Well we've all heard the stereotype of people with tattoos/piercings. Lower class, lower eductated, less "class" and more "trash", etc.

What do you all think of this? I'm curious, because I recently saw some people with tattoos and some facial piercings (who might I add are college educated and have degrees) get "dissed" on by some people (especially the older generations). They obviously don't fit the mold that we would think of off hand about people with that type of look. The situation got me upset a bit, simply because I knew the people that were getting badmouthed.

I myself have two tattoos (on my hips) and 4 piercings (2 in my left ear, my navel and a Monroe), and I'm currently in college working towards my degree. My friends even consider me as one of the more "classy" people (since I always try to dress presentable, look nice, considered pretty intelligent, use manners, etc). As a matter of fact, the majority of people I know (and I know quite a few) have at least one tattoo and some type of off hand piercing (by this I mean aside from your ears), and come from all different backgrounds and such. Obviously this is my generation that I'm speaking of, but older generations view tattoos/piercings/etc as somewhat "taboo" in discussion and acceptance.

Discuss your opinion.

Well for me I am not really a fan of them and because I think everyone in my household would probably kill me if I got one too. Older generations look down upon people with tattoos. The only people that I see nowadays who respect people with tattoos are teenagers, people who actually have tattoos, and gang members and prisoners. Back then I guess the only people who got tattoos were prisoners and people that had that sort of thing included into their culture. Some cemeteries won't even take your body if you have tattoos.

Some reasons why I dislike tattoos are that it is mostly used nowadays to gain recognition and used to impress others. Also it just ruins people's body's which are already beautiful and don't need ink to make them look better. Although if you have someone that loves you and doesn't really care about those things and you find enjoyment for having them, then more power to you. They are just not for me. As for piercings, I'm not too sure. I don't really like the ones on people's noses because it looks kind of trashy to me. Overall, piercings freak me out. Holes in the skin and all. Posted Image

i dont have anything against piercing and tats, but i dont have any(parents would kill me). Some tattoos are ok, if they have some sort of altenate motive for getting it, like commemorating something, a sign of love, friendship, etc, but if its just an ugly tattoo with no meaning...thats trashy.

I dont really like piercing for the same reason Jsun said, i find them quite intimidating...and hard to look at at times...

While I'm fine with tattoos, i'm adverse to piercing. While both are a novelty at parties and what not, I don't like their permanency. Especially with tattoos. I'd be bored having the same thing at the same place bla bla bla. I'd rather get the henna one and do another one at the same place if I wanna. I can even erase it if I don't like it. Vigorous rubbing banzai!

Its also harder to find work if you're inked or pierced. I've seen employers turn away people just because of that. Hard to change the mindset of these people.

I'd like to know how would a tattoo look like when you're old...

I like tattooes and piercings, I have two piercings and I have two tattoo designs that I plan on getting sometime soon. I think that nowadays employers don't really care if you have tattooes considering they are usually covered at work with a suit or something.

Nice discussion thus far. ^_^

Yes I could definitely see why tattoos are very "stressing" to think about, since you're going to have the mark for the rest of your life. Piercings are a bit easier since you can remove them, but with tattoos, it's an "all or nothing" kind of deal. This is partially why I got my tats on my hips, simply because they are easy to hide if need be with pants/shorts for jobs and whatnot.

Since my Monroe is my only visible piercing (upper lip), I can take that out if the need arises, so that's not really a problem.

I have always wondered why some people want full body type tattoos (unless you're a tattoo artist or something of that nature, then I understand why).

On a side note and to share a bit of a funny story, I know the tattoo artist that did my tats(and he's a friend of mine) said that he originally thought I couldn't handle the pain, and yet I had no problems at all. That'll teach them to underestimate a homo (since people generally think homos are too "girly" when it comes to pain). :P

Just FYI, a tattoo feels like you have a sunburn and someone is scraching/picking at it. I know someone will ask what it feels like eventually. :P

Hmm... what if it cannot be covered. I think that's the main concern for the employers. Also they think its more of a liability since they won't know when the people who associated with the person might cause trouble, kinda like a 3rd degree kinda thing. Just to preserve the reputation of the company, they won't hire the person.

On a semi-related note. I say this is freaky. Woman has 5900 plus piercings

Well since I'm here, I have to say, I got ear piercings(as a girl I guess it's normal), but I won't get any other piercings or tattoos! Also, I dislike tattoos. I mean, they're gonna sag with your skin when you grow old anyway. :/

Jsun, you know as well as I do that your family would kill you because you are teh joo like me. Older jews don't like tattoos because they see them as being akin to the barcodes that were slapped onto them during the Holocaust.

For me it's the opposite. I think tattoos are cool, but I hate piercings. I do not understand what is fashionable about mutilating yourself, and I hate jewelry, earrings and all that other materialistic garbage. Yes, to me all of that is materialistic garbage.

I personally like tattos myself, but I've been too big on piercings. To be honest, I really don't have any more to say then just that.

I don't really like piercings, seeing as how they could get infected. I may get tatoos but I'd rather not seeing as once you have one, you're pretty much stuck with one for the rest of your life.

the form is fine...

but the content:

seriously, if you going to get a tattoo in foreign symbols or letters, really make sure you do the research into what it means or could mean. Its diffcult for me to keep a straight face when a peer shows off a chinese character they obviously has no knowledge of or its context...

Stick to things you understand, thats my advice, not some obscure hindu symbol that you think means peace and love but in fact is just a really puzzling way of drawing a vagina.

Agreed. Agreed. And agreed with some more.

I cannot tell you how many "scene/emo/whatever" people I've spoken with that have these Chinese/Japanese symbols and haven't a clue about what it means.....that or the kanji symbol they chose for something was wrong because the artist they got it from didn't have a clue about what the symbol meant when they picked it out. You'd be surprised how many people actually just pick things like that off the wall when they come into a tattoo parlor, and there is no way to know if the description is right for it (since obviously you don't know if the artist is even familiar with the culture). This is of course void if you understand kanji and the like, but the majority probably do not.

I myself don't have a desire for such (but then again, I'm probably more literate on kanji meaning than alot of people around my area because I enjoy learning about Japanese/Chinese culture).

Piercings are fine, mostly, and I don't have a problem with them.

Tattoos on the other hand are a bit different. I have quite a few friends with tattoos, but I particularly don't like them and I never have, for some reason. In actuality, both my mother and sister have tattoos and they even asked me when I was 13-16 if I wanted a tattoo or piercing, but I've never wanted one. I didn't necessarily think they were tacky/trashy; I just didn't want one. I guess I kind of don't see the point.

When I see those people who are on T.V. that tattoo theme their whole body or something similar, all I can think is "good for them." If that's what they want to do, then fine.

One thing, though, is that I really like girls who don't have tattoos. Not that I don't like girls who do have them, it's just that I like girls who have "pure" skin with nothing on it. No idea why, though, really.

I don't mind people with tattooes or piercings, but if it's too over the top or disgusting then I think it just looks horrible. I have both my ears pierced, I have no intention though of getting anything else pierced since I think it's enough. But, I have a friend in school and he's got his eyebrow pierced, and his ears(at the top and bottom of ear, looks good. ^_^) and it isn't that bad.
My dad has a load of tattooes on his arms and I don't like it but they don't bother me much, my half-brother also has one tattoo on his arm and it's very disturbing. -_-
I guess it depends on what type of tattoo whether it's looks revolting, my dad - for instance - he has like a bird or butterfly or something on his arms whereas my half-brother has a cloth-less woman.

I'm inclinded to agree there as well.

I think some tattoos really are "over the top" and add to shock effect. I think simple tattoos are a better but that's my own opinion (as my two are quite simple, a nautical star on my left hip and a nautical crescent moon on my right hip). I know some people really like the over the top look.

One of my favorite shows I used to watch was called "Miami Ink." I think it's still on but I just haven't watched it lately. Anyway, the show is about a tattoo parlor in Miami and the stories behind some of the choices people make when deciding what tattoo they select to have on their body. Many of the people on the show get tattoos in memory of a deceased family member, an image that is symbolic of a life changing event, or a symbol for something important to their self identity. The tattoo artists themselves believe each tattoo is a very special work of art and put their all into each creation.

So I can see tattoos as a form of body art that holds a lot of meaning to the individual. The same goes for piercings, it's simply a form of expression. Even if it happens to be vulgar and obscene, you do gain some insight about the person just by looking at their choice of tattoos or piercings.

I have no real issues with them, I have neither Tattoos, nor Piercings to date but I certainly wouldn't rule out ever having any.

Although, I really wonder how someone can get their tongue pierced, to me that seems quite inconvenient, painful and would just get in the way. Plus the tongue is supposed to be one of the muscles that receive the most blood is it not? I haven’t really researched it but it just sounds like a health risk to me…

Some tattoos are really nice, but I don't fancy having to have something that will stick on my body for the rest of my life. Going for surgery to remove them doesn't appeal to me either.

As for piercings, well, ear and nose piercings are ok. However, piercing any other part of your body eg. tongue, belly arm and etc makes it look really painful.

I don't want either of them. Seems painful, if you ask me.

I liked that show too, I haven't seen it in along while though. As said before I have two piercings (ear and brow) and I want some tattoos, as for the acceptability of them, I think it all depends on where they are and where you want to work.

hmmm? i think it's really important to be older and a little more thoughtful and reasonable about tattoos, piercings are no big deal as they heal/grow back, although some do look really unappealing.

i have five large-ish tattoos and ten piercings. only my nose and ear piercings are visible, unless i am wearing a fairly short sleeved shirt. i planned it that way. it's really nobody else's business as i see it. on a side note, i'm 41 and have had my tattoos for over 15 years, and they honestly do not look any different than when i got them. i've had them touched-up once(red, yellow and white mostly). however, i am fanatical about my skincare, and am always slathering lotion all over(i fear looking my age).

i looked at my tattoos as rites of passage to mark certain important points/events in my life. all of them have artistic integrity(meaning, no Tweety-bird or MOM tattoos), and all of them are brightly coloured.

i also have a bit of an issue with arm-bands that do not entirely encircle the arm, they just seem sort of lazy and half finished, if you are going to call it a band, then it needs to go round the arm. it may be more painful on the inside arm, but it looks SO much better, folks should just go ahead and bite the bullet.

all that said, my best friend is pretty much covered in tattoos, and she's only 24, i never attempt to discourage her from getting them, but i have often mentioned that she might want to consider what they might look like when she's 60. she's a beautiful girl, and they certainly DO NOT detract from her beauty. but she has not considered or planned each of hers, as carefully as i have mine. she will often decide that she wants a new tattoo, and go out and get it that night.

also, as with anything else, i think that folks must wait until they get out on their own to do these things, out of respect for ones parents.

In my personal experience, every person with a piercing is an utter failure. I've never seen successful people with piercings in person.

That being said, there are many successful people with tattoos. I wouldn't ever get one, but I don't think it's associated with any failures.
