process. This company wants to find the person that fits its requirement BUT you also want to find out if this job will be fulfilling and interesting for you. The worst thing you can do is when the interviewer asks you 'so why are you interested in this job' you say something like 'I just want it for the money'. You don't have to say silly things like 'I have always wanted to be a receptionist' just be truthful, I'm sure there are reasons other than money that make you want to get a job now and it's those things that the interviewer will really want to hear from you. In terms of clothes. Well, you really can't wear jeans ever to an interview. What you really want to do is match the style of what people wear in the jobs you want. So if it's a receptionist postion you should find out what receptionists wear in Indo and wear as close to that as possible (the interviewer will surely see ur best effort!). If it's a designer you can be more creative but remain smart. Other good guide for interview & CV is posted here: http://www.aswift.com/html/faqs/interview.jsp If you want I can help u write ur CV, I am an expert in CVs just ask Chin!! U got my email address so send what u done to me. |

If you actually go in for the interview, here's some posturing and body language tips I got from my old drama teacher. It works great for any sort of interview and auditions. - Dress nice! Like you're going out to a fairly fancy dinner or something. If you were an employer, would you rather hire someone who dresses and looks like a hobo, or someone who dresses and looks like a professional? An evening gown is overdoing it, but 'dressy-casual' clothes often work best. - Be confident! I'm TERRIFIED when I go to an interview, but if I at least pretend to be confident, they get a much higher impression. If you keep a smile and a cheerful demeanor, it makes an excellent impression. - If you are sitting, don't cross your legs and shrink into the chair. Sit tall, with both feet on the floor, and be sure to fully face the person conducting the interview. With one's leg crossed, you're turned sideways, thusly giving a sense of if you are turning away and distancing yourself from them. - Hand motions are good. However, be sure not to overdo it. Hand gestures to convey ideas are a good way to get one's point across, but if you wave your arms everywhere, it's... not so good. But if you keep your hands in your lap the entire time, you seem to be somewhat lifeless and unenthusiastic about the job. We certainly don't want that! That's about all I can think of, though I don't rightly know if there are any cultural aspects that would help or hinder you in any way. But good luck! I hope you get the job! |

ok guys, once again, thanks. yes, now i'm gaining the confidence i need for thursday morning. hope i can make it. and if they say "tell us about you" what should i say? i don't need to tell them everything about me, right? i think i'll babble too much about myself. i'd prefer they ask me questions. dunnie: omg! i have confidence for everything but not this. i used to careless about anything around me, but not this. but thans. OsotogariWarrior: thanks a lot. i'll try my best to smile. Selli: yes, thank you. i dunno but i have to smile a lot. hope they won't disgust Will: will, thanks for your advice. both you and chin have much experiences in this. thanks for the url link anyway, i'm reading it now. well, yes you motivated me to go to that interview. many thanks. i know it'd be alright, i hope so. and whether they hire me or not, i'd gain experience from this first job interview and the rest will be easier. but yes i have to think and practice for the answers i have to say when they ask me various tings i didn't know before. Willxdiana: thank you, it's so useful. i'm confused about how to write resume before and you gave me a source about it. Alegretto: ok, confident is the first thing i have to have in this. and i won't cross my leg, i'll be too nervous to do that anyway. thanks a lot. |

Aw, maybe I'm a bit late, there are already so many good advices here. So I'd like only to add a few things, if they can be helpful. Nothing is applicable to and good for all situations or purposes. Every thing you will say, do and wear, always think to the kind of job you will be hired to do. And don't worry if you are shy ^^, you don't have to speak a lot, just answer their questions directly and politely. Another thing: never say you are good at or able to do something if you aren't. Instead, say you are enthusiastic and willing to learn. In any case, I wish you the best of luck Mitha~chan! Let us know how it goes as soon as possible. |

man..i'm late too
.. Mitha~Chan dress nice and of course always smile  you want to make a good first impression. I'm sure also they have tons of questions for you, but reply honeslty to most of them
they'll expalin to you how things go in the company or the job you applied for. Nice touch on it Sera, yes like Sera said if you're not good at somthing say you're eager to learn in and you'll try your best. Confidence is KEY id an interview. You have to show them that you want the job and that you'll work very hard in it. Of course you're going to be nervous, but being a receptionist or a secretary involves socializing with people(which i'm sure you're very good at
) and also ok so you're not that well with speaking English, but as long as people understand you you're fine ^_^. Plus i'm sure they'll hire someone as beautiful as you B). Lol well hope that boosted your confidence even more good luck!
edit: post herer and tell us how it went!

thank you for everyone that commented on this thread. i was so confused and lack of self confidence until yesterday. but now i'm better, i think i can do it. all of your advices really help me out. i can't reply all of your posts, since i still have to prepare many things. and surely, Sera and Zhou Yu, i'll tell all of you how it went. just pray for me or tomorrow. i hope i don't screw up and mess everything. and yes, i still have a reserve job to teach the japanese men. so if they don't hire me, i won't be so sad. but i'll be sad because i disappoint everyone of you who have supported me. well, and the company i applied is a mining coal company and it's a pretty big company. and i just found out that more than 300 applicants applied to the company for the position i applied. well, i feel lucky since i'm one of the applicants that will be interviewed tomorrow. since they won't interview all of them, right? and as Willxdiana said goodness is one thing i must show. thanks again for everything i'll try my best for tomorrow.
