Title: Crickets

Chapter: 1/1

Done by: Nutella

Warnings: slight slash: SC+ZY.

Notes: Xiao mei little sister (or in this case, Xiao Qiao)

The crickets were loud. Very loud. On nights like this I like to stay up with the small candle light reading some of the scrolls in my collection. But not that night, though. That night, I felt like taking a walk in the wonderful gardens of my new home. Just to dispel some of the headache I felt. Maybe I shouldn’t have. Really.

It had rained that day. A heavy rain that receded into a light mist that hung mysteriously amongst the many plants that grew in the garden. The night sky was pitch black still, the clouds heavy with the promise of more rain. The weak waning moonlight barely shone through the clouds, giving little light to the dark gardens.

I loved the garden. The little sculpture of the turtle that had captured Xiao mei’s attention the first day she arrived, the sweet smell of lotus, frangipani blossoms and even the charming little stream that flowed through the garden. The light tinkling sounds of the stream over the loud chirping of the crickets calmed me down, slightly. But the crickets were still giving me a slight headache.

The strange yet familiar smells filled my senses, relaxing me after the long day. All of which I’d have smelt and seen in the daylight. An overpowering smell caught my attention though, Jasmine. It blooms only at night when it releases its sweet delicious scent. I headed towards it, intent to see the small white flowers and maybe pick a few of them for the vase in the room.

It was probably the sudden dip in the noise level of the crickets or the fact that their whispers had increased in volume. The pain of my headache lessened but not the pain in my heart when I heard them. The small conversation that will forever stay in my heart, a a constant reminder of me being there.

“It’s tomorrow…” A deep voice said.

“Un.” The other answered just as silently, agreeing, as if in acceptance. I wondered why.

“What will…” The question was asked, but I couldn’t hear it above the loud ring of the crickets. May be it wasn’t said, a silent question that might never be asked verbally.

“… stop. They’ll never …”

Either it was stupidity or curiosity, I had leaned some more into the shrubbery to see who they were and at least, know what they were talking about. What surprised me more was what I saw. Almost equally tall, both were wearing the robes of the palace. Even in this weak light, I could see their features. Long hair hung from his shoulders, his arms wrapped possessively, yet tenderly around the other’s waist. The other’s arms wrapped around Long Hair’s neck. I felt a slight choke in my throat.

There was this sudden silence when he spoke, “I don’t care what they think, Gong Jin. But know this, no matter what happens, I love you.”

“Ce, I…” Zhou Yu’s words were drowned by the crickets again. But I didn’t need to hear the words. The choke rose to a sob. I felt tears run down my cheeks as I watched them kiss, their last for maybe a very long time.

“Sun Ce, Zhou Yu… I’m so sorry…” I sobbed softly as I turned and left.
