This is a rather short biography of him, but hey it's good I suppose. Booker T Washing ton was a spokesperson for black people in America and was the first Black person to be the principle of teachers at a black school. Booker was born into with a white father and black mother. His mother was a black save who worked for an unknown white plantation owner. But when he was nine, he moved to West Virginia with his family to live with his stepfather who had the surname of Washington. This was the end of slavery for him. Here he worked as a salt packer and in a coal mine. Though he would eventually work as a houseboy for Viola Ruffner. Viola was a picky person and disliked most of the people who did services for her, but Booker was an exception. His attention to detalis had impressed her and she had a large liking in him. This had lead Booker to start getting an education and gain the ability to read. He would then go on to be a student at Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute. When Booker came to the age of 25, people were looking for someone to be a principle at a new school. Usually, whites were given this position but Booker was the one who got it. Through the teachings of this school, he believed that if he could get black people to prove that they were able show that they were responsible, smart people then the whites would be more tolerent in them. In an effort to inspire the "commercial, agricultural, educational, and industrial advancement" of African Americans, Washington founded the National Negro Business League (NNBL) in 1900. When Washington's autobiography, Up From Slavery, was published in 1901, it became a bestseller and had a major impact on the African American community, and its friends and allies. Washington in 1901 was the first African-American ever invited to the White House as the guest of President Theodore Roosevelt. Despite this, Washington remained as principle at his school. Washingtons health was deteriorating badly, and he collaspe in New York City where he was taken and brought back to Tuskegee where his school was at. It was here that he died. |
