Well, the latest RoDL news came out, and I'm wondering, what was so great about this guy?

Posted Image: To put it simply, he essentially had Japan in the palm of his hand during his lifetime. He never became Shogun as far as I know, but he might as well have been.

However, after his death, the Taira were defeated by the Minamoto, which eventually founded Japan's first Shogunate. The Minamoto defeated the Taira because they had HONOR...or at least Minamoto Yoshitsune did.

That treacherous viper, Oda Nobunaga also claims descent from the Taira...I...think...

Hmm.. I'm guessing he was pretty treacherous huh, or why else would he be joining the evil side in RoDL?

Did he have a reputation for being an evil or at least disliked person?

I heard the same. That while Oda claims decent from the Taira clan, Akechi claimed decent from the Minamoto. Ironic ain't it. ;)

Many clans claimed descent from the Minamoto. I believe the Tokugawa did, for instance, as well.

About Kiyomori, he was one guy whose power went to his head. The Taira was not a family of nobles: it acquired its prestige because Kiyomori's father, but especially Kiyomori himself, served the Emperor well: in fact Kiyomori was -not-so-directly- responsible for the squashing of the Heiji and Hogen rebellions. The Taira was then an upstart family: and Kiyomori used all of his influence to rise even higher in the court, and fill the court's position with members of his family. This, of course, lead to a tyranny.

There would be far too many examples to list (and, of course, I don't remember but a few of them) but he was portrayed as a cruel leader with occasional bouts of kindness (especially when his son, Shigemori, was still alive to restrain him)

Bottom line, it was chiefly his abuse of power that led Japan to, arguably, its darkest age. (In my opinion, half of the blame should go to those pesky Mt. Hiei monks, but alas)

Oh yeah, all I know was gathered from the Tale of Heike. I don't claim 100% historical accuracy (which is not easy at all, considering the time period), but the version i read contained plenty notes that rectified or expounded the book's points, based on real sources.

Kiyomori's greatest fault is that he only banished Minamoto no Yoritomo without killed him. :hmmm:
