I always used to see marathons of the original Battlestar Galactica on TV when I had the rare chance {for lack of a better word} to tune in, and I got a huge kick out of how campy it was. I’m talking truckloads of classic sci-fi cheese. So when I started hearing about a new remake, needless to say I was a skeptic. The campy atmosphere is amusing in a nostalgic sort of way, but it certainly didn’t need to be done again. Yet still, I heard more and more about how cool this show was. Finally I was convinced to try it out, and I learned that it’s absolutely nothing like the original show. There are some plot and character relations, sure, and a few little fanservice throwbacks here and there, but the new BSG is a completely different animal. I’m not even sure it fits the heading of sci-fi, despite the spaceships and androids and such. Battlestar Galactica begins with the destruction of the world. Not our world, mind you, but the twelve others supporting human life, called the 12 Colonies. BSG history states that 13 human tribes left their homeworld of Kobol. 12 went to colonize the planets that became the colonies. The other took a different and now largely forgotten path, and ended up settling on the planet Earth. Ok, so let’s forget about Earth. The Colonies were destroyed by an android race called the Cylon. Not alien, mind you - the Cylon were originally mechanized servants created by humanity, but they rebelled and were only beaten back at great cost. Quite a few years later, the Cylon were all but forgotten. Most people didn’t even consider them a threat anymore, and few could’ve imagined them engineering flesh-and-bone models that look and feel exactly like humans. Few indeed. The series begins with one of these Cylon sleeper agents - the hot blonde in the included picture - seducing and making good use of a prominent programmer and scientist and his government security clearance to completely subvert the colonies’ defenses and pave the way for a Cylon fleet to nuke them all to hell. It worked, for the most part. The only battlestar {something akin to a modern battleship or carrier, except in space} to survive the assault was the about-to-be-retired Galactica, and its crew finds themselves extremely busy trying to survive the holocaust and protect what’s left of humanity in the form of a rag-tag fleet of civilian ships and freighters. They do manage to survive, but their outlook doesn’t improve much as they’re constantly harried by Cylon pursuit and plagued by a whole slew of internal issues. The series continues on in this form as it focuses on the issues, internal and external, that arise from constant running and fighting and the near-genocide of the human race. Expect plenty of action - deep space dogfights, gunfights, fistfights... Loads of drama, suspense and political intrigue. It’s also home to some interesting queries into human nature and other deeper issues, excellent acting and production quality, and some great special effects. One of the most interesting things about Battlestar Galactica is where it chooses to place its focus. It avoids the tendency of many sci-fi series to get bogged down in technology and the like, instead aiming for things people are familiar with - nukes, fighter wings much like you’d find on a sea-faring carrier today, contemporary military and political structure... All the way down to the familiar style of dress. It may be a sci-fi series, but it’s about as light on the sci-fi as you can possibly get. Instead it favors suspence, action, character development and drama - to focus on both the global and personal repercussions of the events that take place. This strategy is bolstered by excellent acting all around, with particularly notable performances by Edward James Olmos {Galactica’s chief officer, Commander Adama}, Mary McDonnell {education minister-turned-president Laura Roslin}, and James Callis {loopy, self-absorbed and traitorous scientist Gaius Baltar}. Battlestar Galactica is easily on par with any of the popular big-name thrillers even outside the sci-fi genre {I’m talking popular shows like 24} in terms of action and suspense, but it brings so much more to the table in terms of a well-thought-out plot, great acting, and interesting commentary on the nature of humanity and other such lofty topics. In a sense, I hate that it’s even labeled as sci-fi, because that causes quite a few people to instantly dismiss a show they’d otherwise love, which is quite a shame. Hopefully this review might convince one or two of them {and the rest of you - you know who you are} to give it a shot. Just make sure you set aside enough time to delight in 3 seasons’ worth of great episodes if you do. |

My friend is a huge fan of this show and she's trying to convert me! When I head back to school we're planing on watching some of the DVDs, I'll get back to you on what I think. But I'm sure I'll like it, I'm a huge Star Wars fan and I like other Sci-Fi shows like Firefly & Stargate Atlantis. |

Trust me, this show is up there with Star Wars and the likes. I can't say I quite like this series more then Star Wars, but it's damn good I should say. Of course, that's if you want to label it as a sci-fi as to compare it to Star Wars. As I said in the earlier post, I find it hard to do so. |

I just watched the mini-series last night!! I loved it! It was about 3 hours long but seemed much shorter because I was very interested in it. I was really impressed with the special effects, but what I enjoyed the most was how character-driven it was. I teared up so many times because I was actually very concerned for the characters. And the cliff hanger!! Boomer is a Cylon model?? She was one of my favorite characters because of how human she was... how ironic! And I'm curious to know if the Cylon lady (blonde chick in red dress) is really the Scientists guy's imagination or a chip implant... but my friend told me it still hasn't been explained! Now, I'm not sure if you wanted to discuss the old Battlestar Galactica or the new show that's currently on Sci-Fi channel, because the new one is the one I have watched (the mini series only so far, mind you). My friend lent me the first 4 episodes of the 1st actual season on DVD, so I'm eager to get watching it as soon as I have some major free time! 8) Also, you should write movie reviews or something, your first post is very well-written, I like your style. |

I personally only watched the old Battlestar Galactica because It made me lol. When I look at the new Battlestar Galactica, I just find it surprising how such a lame old TV series could rise up from the flames and become something so utterly great. When it comes to the older Battlestar Galactica, I know very little of it. Glad you're enjoying BSG. I'm almost to the end of watching season 3. I enjoyed the three-hour mini-series too. Heh, here's a random bit of trivia for you. You know when Laura Roslin came sworn in as president on the space liner after Adar's death and name it "Colonial One"? Well this is a rather allusive reference to the swearing in of Lyndon B. Jhonson {36th president of the US} on Air Force One after JFK's assassination. Also, that scene with Cami playing with the doll was a reference to Lyndon's campaign commercial against Barry Goldwater. |

Oh, how interesting, I didn't pick up on that reference to Lyndon Johnson, thanks for pointing that out! That's rather cool. I had no idea the original BG was so lame though, hahahah. I'll have to ask my friend if she's seen it. xD |

I recently just watched BSG:Razor. I’ve put off watching this one for quite a while so that I could see it with my brother and my old man - both of whom I’ve turned into big BSG fans. I finally got the two of them together with time to spare for a movie, and we were well overdue for our Galactica fix. Razor fits in after season 3, though most of its material falls in the relative past so you could probably watch it after finishing season 2. The plot begins with Lee Adama (Apollo) being promoted and taking command of the Battlestar Pegasus. If you remember, it had a rather difficult time after reuniting with Galactica, losing its longtime commander, Admiral Cain, and then two other commanding officers in short succession. In order to show respect to Admiral Cain’s legacy and help the Pegasus crew regain its pride, Apollo appoints one of Cain’s trusted officers, Kendra Shaw, as his new executive officer . The plot focuses heavily on Shaw, her conflicts with certain crewmembers {namely Starbuck}, and coping with her past as the Pegasus is dispatched to rescue a missing Raptor crew. Much of the story is told in the past, fleshing out events that were only mentioned in passing in the main series {the background of the Six who infiltrated the Pegasus crew, for instance, or Cain’s ruthless scavenging of a beleaguered civilian fleet}. There are even some throwbacks to the original Battlestar Galactica, as in the process of rescuing the missing crew they encounter a fleet of Cylon relics from the earlier wars {which are modeled after those in the original series} that also ties into Admiral Adama’s past. All in all, I found that Razor is every bit as good as the BSG television series, though not long enough to capture its full range of depth and glory. |

Oh good, I'm glad it's up to par with the series! I'm actually just finished watching the 2nd episode of season 2.0, the last few episodes have been INTENSE! I was crying a lot. I think at the moment, I really like the characters Billy, Helo, and Gaeta... and even Saul Tigh. I've always like the more obscure characters I guess. Billy, 'cause he's simply adorable and a reasonable guy, just plain likeable. Helo's tough, strong, enduring... but realizes through his experiences with Caprica Boomer that the Cylons are capable of sincere human characteristics. I'm interested to see where their story goes, very interested. Gaeta doesn't have much personality, but to me their is something intriguing about him, plus he is incredibly intelligent and... well quite good looking in my opinion! As for Tigh, many people don't really care for him... I know he has so many flaws, but I think he's a really interesting character. I can't help but feel bad for him, and how helpless and apprehensive he feels about commanding without Adama. Anyway, I LOVE this series... gonna watch more tonight! I found this video, I think you'll get a kick out of it, Drewe. It's a song about the differences between the original and new BSG, it's funny. xD http://youtube.com/watch?v=4Kve1oGPjf8 |

Drewe, why haven't you responded yet? I need someone to geek out with here!! Did you get the chance to watch season 3? Because it's not even out on DVD yet... or did you catch it last year when it aired on Sci-Fi? I don't know what I'm going to do, since season 3 isn't released on DVD until AFTER season 4 airs on TV (how lame is that?) ...I'm hoping season 3 is available to watch on scifichannel.com or else I'll have to find episodes synopsizes somewhere... I'm already half-way through with season 2.5... so that's why I'll be upset if I can't watch season 3 before season 4 airs, I'll don't want to have to skip it or miss out on the debut of season 4... >_< |

Errr.... Sorry. Anyway, that video was awesome. I just loved how they used clips from the old and new BSG. Classic video. I've been watching season three through the Space Network. I don't get Sci-Fi channel here in Canada, so I guess that means I'm lucky to have the Space network then. I feel sympathy for you not being able to watch BSG season three. But hey, I guess all I can say is that you should wait until the DVD comes out and only watch a limited amount of season 4... Not sure what to say here dudette...

Space Network? I wish we had something like that here in the states... Sci-Fi has too many lame horror movies... Well, I have one last disk for season 2.5... BUT I found a site that I can watch Season 3 on for FREE!! I think it's called stage6.com or something... looks a little sketchy, but it'll be worth it! And now for Manji_Ninja's rant about season 2.5... *Spoiler Warning!* BILLLY!!!! WHY?? It happened so fast! I mean, I didn't even cry, and I like his character a lot! When he got hit, I was like "Oh, he'll be okay, no one major has died yet..." THEN BAM! Next scene, he's dead in the morgue! I couldn't even react to it. Also...I DO NOT LIKE LEE/DEE RELATIONSHIP!! >:( I hate Baltar but I can't help but like his character for some reason... <_< What about you, who do like/dislike? |

I liked Baltar. I'm not really a huge fan of the whole obssession he has with 6, but the whole case with him accidently killing off his own race was pretty cool in the sense to how it happened. I like characters like him that have an intelligent edge on them. I like the whole idea of him changing his dialect to Aerelon just so he could get a better reputation in the future. Shrewed bastard.... Billy... Bah. He was never much of a character. It's obvious the developers intended that he was going to one of those short lived characters that served for the purpose of character development with the other characters such as Roslin. I personally was mild in my liking for him, but he did a good job serving his purpose I suppose. I can't say I really disliked any of the characters. But I guess I could say I find the old cylon models to be really retarded. |

Hahaha, that's funny, because the ONE thing I actually LIKE about Baltar is his obsession/love for Caprica Six! But maybe that's just because I'm a sucker for tragic love. But yes, he is certainly an interesting character... despite being a terrible person. I like Billy just because he was so down to Earth and sincere. I really felt terrible for him when Dee turned down his proposal... he was a sweet guy. I just finished the end of season 2.5 on Saturday! Everything has been turned upside down! Baltar is president, they settled on a planet for a year, Kara is married and had long hair, Cali is pregnant with Tyrol's child, and OMG, the Cylon's have invaded and Baltar surrenders!! Cliff hanger! But I can't move on to season 3 until this weekend... I have a crap load of studying to do this week, so I can't have any distractions! By old cylon models, do you mean the Centurions? I think they look pretty awesome. |

I meant those crappy robots from the old BSG... But yeah, the centurions are awesome. Yeah it sure does get crazy around the end of the 2end season... I just recently finishing watching about half of season three I think.... I lost count of where I'm at. Now I have to do a number of things like homework and work and the like. |

T____T Stage Six closed down!! I tried watching episodes off of sidereel.com, but the links they provide only contain like 20 minutes of each episode! Grrr! So, I've only made it to the 5th episode of Season 3. >__< GAH! And it left off right when the council was deciding is Gaeta is guilty or not from crimes against humanity. It's killing me inside... I luff Gaeta. Please don't die next!! But my friend is currently downloading all seasons from a torrent file (I can't do it myself, my internet provider is through the campus, and it blocks the download some how). Well, after he downloads season 3, he's gonna trying sending it to me via FTP transfer... so hopefully I'll get to see it soon!! Also, out of sheer boredom, I tried watching the old BSG. Couldn't watch for more than 15 minutes... utter cheese. Also, in the old BSG, was Apollo played by the same actor who now portrays Tom Zarek in the new BSG (Richard Hatch, right)? I thought that was kinda neat though. |

Okay, I'm really liking Season 4 so far. I liked Season 3 as well, but Season 4 is much better I don't think it's a spoiler for me to say this at this point. In season 4... Rosalin = Hillary Clinton Apollo = Barack Obama Rosalin's disease as an inexorable march toward death is reminiscent of Hillary's doomed campaign. Meanwhile we have Lee Adama stepping into politics and taking on the President.. Rosalin is accusing him of being naive and idealistic. {and last week he attended what some would consider a "controversial church service." Hahaha.} No doubt, BSG is still the best show on television as of right now. Also, see if you find this amusing. I've recently been hearing this copypasta about how Racetrack {the background character, the girl Raptor pilot with dark brown hair} is the final Cylon. It basically goes over roughly half a dozen events throughout the history of Racetrack in this series in which she encountered what should have been a fatal accident. She's been in two or three MAJOR crashes, she came within a second of a cylon missile, etc etc and after last week's crash. Wow, I mean, she came out of it without a scratch? That's abnormal for BSG. I don't think it's accurate, but it's still weird. Maybe she's sleeping with the writing staff. |

I don't have tv so I can't watch season 4 til it comes out on dvd D: It sucks. My favorite character is #3 (lol not just because she's played by Lucy Lawless...) because she's very interesting
Also like Helo and Gaeta pretty well. But really most of the characters are quite spiffy.Has #3 been in season 4 much? (if any) |

Season 4 I think has been rather uneventful so far, but I'm staying hopeful... But wow, that is any interesting and well supported theory on Racetrack... @Jorgh: As for #3, I think 6 mentioned she wanted the Brother Cavils to remove her entire unit from cold storage, but this agreement was never made... can't really say more otherwise it'll spoil too much. And yay! Another Felix Gaeta fan! He needs more screen time!! |

I guess that's understandable. Though I do love how this season that all of the characters have somewhat embraced a sort of "polar opposite" personality. Rosalin is a dictator and Baltar is selfless. There've been so many major events since New Caprica, and all of the characters were so imperfect to begin with, but now it just seems like they've had a total break with their old values. Eick and Moore said that when they came up with this re-make concept, they really wanted to explore the sociological and psychological trauma that would be involved in a civilization on the brink of total extinction and they've done it. I'm almost inclined to the belief that the final cylon is someone who died earlier in the series. I know they've talked about how Season 4 will really redefine what it means to be a "Cylon," but I think I'm pretty damn open minded already about what a "Cylon" can be. |

Yeah, but in Baltar's case, I'm not really sure if I can trust his intentions. At first, I thought he was just totally BSing so he could have the protection of his fanatical "groupies." Even now I'm not sure if this is still the case, or if he truly believes what he is telling his followers... Starbuck... well I can't help but say what a complete B*tch she is now, it's rather frustrating, 'cause I enjoy her character a lot, especially her flaws. But she's treating Anders like trash and putting her entire crew in jeopardy. By the way, I just saw Razor for the first time last night. So I just found out about the prophetic message the old guy Hybrid on the cylon basestar told Shaw before she set off the nuke. "Kara Thrace is the harbinger of death." WOW. That's an eyeopener.... I can't imagine how she's gonna react when she hears this for herself on this weeks episode. Also, does anyone else have a problem with Tory's actress? She's really an attractive women and all.. but her acting is so incredibly... FLAT. I find her to be the least interesting of the Final Five, even if she did kill Cally... So if you believe the final cylon to be someone who died earlier... who do you suspect? Let's see... we have Billy, Kat... um, someone more minor? |

His transformation has been coming ever since New Caprica. He was despondent, self-indulgent, and lethargic after Gina killed herself with the nuke, he became positively fatalistic after the Cylons took over the planet. When Gaeta pointed the gun at him in Exodus Part 2, you realized that Gaius Baltar was no longer "with us." His time on the Cylon base ship was obviously even more trauma on top his fragile psyche. He seemed to briefly flirt with his old personality after he was returned to the Galactica and began interacting with his old associates. But since the trial and the beatings, it seems he's really embracing this new persona. There's obviously still shades of the past, but he seems like he wants to preach monotheism, he wants to demolish the old gods, and I think he wants to die. It's obvious that his storyline is intertwined with severe physical pain and psychological trauma. I think his transformation is real. In my opinion, he's still the best character on the show. James Callis will never have another character better for him than this one. On the subject of Starbuck, I fricken LOVE the new Starbuck. I love that she spent season 3 indulging all of her demons, and now she's gone even beyond that. Even without the death/rebirth, she had alienated everyone from her. I love the fact that she treats Anders like **** now. I never really liked Anders, but I love the interaction between him and Starbuck since he found out he was a Cylon. It's like he needs to cling to her to validate his Humanity and his normalcy, even though she's gone so far outside the realm of "normal" at this point, and she wants nothing to do with any of them. Yeah. Tory's actress is a bit weak. |

Okay, time to bump the BSG thread with a discussion about this weeks episode, "Faith!" But before I go into that... I'm just so used to thinking that Baltar is only looking out for himself. I wasn't expecting such a dramatic change in his personality... But as you have pointed out, there has been a progression in his personality, just in subtle ways. But now that he's actually preaching on a daily basis it does seem feesable that he truly wants to spread the word of his God. However, I can't say I find the new Baltar as exciting as the old Baltar... though he's still one of the most interesting characters. I still think the entire "groupie-cult" is just so bizarre. He's luckier than he deserves... Also, I'm kinda upset he hasn't made any attempts to visit Caprica Six. : [ Unless we're to assume he wouldn't be granted such access. Well, I for one, was GLAD to see old Starbuck back for a change in "Faith." She finally snapped back to reality when she realized how irrational her behavior was... although, I think Gaeta now has even more reason to hate her (remember she had a part in almost getting him airlocked), so I think that combined with Anders shooting him in the leg will only fuel his anger if it ends up being amputated. It'll be interesting to see if that goes anywhere... I have to say I wanted Sam to place his hand in the Clyon goo control panel, but he retracted at the last minute!! What a tease! Natalie killing the other Six was also pretty unexpected, and that kiss too, haha. ... Then the Hybrid, I REALLY hope we find out more about them, because to me I feel there's a lot that should be explained about their existence. So according to the Hybrid's prophecy, the Final Five are from Earth apparently... and they should be able to find the way to Earth!! Then you see Sam's face and he's like "The way to Earth?" O_o Hahaha. I wonder if they're planning on unboxing the D'Anna's right away... I mean, where do they even box them? It's gotta be on a separate ship, don't you think? All in all, I think this was the best episode of Season 4... it was about time, gods dammit! Also, if you're ever bored and in need of a laugh, I suggest checking out the BSG Bomb Thread at SciFi.coms forums... it's hilarious, they take pictures from the show and caption them and/or add comic like effects, some are just frakin' genius. http://forums.scifi.com/index.php?showtopic=2305086  EDIT: Nice, avatar, btw.

The best episode of season 4, I think, was tbe episode two weeks ago. There were some pretty dramatic twists, and I'm really psyched that they're building up for another epic space battle - those have been the subject of some of my favorite episodes in the entire series, like the rescue mission to New Caprica or the attack on the Cylon refinery early on. The battle in the opening episode was pretty impressive visually, but it didn't have enough length/substance to really count. The way the plot has been progressing steadily with a pretty consistent balance of action, drama and intrigue says to me that it's been planned out from the start. Some people may not like the direction they've taken, sure, but it doesn't seem at all like they're stretching to make the show run longer. |

I heard they might be making more movies this summer, similar to Razor, only to tie the beginning of season 4 to the end of season 4 (which won't debut until early next year). I can't believe Romo Lampkin is coming back. And I thought all his crazy fans were supporting a lost cause, but I guess not. I thought he was an interesting character, but all the episodes he was in were rather dull... |

Also like Helo and Gaeta pretty well. But really most of the characters are quite spiffy.
