Dynasty Warriors 6 Review I finally got my copy of the latest installment of Dynasty Warriors, Dynasty Warriors 6 on Wednesday. I have played it a good amount of time and I shall now give my review of the game. Gameplay Well I must say that I was deeply impressed by this game in comparison to the others. Like the other installments of Dynasty Warriors, you will find yourself continuously hitting a single button throughout each level. Sounds simple, and it is, but we all know that it never will get old and we shall all continue to love it. But the biggest improvement from this is that you are no longer limited to a number of attack chains. Having unlimited attacks is nice. The renbu system, put simply, is awesome. Getting all those chains in order to increase the amount of "rounds of attacks" is quite enjoyable and something that I personally believe is something Koei should stick with. The biggest disappointment of all of this is the limits of charge attacks (now known as power attacks) and the musou attacks. In previous Dynasty Warriors games, after every attack, they were all different. In 6, it is all the same. And most of the warriors' power attacks all similarly juggle your enemies. As for the musou attacks, it is the same as the character's normal attacks, just powered up, and ending with a special ending. My only thought is that Koei could be running out of ideas. Now for "new yet not so new" attacks: the grapples. No more counters, you guard and hit the normal attack button for a weaker grapple attack and the power attack button for a more powerful grapple attack. It's pretty neat and I for one am glad that the grapple attacks made a return to the Dynasty Warriors series. Oh, and sadly you will still run into slow downs every now and then. Level design...well...it is great. Maps are all so big and the battles all seem so epic (Guan Du being one of my new favorites. You really get the feeling that you are being overwhelmed by Yuan Shao's forces). And there is always something going on. And now Koei added optional objectives called targets in the game for more experience and challenge within each level. And believe me, successfully completing each target can be very challenging. Speaking of challenges, the term "one-man army" is hardly appropriate for your character. If you go out too far, you will die. All officers have lieutenants with them (remember them from DW4 Empires?) and they can all be a huge challenge if by yourself. Taking bases is a decent setup as well. Firstly you'll have to destroy the bases gate if necessary. After entering the base, you'll see the name of the base and a number below it appear on top of the screen. Usually the number is above 100 and after dropping the number to 0, you successfully take the base. Now, to lower the number, you can do any of the following: - For each soldier you kill, the number drops by 1 - For each Corporal you kill, the number drops by 10 - By defeating the Guard Captain, you instantly take the base There may or may not be some more effective ways of taking bases in this type of game, but it is most definitely a step above the previous Dynasty Warriors games. More into level design, I must say the new siege battles are FUN. Koei did an excellent job in designing real-time siege warfare battles and you'll find yourselves defending your siege weapons from enemy defense captains jumping down from the walls and/or climbing siege ladders to eliminate ballistas from atop the wall. Next I'll be talking about the AI. You may be asking yourself "did he just do that?" Enemies are much more intelligent. Officers will effectively use the new roll-dodge ability to avoid your attacks and they all work well with their soldiers to try and take you down. And soldiers are also much more intelligent. They work together with one another as well, sometimes using combined attacks that will instantly break your combo chain, and they do this often. From my personal experience, your allied officers aren't still as effective as they should be, but they seem stronger than in previous Dynasty Warriors games. With a complete new system, you won't be killing an enemy officer and picking up those "Attack +6" items anymore. No, instead there is a system similar to Samurai Warriors and Warriors Orochi. Officers now drop EXP points. You level up after gaining a certain amount of EXP points, yeah you should all know how it works. Now you can increase your stats even further by the skill tree. You add points you gain in battle to you skill tree in the result screen. Not only do you gain stat boosts but abilities too, such as gaining an extra renbu book or increasing swimming speed, etc. The skill tree is different for each character. The last thing I will cover in the gameplay section is weapons and horses. No there aren't any leveling up weapons like in Dynasty Warriors 4. I find the weapon system similar to Dynasty Warriors 5. You find weapons in a much similar way. But this time around, each character only gets 3 types of weapons. One for strength, one balanced, and one for skill. Think of it as in Dynasty Warriors 5. Strength weapons are like heavy weapons, balanced weapons are the medium weight weapons, and skill weapons are the light weapons. - Strength weapons- slower attack speed, concentrating on power - Balanced weapons- the default attack speed and default power - Skill weapons- faster attack speed, less power Now for horses. You find saddles like in all other Dynasty Warriors games. This time around, however, you level up a horse with the max level being 5. And there are many types of horses, each leveling up a different way. Horses also have skills now and an elemental attribute. I don't have much to say on the weapon/horse system. It is definitely a for better or for worse situation and may be appealing to others and may repulse others. Graphics Next up is the graphics. The graphics are deeply disappointing. Dynasty Warriors 6 is a next-gen game, but the graphics barely deserve to be called a "next-gen" game. However, I must say that some of the lighting was well done. However, it was not what I was expecting and needs a big improvement. Story It's the same as the old ones. Takes place in Ancient China and is based of The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Unfortunately, the game makes it hard for players who are unfamiliar to the story to understand what is going on, with vague descriptions of what is going on before each battle scene in Musou Mode. The Encyclopedia may enlighten players, but players buy games to play, not to read page after page of the story. Sound Koei never seems to disappoint in the music. Its still the hard rockin' songs we all love, but with a likeable Chinese twist to many songs, such as Welcome to China. Not one of the best soundtracks in terms of Dynasty Warriors games, but a good one nonetheless. Ready for the bad part? Voice-acting. It's still bad. An improvement, yes, but bad nonetheless. It sounds like much of the voices are simply being read off of their cue cards. That's it. They don't seem to fit in with some of the scenes we see in the game. Conclusion Dynasty Warriors 6 is a good game that fans of the series will enjoy. I for one say its best in the series, but like the other ones it still has many flaws. Ratings -Gameplay: 9/10 *Endless attack strings, epic battles, excellent replay value, one of the best if not the best Dynasty Warriors gameplay* Graphics: 4.5/10 *It's a next-gen game and I thus want it to look like one. Sadly, it does not.* Story: 6/10 *Before you go basing on me, it is a great story. I'm grading this based on the way the game presents it. Koei leaves much of the story out in the gameplay and it can confuse some of players that are not familiar with it* Music/Sound: 7/10 *The music is good as always, and the voice acting is not so good as always. I'd say it is an improvement, but still bad.* Overall: 7/10 *Ok Koei, you improved some of the gameplay elements, now its time to improve on some of the major issues of the game.* |

Great evaluation of the gameplay section, for me that's the biggest element in the Warriors games and it's nice to see it well covered here. I do find it a shame that you and others I've read speaking of the poor graphics and downtime throughout the game, it's so hard to believe for a game made exclusively for a next gen system. Although, that aside it sounds excellent, I'm also glad you didn't harp on the loss of a few characters and stages, because frankly I'm sick of those complaints, particularly considering this game is pretty much completely remade. Excellent review, and certainly keeps me interested in trying the game out. I ask one thing though; how about add a replay value section? I've read a few already say it's not as strong as it used to be for a DW game, I'd like to read your thoughts on that as well. |

I'm glad to hear this. I've been hearing good thoughts about the stage designs and interactions, so thats a positive move foward! Remember that it's quite often known now as a DW2 remake, so now we should pray for another remarkable DW3 remake in the next stage. That dodge-roll comment you made; I expect its the automatic roll that the officers will do when their back is turned? We're familiar with this. Thanks for your review since it's a positive review. We haven't been too use to these type of reviews from Dynasty Warriors 6 lately. |

Nice review. I really disagree about the graphic thing though. - I've seen so many people whine about the graphics lately (not saying you were whining though) it's making me sick. The graphics aren't as good as some games. But saying they're "barely next gen" Or "almost PS2-like" Is such a bunch of rubbish. |
