Genre: Third Person Action/Fighting Available on: PS2 & Xbox 360 (Now also on PC & PSP - March 08) Japan Release Date: 21 March 2007 US (NTSC) Release Date: 18 September 2007 EU (PAL) Release Date: 21 September 2007 Description: Warriors Orochi is the first culmination game combining a number of elements and most importantly the characters of both the Dynasty Warriors & Samurai Warriors series (with the exception of SW2XL). For the first time fans of the Warriors titles can combine their favourite characters from each of the main franchises in a more refreshing and more light-hearted style. Story Review: The combination of Dynasty Warriors & Samurai Warriors is due to the serpent king Orochi, in order to provide himself the ultimate test of his abilities he creations a fusion of the Three Kingdoms Era (Dynasty Warriors) & the Sengoku Era (Samurai Warriors) to test his might against the most mighty and powerful of warriors from these two eras. The fusion forces former alliances to fall as distrust creeps in as Orochi plots their downfall, while his right hand woman in Da Ji latches onto the various armies like a parasite, while acting as an ally to closely monitor them. The usage of the new characters of both Orochi & Da Ji work quite well, and provide a unique fictional story to make the combination possible. Basically a crazy unrealistic plot that allows Warriors Orochi to be, it does the job but doesn't compare to the story in the likes of DW & SW. 6/10 Graphics/Sound: No real need to go into major detail here, basically DW5 + SW2 more of less = Warriors Orochi. And as per usual the graphic power of the Xbox 360 is slightly, but noticeably better compared to the PS2 version. 7/10 Battle System: Pretty much everything you have witnessed in prior Warriors titles still exists, Musou attacks, 2 player mode etc. Although specifically in Warriors Orochi each character has a new and extremely powerful R1 attack. Most comparable to the new unique attacks witnessed in Samurai Warriors 2 in place of the aging bow. Here these attacks are extremely mighty, and their benefit and style is dependant on three different classes, Power, Technique & Speed. Power: allow for powerful attacks, generally of the one hit variety which cause great power and the ability to piece enemy defence, while at a high Musou consumption expense. Power warriors also have stronger recoil ability against ranged attacks and can still move freely when fired at, although they still take damage of course. Technique: generally allow for ‘super charging’ of traditional charge attacks, rather then Square, Square, Triangle for example can become Square, Square, R1 which on most occasions leads to a far more powerful charge attack. This of course allows you many more options in the attack string, technique warriors also benefit from a quick fire counter attack option. These too consume some of the Musou gauge, although generally not as much as those in the power category. Speed: commonly offers quicker style attacks with low, or even no Musou gauge consumption. This allows for more freedom during attacks with the ability to break an attack sequence at your leisure by simply jumping out of it. They too benefit from a double jump technique, although not as great as those which the Ninja’s have in SW2, here is purely to aid in evasive tactics. The R1 attacks are an amazing addition, the only criticism I have of them however is at them they are frankly quite broken, Mitsunari & Mitsuhide for example. Also generally Musou’s tend to be of far lesser importance to them, which is a change of thinking I’m not entirely fond of. To me the Musou attack should be the one that can change a battle when used well, not an R1 attack which is even more efficient then a Musou itself, the attacks are amazing but can make the game too easy at times. Another of the new aspects is the three character interchange feature, while you battle with one character at a time; you will have two others available resting and ready for action by simply switching them into battle. If the character you are using is low on health, or simply drained of their Musou gauge you can simply swap another in and continue to battle away. This also means you can have a mix of Dynasty Warriors & Samurai Warriors characters in your active team, which is awesome to have 3 of your best characters all available at the same time! Finally Warriors Orochi has added in the horse call ability, for everyone! The concept of course started in Samurai Warriors with Yukimura & Keiji having it as a special ability, but now it can be done regardless of who you are. Which no doubt helps cover the typical speed weakness of some characters. Overall the gameplay offers a faster pace and more flexibility in battle then we are used to in the prior titles, which is fresh and enjoyable. The only downside is this can make the game easier, and the only way the game seems to make up for it is by giving you more moronic allies whom are far more likely to get defeated before you then ever before. The pros outweigh the cons overall though in my opinion, yet another case of awesome gameplay, which is a little different this time around. 8.5/10 Replay Value: Overall it’s not as enjoyable to replay to DW5 or SW2, essentially there are just the four story modes, while long they certainly do not last as long as other Warriors titles. You’ll probably want to play it enough to give all the characters a run though and see the changes that have been made to their move sets, particularly the R1 attacks. 6/10 PSP Version: For those that are able to get a copy of the PSP version read this section, if not move onto the Final Thoughts. Japan Release Date: 21 February 2008 US (NTSC) Release Date: 21 March 2008 EU (PAL) Release Date: 28 March 2008 Warriors Orochi: PSP is quite possibly the best Warriors title on PSP yet. For the first time the handheld version will offer full size battlefields, just like those witnessed in the home console versions, the fragmented style maps of the prior PSP titles is no more! In fact, for the first time a Warriors PSP title is more or less a direct port of the PS2 version, the only noticeable thing which has changed is some of the in game story scenes have been replaced by a slightly more cartoon style with screenshots used in place of full scenes, which still offer voiced dialogue. For example the early scene in the Samurai Warriors story of Nobunaga running by Guan Ping and rescuing him is replaced by a few screenshots as apposed to a full scene. And don't fret, the few movie style scenes, such as the opening and the army endings are still present and look as great as they do on the PS2! That aside, not much at all has changed, obviously the buttons are slightly different as there are two less trigger buttons on the PSP. This basically means you use the D-pad to interchange characters (left & right) and to adjust the map (up & down) instead of trigger buttons on a hand controller…very easy to adjust too. If you and a mate have a PSP and the game you can also connect and play it as a two player version, I haven’t tried it myself but refer to the instruction manual to get tips on how to set it up! If you prefer handhelds and have yet to get a copy of the game this would be well worth considering on the PSP, as very little is compromised and you clearly get the benefit of having the game mobile! Final Thoughts: If you’re an addict of KOEI hack n’ slash games then you’ll no doubt enjoy it & appreciate the changes they have made to the game, that and the obvious benefit of having all the characters from both SW & DW series in the one title. Although once that luxury and the new features wear off there is not too much else to love about the game. Not the best in the Warriors library, but probably the most unique of them which makes it worth borrowing off a friend or renting for a few nights at the very least. Rating: 7/10 *Based on the PS2 version of the game |

Thank you, I think it's well thought out, I personally like the Samurai Warrior and Dynasty Warrior series alone. |

Thanks for the review Sakon. It's really informative. Hope those who haven't got the game can decide whether to invest on the game or not after reading this. All you need to know are in there.
I totally agree with your opinion on Replay Value. Even thou with 79 characters and nearly 60 stages from both DW and SW, there isn't much to do except unlocking artworks and forth weapons. Koei didn't make good use of each stage like they did in DW5 and SW2 for this game. So it's quite a short game if you're not a perfectionist. That's my thought thou

Not counting Taigong Wang, Kiyomori and Yoshitsune, if I were one of the programmers at Koei, I think it would be best if Samurai Warriors 2: XL would be made first before the production of this game so that Toshiie, Gracia, Motochika, Katsuie, and Kojiro, would be playable, wouldn't you agree? Don't get me wrong, I love Warroirs Orochi so much, that it's practically the only game that I'm playing right now. Good music, great voice acting, and very easy on obtaining each character's 4th weapon, although it would be cool if there were 5th weapons in the game. Also, I love all the dialogue, especially the Dynasty and Samurai Warriors that are on the Wei side. One example would be in Wei Chapter 3-X when you have Mitsunari Ishida on your side and you encounter Goemon Ishikawa, they said: Mitsunari Ishida: "You know what they say? Don't do the crime, if you aren't smart enough to get away with it!" Goemon Ishikawa: "Why you little! When I get out of here, I'm gonna smash you good!" Or in SW Chapter 3, when Xiao Qiao disobeys Sakon Shima: Xiao Qiao: "Okay, everyone, charge!" Sakon Shima: "Charge? Not yet, you fools." Xiao Qiao: "Just as well I was so nice to everyone, huh?" Sakon Shima: "Yes, you do realize we're here to fight and not to collect autographs?" I just find those lines funny. |

Basically if you enjoyed DW5 & SW2 then you would be very likely to love this game as well Chibicchi~~^3^. The new R1 attacks and interchange feature is quite refreshing to having to battle with the one character all the time, and it's also quite nice to see KOEI finally get some room for flexibility with the story. Because it goes without saying we pretty much know will happen in DW & SW, this time however it's a little more in the unknown, which is a good thing for a change. |

Yeah well if you have PSP you can get the PSP version because it's very addictive - but if you have PS2 I think maybe you should wait for WO2 because I don't think you can finished all WO1 before WO2 is out so yeah. WO2 is clearly more fun. |

This review is pretty good. Your thoughts on this game are a lot more fair compared to the ones found on video game sites such as IGN. |

Thanks, I'm not a fan of IGN reviews etc either myself, they tend to focus more on the negatives then the positives, I just write it as how I see it. In fact, I might add a PSP part to the review soon actually, since I'm playing this on PSP at the moment. The PSP version is just as good, the few odd in game story scenes are cut back to basically screenshots to save space, but the main movies are still there and everything else, full maps unlike prior PSP titles etc. I think it's definately the best Warriors title on PSP yet! Edit: PSP section added! |

Great review for the PSP part too. PSP version is indeed addictive, perhaps you could change your title to "Warriors Orochi + PSP Review"? Nice done, Fayt! |

Fair point, may as well make it more known it covers both, I added the brackets to make it more obvious. PSP version is awesome too, I like it more then the PS2 actually. It's the same product essentially, but it's mobile! In the car, in bed...I can use 3 of my fav characters at the same time - anywhere! |
