no offense, but i am wondering if you mean "unusual" piercings? i'd say around a third to half the people in the world have their ears pierced. as far as being failures, that might use some clarification as well. i'm 41, i support myself quite nicely, i have a happy relationship, i have two degrees, and i can easily say that i have never been discriminated against, because of either my tattoos or piercings. i do work in an Arts related field, and i do not make a six-figure income or own my own home, which might be factors in your sense of "failure". and no, i am not offended, just curious. |

Yeah, I'm referring to the lip rings and whatnot. I see fancy rich white ladies with earrings all the time. Thing is, I've never met any successful people with an unusual body ring. I'm not saying it's not possible, just saying I haven't met any. |

fair enough. i'm not a big fan of lip rings either. they just look uncomfortable and folks ALWAYS play with them. i don't feel like nostril piercing is so odd(mine are extremely tiny fish-tail diamond chips), as it's practiced in so many cultures through-out the world. the septum(through the middle) can be nice with a smaller gauge and not some dangling monstrosity, but it's pretty in-your-face, and most folks i know that have these, only wear them in "civilian life". i see your stance, it's pretty hard to be taken seriously with facial tattoos or multiple piercings through your head, it makes one seem like they are fighting/defying society purposefully. my ears are 00 gauge and 2 gauge, but i wear solid plugs, which people always think are smaller than they really are, and are usually SHOCKED at how large the actual holes are(i currently have Jesus in one ear, and Buddha in the other, and stars in my 2 gauge holes). i just saw the "Trashy or Classy" subtitle to this thread, and i think that's ENTIRELY up to the individual, many folks in the tattoo community ASPIRE to be Trailer-Park, so that classification would make them happy. personally, i'm just a normal guy, and my "body art"(i hate that term) is just a tiny part of "ME", like my being gay. i'm a much more complex person than just those elements. i believe that most of my associates see me as pretty "together", i dress nicely, i speak intelligently, and i'm a gregarious person, who makes friends easily. so, i suppose, i fall into "Classy". thanks for just answering my question and not getting all riled-up and offended, over me questioning you. |

I'm not huge on piercings, I'd never get any. Now that's not saying that I dislike them in general, it's just that I don't find certain piercings like those bull nose rings or huge eyebrow piercings appealing in any way. Some are ok, but some are ridiculous IMO. Tattoos on the other hand, I'm a huge fan of. A tattoo looks like a possibility in my future (I'm thinking something along the lines of what WWE superstar Umaga has on his hand and forearm. Click the link and go to pic 27 to see what I'm talking about.) I'm also attracted to women that have tattoos. Not tramp stamps (those are too common to be cool), but real tattoos. I'm extremely attracted to Kat Von D because of her many tattoos. I don't know, I guess it's just a turn-on for me, lol. I also find face tattoos to be great, but only if done right. Kat Von D has little stars tattooed around her eye, which is awsome. Mike Tyson has that awsome tribal thingy around his eye, and that's cool too. The Game has a small star underneath his eye, and that's also cool. But the people who get their whole faces done take it too far IMO. |

i need to introduce you to my friend Julia, she's WAY more attractive than that girl, i'd be a match-maker*HEARTS AND FLOWERS* but, seriously....Mike Tyson....UGH! he looks ridiculous. he's not Polynesian, he's black, why would he get a Pacific-Islander tattoo? it's so LOOK-AT-ME, it makes me cringe. and, i never thought I'D be found DEAD on the WWF home page. |

Yeah, there's no need to get angry about this. I don't have all the answers, so I can't get all mad and say you're all wrong, as this is an opinionated question and you can't BE wrong. And hey, Kat Von D would be just as sexy without those tattoos, it's just more appealing to some people because they think tattoos are awesome. It's like having a sexy form of what you like a lot. So yeah, while some people might turn you down from a job because of this (happened to my older sister), I really couldn't care less. It's not something I'd consider doing, so I feel indifferent about the whole thing. |

Well to be honest, tattoos are a huge turn off for me in a girl. I just think they look gross. Girls just look so much better with out them and tons more sexy. As for me having them, I feel the same way. My body is a temple, so why trash it or do harm to it (or whatever that saying was on the side of that Jamba Juice cup )Piercings I feel the same way about. I just like girls with one in each ear. And my family and extended family are all really strong in my religon, so no one would be caught dead with any of this stuff in my family. And when I got about 7 aunts who would probably all get a sander and tear the tattoo right off if anyone got one  |

i wouldnt really mind tattoos or piercings on other people, well, it all depends and actually where it is...and how revealing it is, and also the content of it. If the tattoo or piercing has some sort of meaning, or depth as to why they got it, i actually like those, cause they have some meaning, but if its on a part of the body where its too revealing...like hands, face, etc, where everyone can see them, or the tat has no real reason, its not really that appealing...but meh, thats just me |

^ Well said, Phoenix, about meaning. I have three tattoos and each one bears a deep meaning for me, and was very well thought out. There symbols of my aspirations and to remind me to stick to the rules and morals I've set for myself. As for girls I dont mind them but I prefer them, as phoenix said, something meaningful and not just some cherries or a butterfly by their bum bum or 'hidden valley' for some type of shallow sex appeal. Something really deep I love, however. This is random but having tattoos on the face such reminded me of this. A good friend of mine had a long scar on her face and I actually found it very attractive. She obtained it under noble circumstances and I had great admiration for her. |

lol I have 5 piercings on my ears (2 on my left, 3 on my right). on the topic of meaning, my uncle wants to get his life tatooed on his body (like significant symbols and things like that), it's gonna cost him thousands but I wish him luck in saving. For some cultures, piercings, tatoos and jewellry has a pretty big symbolism (India's the example I have in mind, though there's probably others), so I think in that case it transcends the case of classy or not to a case of necessity. I've been contemplating getting a tatoo but idk. I probably won't end up doing it. The whole permanent thing... :S I know it sounds ridiulous, but if I got one i don't want to use all the makeup and stuff hiding it, especially if I did it before I got married (if I ever got a tat, I decided it'd be on my right shoulderblade. Painful, but that's what I want). I've been told getting a tatoo feels something like a blunt knife running through your skin... :S might need a vodka before I went into get one done if I decided to. I don't know about these things being classy or trashy, I think it's just an individual opinion. |

Tattoos are really looked down in a lot of high class societies. In Japan, people with tattoos are usually assumed to be part of the Yakuza. Tattoos are mostly popular with prisoners and criminals, but in today's society there is a RISE in people getting tattoos. It sickens me. ![]() Also in the Jewish religion you are not allowed to get any tattoos. http://www.geocities.com/mnlerner2000/ plus a lot of Jews who were in concentration camps in WW2 were tattooed to identify that they were Jews. Terrible ![]() I don't mind piercings too much except for the ones on the faces. Naval and Ears is ok. The nose ring and lip rings are nasty. |

hmm, i find the link interesting because that's in the bible also. Yet I know Christians with tatoos :S lol one of my best friends has tatoos and piercings in many different places, and I think she's really pretty ^^ She showed me some photos of her doing dancing with her dancing partner, and my jaw just dropped ![]() anyway, random history: I can't remember who or where I found this out from, but in the Victorian Era many women pierced their nipples to encourage them to stay pert and upright xD |

I don't like tattoo but I like how people draw tattoo on their skins. I must say that some of the tattoos are so beautiful, like how Miami Ink tattoo artists draw. I used to stick a tattoo sticker on my hand or leg but I was scolded by my mother. She doesn't like tattoo. XD I have piercings in my ears. I wear them everyday. I don't mind piercings except piercing in nose, tongue or lip which is so nasty. |

I don't really like them. If you want one that's fine with me, I won't judge you, but would I let a needle near my skin? no. Would I pierce my skin? no. |

I'm not particularly interested in either. If I ever do get a tattoo, it's going to be something spiritually moving to me that I can easily cover up, like on my back or upper arm. |

I have two, one on my back sayinh Carpe Diem meaning "seize the day", and also my brother's name in Korean on my right shoulder. Anybody have a sleeve here? Recently I've been thinking more and more about getting one, I'm half Korean and want to get a dragon holding a yeoiji (sacred orb) around a pujok, with some waves/clouds in the background. I'm just a bit reluctant because of my work and also actually going to Korea. If you have a tattoo in Korea you are literally treated like a criminal and can be refused entry in certain places. I normally go 1-2 times a year and I think my family might have a heart attack if they seem me all "tatted up". Also I'm worried about my career opportunites, I'm a recent university graduate who's trying to climb the corporate ladder... I would love to hear some personal experiences from those who have tattoos and how it has effected your work, if at all. |

I'm not a huge fan of tattoos especially when people go overboard with them sometimes. I think it's gross when I see girls with them (half the girls I know plan to get one when we graduate) but I plan to NEVER get one mainly because of needles. But I understand people get them for certain reasons such as culture and I respect that.

I design a lot of tattoos for other people, and have designed a few that I've thought about getting myself, but I change my mind way too often to get anything permanent. I'd love to get into the tattooing business, but most people won't take a tattoo artist seriously is he isn't tattooed from head to toe himself |

Personally, I am not too fancy to wear tattoo's or piercings. There is only one big exception. If my mother suffers a sudden death by illness, a car accident or murder, then I am willing to place a tattoo on my body as a token to her. As for the current discussion, I think people these days get tattoo's just because it looks cool or anything. That's the wrong reason, IMO, to get a tattoo. Employers might turn you down for a job because you wear a tattoo. If you have a reason for the tattoo, like my example for my mother, then they could live with it. It's also a common misunderstanding that people with tattoo's are rude and impolite people. As for piercings, it all depends on where they are and how much you have. I wouldn't be all comfortable when someone with 3 piercings in his/her eyebrow, 5 in his/her ear and one through the lip. Some even take a tongue piercing because it could increase the pleasure in oral sex. I know I wouldn't be too happy if that piercing would be a tad pointy.

I love tattoos! I currently have the four, and they are all part of my journal a life. Each has a story, a meaning and a lesson attached to it. When I get old I want my skin to be a story of my time here. I've met people with huge amount of artwork and/or piercings. I've even met people with scarification and body mods!! I respect people's art and decoration, because we are all trying to be happy and some people find happiness by artwork and decoration. |

Well the thing with this thread is that tattoos are completely different from piercings... I DON'T believe in tattoos, unless is something meaningful and small in size, on your arm or fist or something. And I'm fine with piercings, however only if they're on your earlobes... I can't stand people with 10 pieces of metal all over their face (not to offend anyone that's like this) So... I guess I'm fine with tattoos and piercings, but one if they're very minor. |

I agree that tattoos are better if they have some meaning involved. I currently have two tattoos. The one on my rignt arm has my son Jason's name on it and the kanji for "healer" which is what Jason's name means. On my left arm I have the kanji "ai." It's one of my favorite characters, and I just love the meaning behind it. I eventually want to get a motherhood knot tattooed at my hip, and have a dot placed in there for Jason and for any other children I may have in the future. Now, for the other side of this discussion: piercings: Right now, I have only my ears pierced. I have three piercings in each earlobe, and I also have my cartilage done in my left ear. I have also had my left eyebrow done, and my nose has been done twice. However, due to my face rejecting those piercings, I had to remove them. As you can probably tell, I am not against tattoos or piercings. I like them...but in moderation. |
