Background Storyline: Bladestorm, is the first in the new line of games by KOEI based around the long scale war between the French and the English, around the 14th century. The game gives you the opportunity to play as a mercenary, and play through the story, meeting the actual people, with real battles and situations. Gameplay Using the mercenary, customised to personal preference, you choose one from a selection of contracts, offered by the barkeep. These contracts take you all over to the historic regions of France, including Normandy, Champagne and Brittany, where fierce battles continually take place throughout the entire course of the game. The style of fighting is different to the usual hack-and-slash game offered by KOEI games, but has got a more strategic feel to it. With the ability to use and control various typed of units, like swords, spears horses, and many more, more exotic and rare unit types, it gives you the chance to find a specific unit that would suit your style of attack, or defence. The battle ground is littered with bases of different strength, all based on historical locations, like Domremy, the home village of Joan of Arc, and the place of her demise, Rouen. These bases may be the subject of the contract, or may be an important strategic position, but taking them requires you to deplete all of the base points, and defeating the base commander, using your mercenary, and your unit, thats if you chose to control a unit. This routine is repeated for all other bases and contracts, occasionally being able to participate in a historically significant battle, like the battle at Crecy, or Orleans. This style of play can be exciting and refreshing at first, and untill you unlock all units, but can eventually get overly repetative, as well as the missions, so that would take my scoring down to 8/10 Graphics The graphics are great, really give you a feel to what everything looked like in that period in time. The cutscenes are very well done, with the characters and surroundings looking very clear and precise, but the overall look of the game could be better, especially for the now generation of gaming. 8/10 Difficulty The game has a balance of difficulties, depending on the star level of the particular contract, with easiest having one star, but gradually getting higher over the course of the game, untill it reaches 14 star, which is very late in the game. This is good for the when you get the new books, and need some way of training them without getting defeated. Also, how difficult the game iscan depend on the units you are using, and who your versing, so there is many different ways to make the game easier or harder. 9/10 Sound The sounds throughout the battling is nice, and so are the voices, but some of the characters accents can get quite annoying. The music is brillient and suits the period well, and works as a nice background sound for the game. (even if it does sound like its from halo) 7/10 Summery A great game with great replay value, sound, characters, storyline, and graphics. Its also a nice alternatie from the usual hack-n-slash Dynasty and Samurai warriors games were used to getting from Koei. The games side-stories will keep you playing the game for at least 100 hours+. But if you ever get bored of your first sotry, you can always start again, with a completely new character, and play through the story in a completely different way. With the scores of the gameplay, graphics, difficulty and sound added together, this gives this game an overall rating of: 8/10 (ok, now that im done, can someone please edit the topic title, and get rid of the 'in progress' and put the score there instead, thanks to whoever does this) |

Nice review to the straight to the point GLPs, I'm definitely interested in getting this when I have a next gen system. The gameplay in particular sounds like something I will really enjoy; a little more strategy to the battles is what I always prefer in other KOEI games, such as Kessen & Warriors Empires titles. Just one small thing, I'd recommend typing reviews in Word or something similar to help find any typos and have a backup copy of it.
