Because I'm always slow to the uptake, I just bought DW4:XL.
Short version of my reaction? I remembered why this is my favourite version of the game. The characterization in the Legend Modes (especially for the women) is a bazillion times more likable than the DW5 work.

Aaarrggghhh. DW4:XL is the only game past DW3 that I don't own. Looks like I have something to search for, then. Did you already talk about Yue Ying's legend battle elsewhere? I remember that you were impressed with it, but I can't find the post. I'd love to hear your thoughts on what it brings to her character. And HOORAY for well thought out female characterization in general. I've been lazy about posting in the role of women topic, but I do follow along from time to time.

Is DW4:XL really THAT good? I only have DW4, and I loved it, obviously from my little rave above your post. I've been thinking of investing in it, but wasn't sure.

Sure. It has many fun stages in the Legend's to sap your time and have enjoyment out of it. Also the first chance people had to try the Xtreme Mode. Not forgetting more items and level 11 weapons.

That's right, it has Legend stages for every character, right? That's worth getting it alone. I guess next time I head to GameStop, I'll have to get that. Level 11 weapons sounds awesome, as well. Thanks.
I am currently under leave of absence from the site. I have become tangled up with work and have turned my attention away from the site, as I have unfortunately lost interest and do not have the time to dedicate to it. If you wish to contact me, click on my username to find my MSN and AOL contacts, and I am also on Facebook, as well. Don't worry, I'm not gone forever, and I'll try to be on from time to time when I find the time, and once I regain interest and find more time on my hands, I'll be back. Thank you all for understanding, and see you around.

Its def worth the purchase bud. And truth be told, its really the only way to max out those last few pesky items you dont have to level 20 yet. Its a bit more friendly in the items it gives. Plus, the level 11 weapons are hard to get in certain cases, but worth getting to enhance the experience.

Its just Yue Ying testing her juggernauts against the Shu officers, IIRC. The Five Tigers and Zhuge Liang, I think.

@MegaXtreme: Like GoW said, the level 11 weapons can be quite a task. ;)

The unlocking methods are different, so no, sorry. They are there for those that only buy the expansion and not the main title or for those who probably wish to do them another way. Mind you the 10ths are not nearly as dull and uncreative as getting the 4ths in DW5XL simply because they are mainly time limits.

(Maybe off-topic)

I really did not want to make a topic on this, but I was wondering if anyone could help me out.

There is some sort of thick guide book or art book for DW4 on ebay > > LINK

I was wondering if anyone knows what type of book that is?

Well, I have the Data Book and that is not the cover for what I have. I'm not so sure what that is... Guide Book part 2? No idea. Sorry. :( We can be sure it's an official book... so it's either Guide or Art. Since it says Guide book, it's probably a Strategy Guide? The books with random tidbits and stuf are Data Books.

I'm guessing I'm 1 of less than 5 people on this forum that bought this game for the X-Box instead of PS2.

For all of us X-Box DW4ers, I have a question. Have any of you noticed that microsoft didn't do a great job making DW4 backwards compatible? I'm currently trying to re-beat it for my 360, and there are a bunch of problems. There are random lines on the screen during the Preparations menu, the sound cuts in and out during gameplay and in the options menu, The screen during the cutscenes sometimes isn't centered good enough so you see white lines on the top of the screen, & the bodyguard list sometimes doesn't even show up. It's ridiculous. It's still fun though.

Oh.... sorry. I would help you out - I bought it for X-Box - but I don't have a 360. Sorry. :( That being said... it's not surprising Microsoft didn't really try with this series.

nah its not that, its how emulation works. Its quite confusing to get workin, and from the sounds of what you described, thats actually quite good compared to other BC games. Not perfect, but good enough to be playable. *points to Mercenaries and Marvel VS Capcom 2*

Second Koei game I ever played. I liked the weapon level up system and plus musou was available to all characters.

I liked the way Dynasty Warriors 4 was designed. It was my first Dynasty Warriors game I played. But the challenging part is some officers are smart. And the you can't attack somewhere else.
My thoughts are pointing to such a violent world.

My favorite out of all the DW4 games is the Empires. It was the first and more refreshing than DW5 and SW2 Empires. It also had 5 new stages compared to DW5's 1 new stages and SW2 Empires had no new stages.

It also fixed the annoying lock-on system.

I wasn't completely impress with Dynasty Warriors 4 due to it's Kingdom musou mode it had. I had lost complete interest with leveling characters after doing the same story over and over again.

Xtreme Legends I liked but I had issues with loading up level 10 weapon data from my Dynasty Warriors 4 file for Sun Quan which had caused me to delete the file for my 2 level 11 weapons I had already gotten. I had to start all over. After that, I haven't bother to play it since.

Empires was probably my favorite since I enjoyed the gameplay and the shortness of the battles since Dynasty Warriors 4 tends to have long, fought out battles that never end.

I don't think Dynasty Warriors 4 is the worse but I don't think it's the best either from my experience. I am just glad the stuff I didn't care in this game, they fixed in 5.

Although some people like DW4 I don't. The graphics are not as good as DW3 or DW5 and the OST is very annoying. The only good thing Koei did about this game was the combat system which was amazing. I got impressed by general skills in expert difficulty level. :OMG:

I don't know if I should ask this here, plus the fact that I don't quite remember, but was the officer death system available in Dw4 Empires?

I bought "Dynasty Warriors 4: Empires" today. It was only €4,95! The PS2-version, by the way. However, I don't see myself playing it for a while, seeing as how I'm still completing "Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires".

My first extensively played DW game was actually DW5XL (yeah...I started on an XL game >_< ). By the time I purchases DW4, my PS2 couldn't even play it (it's just so old and so used that many games it just flat out will not boot up, like MGS 3 special version). I recently got another PS2 from a friend for a steal and discovered this one is in much better shape and will actually play DW4, so I've been playing it finally.

Despite how foggy the battlegrounds are, I like them and I like all the events that happen in them. For example, at Shi Sui Gate (might have name slightly wrong), the commander (I think it's Sun Jian) asks if anyone can defeat this one officer. I skipped the duel (had just woken up and am a little intimidated by duels, because of how much I dislike the DW6 ones) and took on the officer and beat him. Then I got another cutscene where the messenger goes up to Sun Jian and tells him about the defeat, he asks who did it, and then it showed my character saying he did (in this case, I was using Xiahou Dun, because if I can't play as Sima Yi, I'll play as him until I do get Yi). I thought that was really neat and from what I've heard, it seems like this is somewhat common in the game, so I'm looking forward to more fun stuff like that.

The Nanman campaign sounds like it is a mixed bag of goods. I liked the music in the DW5 Nanman stuff, though.

Overall, I am enjoying the game (will be playing it after I post this, heh). I did notice the lack of turning when in a combo, but so far, I've managed to make due despite that. Otherwise, no problems to be had so far. Hope to have a lot of fun with this game (and if I really do like it, I might start keeping an eye out for the XL version, though I'm so broke right now I can't afford any game unless it's free :( just had to pay for a doctor's visit and I only was able to half afford that and then I have a trip coming up, so I'll just stick to the games I have for now...I also have DW2 or 3 around here as well to mess with).

Edit: are you even supposed to be able to beat Lu Bu on Xia Pei? I got everyone down but him, but just couldn't beat him. Extremely frustrating to spend around 30 minutes trying to do this level, only to die in the end because of a stupid weapon lock. To say I'm frustrated right now is probably an understatement >_<

Edit 2: I skipped Xia Pei, but I've read that if you take out all of his generals but er...I forgot her name...Diao Chao I think...anyway, if you take everyone out but him and her, that he will retreat...is that true or just internet bullhockey? Thanks :)

SmitanSaxon, thanks. I didn't know if he was manageable even without killing her (at first I actually wondered if there was some sort of trick to defeating him, hehe). I'll give it a try again later (well, provided it's still listed since I skipped it for the battle right under it that isn't Guan Du...Fan Castle I think).

if you can kill him at hu lao gate you should definitely be able to kill him at xia pi. also i don't think he retreats since historically he dies there
