It's a loose connection to history. In the latter stages of the Sengoku Era foreign mercenaries had some involvement during the feuds of Japan. Characters like Amalia & Dominco while fictional are added to signify this, as well add more twists and turns in the story.

In a few of the missions Amalia and eh...what the hell was his name on the enemy side had fairly sizable roles against each other (Pablo or something?).

Anyway, they don't have major roles, moreso support ones on a few of the latter stages. And well one fictional scene many know involving Amalia & Hideyoshi...

I think his name was Pedro. Man that guy was a dirtbag, I remember when he defected to me I sent him on a suicidal mission to Aketchi. I assume the French names are there because European countries traded with Japan in history.

I did that as well.

I was like; well you screwed me over time to repay the favor. xD

But yeah, PotatoSamurai is on the same track as what I think. It's just to further recognize the countries did trade and had foreign merchants, mercenaries in Japan during the feudal area.

He was actually pretty usefull because he made all the enemy ambushes give up their positions and I charged through them all. He also had some pretty strong attacks to hold his own. Too bad he didn't die but in chapter 13 I'm sure he does.

They were Portuguese foreigners as I recall... except Amalia who was supposed to be from Finland I think, and who spoke like an English drama student trying to be a Spanish German XD

Foreign mercenaries yeah... the Portuguese also didn't mind their own business and went to Japan to have a good nose around too.

Sanchez was the best foreigner. haha... Mexican Yukimura XD

The French didn't appear in this game, it was the Portugese and Dutch, this is one of the reasons why Kessen's historical accuracy is much better than SW's. I think Pedro's betrayal had more to it than Nobunaga gaining the upperhand in the battle, maybe it had to do with the Portugese appreciating Nobunaga's politics and ways of handling things, how he greeted foreigners historically.

The last battle was really hard for me, most of my best officers' conditions were low and I had to do the "Rampage" thing a couple of times. And I left it to Pedro to sacrifice himself for revealing enemy ambushes too!

That would be a more moral reason to defect but with a guy like Pedro I think it was because he saw he was outnumbered and he didn't want to die, so he switches over to the side he feels is going to win.

I suppose it's going with history, (Game-Wise.) at the time all sorts of foreigners were going to Japan, showing them goods from their own countries. Dutch, a few others, that's why in a certain point of the game you can buy their goods while visiting a merchant.
