If Cao Cao won the battle of Guan Du, where he showed testament that numbers aren't everything, why was he so confident that his sheer numbers would win 8 years at the Battle of Chi Bi? |

IM guessing thats because, he knew that yuan shao was an inept leader, who didnt listen to anyone, so he knew it was going to be easy, but when he came to chi bi, shu were already on the back foot, so he mustve though "ok, ill finish them, i got enough numbers, they cant touch me". then again, this may all be wrong, this is just my thought on the issue |

The fact is that many rulers when they have overwhelming numbers against the enemy usually tend to be overconfident because of it. Yuan Shao was no exception, he had some decent numbers but that made him think little of the strategic values of military and he totally got his ass kicked because of it. Cao Cao didn't have the numbers back then and knew he couldn't win through numbers but rather thorugh tactical genius. Since he did have the numbers at the Battle of the Red Cliffs, he got lazy since his army was larger then everyone elses army at the time and since the previous battles he was in were battles where he really just swarmed the enemy and totally took them out with his numbers. With the numbers he had and the continuous victories he had, he simply got cocky and got pwned when he paid little attention to the fire plan. |

I say he lost in Chi Bi because of fate, obviously. The wind "magically" went from his favor to against him. Don't forget that he's fighting against Wu which consists of pirates and well-trained marines. Also don't forget that Cao Cao travelled 300 li a day till he reached Changban and fought Liu Bei, his forces were tired. He did what he could, chined the ships together to prevent sea sick, knew the fire attack would happen but the winds were at his favor. Besides, the numbers were like 80,000 Vs 50,000 so it's not that much of an advantage. (As it was made to be in the SGYY) And, a cornered pray will fight back. Wu did well, I think Huang Gai thought of the fire attack while the ships were retreating, so it wasn't planned before hands. Although I did head some Wu veterans asked the local about the weather and did anticipate the change of winds. |

That's what I read, the million-man vs 250,000 theory, too. But I think the 250,000 vs 50,000 is the actual number o_O. Don't know about the 80,000 vs 50,000 |
