If you had read any of the other posts in this topic, mainly those by zacattack, you might actually realise that it isnt really all about death, just to avoid problems...although thats the impression that people get too easily with a topic such as this. Although I do agree about the tight jeans...I just dont get it...to me they would be just absolutely painful to wear

Agreed. But a lot of us need to avoid our problems once in awile when they overwhelm us. Which is why you get drunk or take a nap or do exercise or read or see a movie to get away - just anything but damaging your body. Sick nasty digusting freaks. |

I just have to point this out, you say getting drunk is a better solution than deliberatly damaging your bodies.... isn't that what alcohol does??? The whole tight jeans thing, its more fashion than anything else really. |

There's a very big difference when it comes to slitting your wrists and getting drunk. When you cut your body with a knife or a sharp object on purpose that is self infliction/bodily harm. When you are consuming excessive beer or liquor that is alcohol abuse. On terms of what is better, well getting drunk is a much better alternative to practically destroying your body and attempting to end one's own life. You can easily die from cutting your arteries and veins because of the loss of blood. Drinking alcohol can't harm you too much unless you consume a lot of it, but your body will try to fight it and will make you throw up so it causes less damage to your body. You can argue that being drunk can make you do stupid things like kill yourself, but I don't see that happening too often. Usually those things are caused by accident and by doing stupid stuff. |

Alright, time for my input. Ok, first things to know about me, I'm not emo, never have been. But I have contemplated suicide, attempted it three times but I would describe myself as mainly past that stage in my life now. Ok, so first I know it has already been answered to but I would agree that suicide is by no means the "easy way out." Like I said, I tried it on more than one occasion if you SERIOUSLY want to end it all, you have to spend a good amount of time talking yourself into it and building up courage to start it, even then it's easy to chicken out half way. (Like I did.) It really makes me laugh, pretty much 99% of people I know in real life who believe suicide is the easy way out are all people who get every luxury under the sun handed to them on a goddamn golden plate, people who have never been hurt and even if something happened to them, it wouldn't matter because they've still got everything else good going for them. Ok, so I'm beginning to rant. Basically the point I'm trying to make is that of course it can sometimes be a cry for attention, but so can a lot of things. There are some people out there who really ARE hurt or upset. Like someone else mentioned there can come a point when words aren't really enough to express your feelings, I've been there myself I found it VERY hard to talk to people about any of my problems. Now, obviously not ALL emos have had the same experiences as I have, as a matter of fact probably only a few of them have. As for other things in the emo culture, like their dress style and choice of music is all fine to me, and I don't see anything wrong with it... But that's not what this topic is about, no? |

I don't really agree with the whole "if you're emo go kill yourself" thing, but I do not like these kinds of weirdos that much. More people though are starting to become scene instead because they do not want to have anything to do with cutting or be attacked on a daily basis by emo-haters. Not all emos are cutters, but I think that the ones that are have some serious issues. The emo guys are what really annoy me. Being emo for a guy is just an excuse to act like girls. |

Emo is the stupidest genre ever(I dont hate it, I hate that its called that) this music used to be called Punk, but now that some of these bands might dress closely to emo, I now all their music is classified as that. Like My Chemical Romance, All American Rejects, Taking Back Sunday. Not all their music is depressing, all groups and singers have their sad songs, doesnt mean that that particular song should be classified as emo? No. Its just stupid, get rid of the idea that emo is a type of music. Its Punk, its Alternative, its ROCK N ROLL biatches. Sorry, I guess thats off topic. As for emo people, ya, i think they are weird and the guys just dress like girls. |

I classify myself as an emo. I am a very emotional individual, and like most emos find 'alternative' ways of releasing negative or depressing feelings. But being emo doesnt mean that you go around slitting your wrists all the time or suiciding because life gets too much. Wrist slitting is done by 'self harmers', people who self harm are in no way to be suddenly associated with 'emos', there are alot of types of people out there and it isnt just the odd emo or two that cuts themselves. I dont know if anyone has pointed it out yet but the word 'emo' is literally a shortened version of the word 'emotional'. Being an emotional person isnt a bad thing, and you cant just go around acting like all emo people are suicidle and depressed. I HATE those people who try to claim they are 'emo' because they put a razor to their wrists and slit, i know so many asses that say it, it makes me so ****ed off. As i said i am an emo, emotional person and now i am having to call myself a 'greebo' because i am so ashamed of what idiots have made 'emo' mean... *sighs* EDIT: I dont think its fair to judge the way people chose to dress, it's like me saying that some one is wierd because they always wear track suites or whatever, its discrimination on a persons taste to call them 'weird' because they chose to dress a certain way. this was all called "Gothic" and "New Wave" in the 80's, so it's nothing new. 80's "Goth's/New Wavers" idolized the dark and emotional as well, they just rarely damaged themselves over it, they were social reformers, not spoiled social rejects. |

Actually Goths still exist, and I dont see them as emos. If I were to classify an emo and a goth, they dress differently with some similarites. Goths usually dress in full black, and where odd clothing that I havent even seen before in other colors. https://www.andymillar.co.uk/gallery/blog-2008/GothRP2201_468x665.jpg (WTF with that pic she is like his slave or dog)Emos often were very skinny jeans, or as you would call them if a guy were wearing them, as girl pants. Most Goths ive known in the past, usually dress in really baggy pants. This isnt true for all, but many Goths practice in weird rituals and do other odd stuff. While I havent known any emos to do that stuff. Emo is usually just associated with the dress and depressed feelings. |

the Ice Queen of Goth from the 80's: http://www.vamp.org/Siouxsie/ still around and still pretty relevant in her 50's. yeah, she did favor black alot, but there was an element of glamour to Siouxsie and her legions of followers that i just don't see these days. Goths seem to go for the whole(like you showed) bondage gear thing, and Emos just always look like they need a bath to me. |

Shadow said most of what I would've said. I am really emotional in sort of a way that I'd consider myself an emo. I've thought about killing myself more than I can remember and have gotten closer to it then I should have, but I don't do any self-mutilation stuff. That's an entirely different thing. Like plenty of people have said, cutting doesn't define emo. But we all have our moments when we're depressed and we don't like ourselves or how our lives are going so I don't see a point in being annoying with emos. Doesn't matter about people who hurt themselves either. Sure that definetely isn't good but you shouldn't automatically judge them for it. They might not know any other way to cope or just need someone there for them. I've had to convince plenty of my friends out of cutting and suicide and someone of them are the happiest people I know. I don't see a point in being annoying with the style either. People can wear what they want to wear, you know? So I'd never wear skinny jeans doesn't mean I hate people who wear them. So yeah, that's really all I have to say. I just hate how people stereotype and hate emos.

Ahm...just let them do what they want? And...well...let them be what they want? Everyone is open to homosexuals and other religions, but you are stingy about those ones? I know someone who is homosexual and he was discriminated a long time. But he does the same to emos. I donīt get it. He knows how this is, how you feel, when youīre made fun off and complains about it....and is stupid enough to do it himself? Everytime I hear people using "Everyone is different, as long as they hurt no one else, they should do what they want"...why not this time? Look around, those are all teenagers. Itīs a phase in their life, some become moth******** cewl gangsters, some punks, goths, nerds etc... In school there is a certain "grouping" and you will eventually become one of a certain group. Even "normal people" is a group. Once they get older they cut the crap out and become an adult and life the boring life as everyone else. Of course, even adults have those certain grouping effect on them, but I havenīt seen a 30 year old men running around like a "cut me Elmo". If you want to help them, talk to them. If you donīt, just leave them alone. You all have more mistakes than I can count, donīt search for faults in others, we all have enough withing ourselves. Why canīt people just stop discriminating others and hating others. You know, thatīs how war happens? This is how sorrow and death is brought to this fine human world. Cause people just canīt stop hating. Money, body, health, opinion, color, believing, hobbies, past, future, family...there are some many ways how people hate, what people hate...but they will never stop. Most of the time, humans donīt even know why they it. They just hate. Because they were taught to hate, just because they want to hate, but most of the time because they are afraid. sigh. Now I understand why they cut themselves I know, I wonīt convince anyone, but just...just stop hating. Itīs useless. Listen to old pal Yoda: "Fear is the path to the dark side: fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering." Donīt be afraid of other things, of other beings. Just learn to understand them or at least try to figure about their cultur, just before you say "they are weird" and start hating them. |

- Being "emo" I have nothing against, in my opinion, humans should be able to be what they want to be. If they want to have hair brushed over their face and wear tight jeans, sure, it's great if they enjoy their life being as they want to be ! - Hurting yourself in any condition, cutting, suiciding included, I do not approve with (( Actually, suiciding I understand in certain limitations like if you would be hit with a bunch of arrows and you would only suffer for a prolonged time and die otherwise )). And that is totally unrelated fact for "being emo" . As mention, being emo does not mean you are cutting your wrists and slapping yourself to face. That's a stereotype much like how everyone wearing black would be depressed and emotional. A worthy note, sorry if already mentioned in the topic (( Didn't read all 10 pages) , did you know Russia has been throwing in suggestion that emo would be made illegal ? They describe it as "dangerous teen trend" and thus want to push it off the existence. More of this : http://www.nme.com/news/my-chemical-romance/38392 |

Bah, I'm depressed, but I'm not stupid. Life is hard, especially for people who have had rough lives and suffered trauma like myself. But boo-freakin'-hoo, most emo punks that I know are whiny mama's boys who have lived a priveleged and problem free life and are like whaa-whaa. That's why I did my part in high school and roughed 'em up a little bit, it builds character so I'm doing them a service. If kids like that actually had to live in the real world they wouldn't survive. |

Me and my friends are emos, we wear skinny jeans, have emo fringes and listen to punk and rock music, its what we do and enjoy, its what makes us who we are. We dont slit our wrists or tell people how **** our lives are. Infact we are quite happy with out loves, happy people, we just get emotional at times about things, i mean everyone has problems and everyone has ways of dealing with them. I myself get emotional quite alot, i am that kind of person. As i probably said before, yes people do self harm, but those people can be anybody, some of those people go round dressed in bright clothing, you cant catagorise self harmers as 'emos'. I see people in this thread trying to say that emos are whinning mommys boys are whatever, well i disagree. Though i dont see any fault in being a mommys boy. It upsets me that so many people can discriminate us emos for being the way we chose to be, we dont go around discriminating other groups of people, i dont even know where half you people got these stereo types, but i am disgusted. |

I stereotype Emo's to be the wrist-slitting type of people that most people believe, it's not really hurting anyone saying that (unless emo people live up to there stereotype...). I don't really listen to emo music so I can't judge there, but they dress in such dull and depressing clothes, and whats with the emo fringe? I think emo people will always be a mystery to me
