I can't say I really like this movie, but I figured I'd make a topic for it. The first thing anyone will tell you about Mind Game is that it's rather awkward. Perhaps most disconcerting is that the film forgoes an intelligible plot for a more emotionally driven (but otherwise absurdly random) sequence of ridiculous events. Hell, I can’t even remember half the things that happen, but expect such oddities as transitioning from wooing a childhood friend to running from the yakuza to being swallowed by an enormous whale in a few minutes’ time. The animation style is equally strange and not the least bit bound by reality. It really embellishes the chaotic style of the plot, and it’s also really cool and distinctive. The entire experience is pretty experimental and artsy, geared more towards invoking a certain emotion than clinging to traditional cinematic structure and somewhat believable visuals. The animation makes for a really cool experience, and is in fact the only reason I watched Mind Game to start with. Unfortunately, stylish and innovative animation techniques can’t carry an entire movie, and once you get past the novelty of it all there really isn’t much left to enjoy. So I didn’t. It was really cool at first, and would’ve made for a nice short film, but the lack of plot progression and the like aren’t well suited for a full-length movie. It’s worth checking out, perhaps, if you have any interest in cool animation techniques, but I don’t expect you’ll be too compelled to watch it all the way through. |
