Lampkin is the lawyer who was defending Baltar, right? If so, that's great news because he was friggin' awesome.

As for the whole "alien make-up" bit, I definitely think that's one of BSG's strong points, staying so grounded rather than falling prey to all the things that plague cheesy sci-fi series and movies. That said, the alien thing doesn't bother me much in cases where it doesn't detract from the rest. Take Star Wars, for instance - it never really feels out of place - instead the diversity and detail enhance the atmosphere, I think. But tossing in a bunch of weird outfits and strange skin colors and the like just because something falls under the sci-fi heading is a pretty awful practice.

Yeah, he's back, and I can't say if he's either completely crazy or a frakkin' genius.

I agree, I like that about BSG as well. Apparently in the original BSG, the Cylons were created by some race of alien lizards? That seems completely random to me. I'm glad it was changed to the humans because it provides a means for their rebellion and later attack on the human race.

As for the latest episode "Sine Qua Non."
It was bit... wordy and talky if ya know what I mean. The only interesting bit was that Saul is a dirty old man and Adama goes out on his own to look for Roslin! I've been wanting them to get together for so long now, haha.

I think the decision to make Cylons the creation of Humans was THE choice which made BSG the quintessential post-911 drama.

Sure there's the apocalypse which strikes suddenly and throws the civilization into frenetic panic, but the Cylons are the creation of the Colonials just as the Al Qaeda was the creation of America. The series should really be looked at as a challenge to America.

I always think back to that speech from Adama in the 2003 miniseries. "You can't play God and then wash your hands of the things you've created. Sooner or later, the day comes when you can't hide from the things you've done." That's a direct challenge to America in a post-911 world. We went overseas in the Cold War, we played the role of the "God of War" deciding who would rise and who would fall; which ideology should flourish, and which should vanish. We created the Mujahideen to fight the Soviets and when the war was over, we just dropped them in Afghanistan and turned our backs.

"We never asked ourselves whether we deserved to survive."

I find that friggen brilliant.... God I love this show.

Hm, that's certainly reading into things quite a bit... however, one is free to interpret things however they wish.

I do agree with Adama's speech though. I very much like it myself. It's incredibly powerful... although as a message to Americans? That I'm not entirely sure about. Though honestly I know very little about the show's creators/writers and what their personal feelings about current events may be.

I honestly doubt that Ron Moore knew anything about the Mujahideen when he penned that script. I suspect it's just a really amazing coincidence that the start of the series so clearly reflected our own recent history. But it's obvious that a lot of what they've done since then has been with a careful eye to history and current events.

Ahhh... so when you watch, let me know what you thought about the "Plantet of the Apes" ending for the Mid-season Finale...

***SPOILERS***

I wasn't expecting them to find Earth at all... and then to throw in the cliche "post-apocalyptic" Earth sceanario... *sigh* I'm not really sure how I feel about it.
Still, I'm anxious to see what the final episodes hold, and how the final Cylon is still relevant. No doubt there's still plenty of surprises.

Er... so ANYONE psyched for the FINAL EPISODES on January 16th??

Scifi.com has posted some webisodes, I think 9 out of 10 have been posted so far, they're not too bad. ;)

Well, I bought the first series a month or so ago and have finally gotten around to watching a bit of it. Have seen two episodes and am at the start of the third. I was a bit caught of guard when I immediately got a message of "On the last episode" when I started the first episode. Then I would find out that there was a miniseries that played out before, just a question, is it important to watch this miniseries? Does it add anything to the overall series, understanding perhaps?

Time for some bumpage action. I finished the series a few weeks ago and I've got to say that it is by far the best television series I have ever seen. The depth of the characters is amazing, as are most of the storylines. Even though it has a Sci-fi setting, it's so believable and as such, it is so easy to immerse yourself in that world. So easy to feel involved in the race to outrun the Cylons in the first season to feel the frustration and loss when they finally find Earth. I suppose that it is also largely due to the great work of Bear McCreary in constructing a great musical score for all the seasons.

I'd say that Tricia Helfer is most definitely the stand out star of the series. It's mind boggling to think that she was a model just before beginning the series. She adapted so well to whatever situation was necessary, from the cool and seductive Head Six to the empathetic Caprica Six. I liked her Gina character the most and the way she portrayed her, in fact I felt the moment when she escapes with the help of Baltar and smokes Cain to be one of the most epic.

I'd also have to commend James Callis on his great work as Baltar. It was sensational, one of the deepest characters in the series. He probably goes through the most development. From being a sociopathic and self serving tool to becoming a much more likable fellow. The moment when he decides to become a farmer on New Earth and breaks down is a great moment. It shows how he has come to terms with his past and with his future (though I suppose having the ever so attractive Caprica Six by him does help ;P)

Tigh is a character that I began to like more as things progressed. From around the beginning of the third season onwards. Previous to that he just annoyed me and I could not understand why he was kept around on Galactica. He was just an incompetent drunk, he would continually blunder, and drown himself in alcohol everytime he got upset. It shows how much his character develops as things go on. He's one who's portrayed by a great actor.

There's a lot more to say about this but I'll leave it at this for now and post more thoughts later.

Yay!
He finally did grow on you! I dunno, I liked him from the onset for some reason, even if was a drunk, I still couldn't help but feel sympathy for him. Especially when he went through that ordeal with Ellen. He killed her for his liaison with a Cylon, when he turns out to be one himself?? Only to find out she is one later! I guess he got lucky. The only thing I didn't care for regarding his story was his affair with Caprica Six. It was just WEIRD and essentially pointless because their child died anyway...

DID you ever get around to seeing the mini-series? Because that may have been why you were a bit confused getting into the actual series. It's about 4 hours long, and it shows the CYLON ATTACK on the Thirteen Colonies and how the BSG manages to escape and how Baltar survives, etc. Anyway, if you haven't seen it, I highly recommend finding it because it's a great introduction and it's just more of BSG to watch which is always a good thing.

I have to ask you, were you really that happy with the last episode? You didn't think it was a little cliche or preachy? I mean, it turned out to be just another "be careful with technology or it will turn against youuuu!!!" message which has been hundreds of times before in the Sci-Fi genre. Ah well....

With the exception of a few glimpses here and there, no I haven't. I've been meaning to though as it seems very fast paced (as it progresses) and I'd like to see what exactly happened before "33" (which was an awesome episode)

I never said I was pleased with the finale, just with the series as a whole. And yeah it is cliched, I hope things could have gone differently but I suppose that's just the fanboy in me talking. You get to a point where you like the show so much that you're bound to be disappointed with how it ends, irrespective of how that goes. Going through the series, you kinda get the vibe that technology is the ruin of man so I was kinda expecting the ending to be reflective of that. I can think of a dozen different scenarios of how it should or could have ended but in the end, I'm content with what happened. Well, with the exception of one part...

I looove the series. The finale was slightly disappointing but the rest of the series still makes up for it. One of the major things I hated at the end was

I mainly got into the series because of Lucy Lawless (I loved #3 <3). I'm a big Xena tard. I was mostly just expecting some cheesy star trek type show. I was so extremely wrong, and happy about it :D

YAY.
I agree with many of your sentiments on the last episode, Astus.

@Jorgh: TORI? I thought she was weak. I wasn't sad to see her go in the slightest. I thought her end was very fitting... everything happens for a reason in BSG. I liked that even though the consequences of her actions were not immediate, they caught up with her eventually...

One character that ended up disappointing me though was Boomer. She was my favorite when I first watched the mini-series... and her confusion and reaction to how she felt about possibly being a cylon was very sympathetic. Then she goes all crazy and abhorable, and then I ended up liking Athena instead. I thought she would redeem herself when returning Hera to the Athena & Helo, but even that turned out to be some sort of ruse, betraying even the trust of her former lover... I was just so angry with her... especially for siding with Cavil, whom I strongly dislike.
Her death was kinda lame... but guess she deserved it in the end, and what else could they have done with her?

I've honestly been missing out on quite a bit of this series. I really ought to get back to watching it again...
