Well, all of us know that in this day and age, vanity consumes alot of the younger generation.

We try to make ourselves more attractive through make up, stylish haircuts and hair products, nice clothes, good hygiene, beauty products, expensive perfume/cologne, etc. We also see alot more of us looking into a mirror anytime we pass one to check up on how we're looking.

Question is though, who is more vain these days? The men or the women?

Recently, it's been suggested that men are starting to get much more vain about their looks, while with women it has dropped slightly from earlier generations. However, I know that pretty much everybody I know is somewhat vain haha. Even I'm not innocent of it....I mean I shave, use beauty products (Olay, MAC, etc), wear makeup on occasion, have some expensive perfumes/colognes and clothes, style my hair, etc.

What do you all think? Which sex is more vain these days? I'm not going to put a "both are vain" option, since I know that both are to an extent. We're simply going for which sex is "more" vain in your opinion. ^_^

I would still have to see females, although I would agree that males would slowly be closing the gap.

You just need to look at the retail price of female clothing, haircare products and compare them to the male counterparts which are far less expense.

That's a clear sign that females buy far more of that type of thing are a willing to pay more for it.

I'd have to say women, although there are some males who are vain about their appearance as well. Honestly, it's not as if they need make-up, or fake-tan to look good...

While in reality you are making yourself less natural, uglier and ill. Yes, make-up makes you ugly not prettier, its a mask(que) not anything that enhances someones beauty, and those who say it does make someone beautifull is a painting collector.

I have no idea about "these days" all i know is that there is no difference in how people think they need to alter themselves to be liked, and its a sad thing.

Whether or not this make-up is a "beautiful" thing is an opiniontive manner and to say that you're views on the manner is fact would be incorrect. Though, personally, I hate females that wear that kind of crap excessively.

I seriously believe that females are the most vain ones. I think when we speak of vanity in this case, we're not just refering to how females/males want to look their best or whatever. I'd say we're also talking about social issues. I find that females are much more sensitive of how people think and as such they want to adjust themselves to be thought of positively. Most guys{like my friends, for instance. Heh.} I know are a lot more careless of what people think and are obviously less sensitive. Most of them just care about living their lives and doing whatever the hell they feel like doing in life. I do think that the rise of female abuse against males among other negative actions is a result of their psychology.

I'm personally one of the least vain people you'll ever meet... To the misfortune of my mother, unfortunately. I usually go out to say that I really don't need to look perfect, need more then one pair of shoes, or to be dressed my best. I'm much more focused on things like my education, studying, and my personal activities. I find the former stuff to be rather unimportant. Unfortunately, my mother always goes on about how I should have more then one pair of shoes or should have my clothes put away "perfectly." In fact, she's so picky about that sort of thing that she goes on to fold my clothes for me and select a set of clothes for me on a number of occasions. She doesn't always do this for me, but it still annoys the hell out of me.

Although I do personally think that within our soceity today that dressing properly and presentably is a good thing to do, I also will go on to say that you don't have to be perfect with that sort of thing.

ok then, i would say that women are more vein than males, but there are cases where its quite the opposite  mainly because, as Drew said, most guys arent really that bothered about their appearance, so it doesnt bother them, but it does for females, so they go the extra distance to look that little bit better.

Ok, im not the most vein person, but i can be quite vein at times, i pretty much make sure i look good no matter where i go  even if its just going to school :P
even though i can be vein, im not one to go buying every little accessory i can so i can look good, i mean, i only have one pair of shoes...but theyre falling apart  but my friends and i...well, we pretty much all have long hair, some longer than the girls in our group, and we all seem to be about the same in how vein we are

I think there are a lot MORE vain women certainly than men, but I also think the men who DO get really vain get MUCH WORSE than most women.

I'm not terribly vain, though if I look like crap (oily nasty hair and what not) I hate to go out in public, but that usually only happens when I'm too sick too anyways.

Make-up I rarely wear and usually only as 'spot treatment' if there's something particularly alienish growing out of my face or to add a little color etc. A lot of the girls around where I live really cake it on and their so shocked by my good complexion. I can't help laughing because I just never wear the stuff and wash my face at least every other day. GASP Hygiene is magic!

But back to vanity--I think when it goes to trying to change your natural appearance substantially that's when it's going too far. Wearing awesome clothes for me is less about 'fitting in' and more about honestly just FEELING AWESOME. If I'm not in fantastic clothes I don't feel bad, I just feel better if I know I look good.

God I'll be surprised if any of this makes sense. I should not type before coffee.

I don't know about you all, but when girls have to wear 10 pounds of make-up it's really nasty and unattractive. Be yourself.

I think it is women.i have NEVER worn any make-up aside from nail polish and halloween stuff that washes off. but other than that i have never put a dab of make-up on. i would rather be seen how how i am then how i would make myself up to be. i dont like make-up, its disgusting  and it hides who you really are. (and most of it is made os stuff that just makes your skin worse) but i have noticed that its mostly women who are wearing the make-up but also men have have started to wear to wear it now. I say its women who are more vain but men are really close behind.

i doubt any of that made any sence since im half-dead from lack of sleep

Women. I don't wear make-up or worrie how my face looks, i only pay attention to my hair. Most of the girls in my class wears tons of make up and they look weird with all the eyeliner and stuff that i don't know what its called. I just hate it when most girls wear make-up because they think they look bad, and plus when they wear make up they all almost look the same as singers like Avril Lavigne or who ever. Point is make-up makes most girls terrible.

Women. A quick look at the number of clothing, accessory, makeup etc stores for women versus those that are for men or are unisex settles the question. I bet that even if you are a guy and reading this, it is easier to recall names of womens' makeup brands than mens' shoes.

Having said that though, coming from a more asian background, I can say that among younger people my age the vanity is more equal between the sexes. Women still wear more makeup but guys seem to have more jewellery! And the hairdressing shops now crank out extremely elaborate male styles that consist of sections that need different treatments.

I've actually noticed myself become more vain as I've gotten older...
When I was younger, I was a carefree tomboy. I never cared about dressing right or wearing make up to fit in, and it never bothered me that I wasn't as cute as the other girls.
But when I started going to highschool, I think that's when I got a bit more vain about my appearance. I started wearing more stylish clothing and bought make-up to make myself more attractive.

It's weird, because there are certain things I am vain about, but others things I'm not. Quite honestly, I go to college and I just dress to be comfy and only wear makeup if I'm going out someplace. I really don't care what people think, but I do start to care if I'm giving a presentation in front of the whole class or I want to impress someone. So I am half the time, and not half the time as well.

I think it's fairly even as far as males and females go. In fact, I wouldn't say it's much of a gender thing, but more of an individual thing. My brother, for instance, I would consider him rather vain for a guy. There's not a day he doesn't straighten his hair, and I probably straighten mine 3 times a year at the most. So there you go, not a gender thing, but an individual concept in my opinion.

LOL, ive actually been noticing that in myself also

Over the past few years, ive been paying a little more attention to the way I look and how I present myself...most likely because at times I worry about what others think, which does start to get a tad annoying after a while ^_^

And yeah, I agree with you about it being more of an induvidual thing rather than a gender thing. My mum for instance, she isnt really the most vain person, putting it bluntly, she's a tomboy :P but there are times where you does get quite vain about her appearance :) So yeah, im pretty sure it would be just an induvidually based 'thing'

@GLP: Yeah, I think the reason we care more about our appearance as we get older (or beyond puberty, right after) probably has something to do with attracting mates. ;)
Though I honestly don't try to look good just for males, I think females enjoy being around females who can look presentable.

Really depends on the type of situation. I really can't imagine any of my friends caring how formal I dress or how clean my room is{which is generally in a mess. Yeah, I'm a lazy bastard. :P}. But I'd imagine presentation would be important if you were going out to dinner or a job interview. You know, the sort of places where people actually pay attention to that sort of thing.

I'm personally not an overly vain person... Although I do show vanity when it comes to my work ethic and accomplishments. I can be pretty picky when it comes to those things.

I say men are more vain as i can spend any thing up to an hour doing my hair (when i can be bothered to do it) and stuff and i think that is quite vain as it takes me 5 - 10 minutes without a mirror.

Most of the women that I've encountered are incredibly vain. And yet, most of the men I've met case after them!

So it evens out in that women make themselves all plastic, but men go crazy after these plastic babes :?

What?

Ha, the "GASP Hygiene is magic!" Part made me laugh. I wash my face every day too, and never wear a spot of makeup. I don't even know how to put it on right

But even though I don't wear makeup and whatnot, I'm definitely vain. I have seriously started at myself in the mirror for twenty minutes and not realized how much time went by. I like strutting around the beach in bikinis and compulsively shower and wash my face. I never really wear makeup or do much with my hair because I think I look good the way I am, which is how I define vanity.

I AM BEAUTIFUL. BOW DOWN TO ME.

That's not completely fair to say. I wash my face twice a day, use topical treatments, and even take prescription medication for acne, and my skin is far from looking flawless. :( In fact I always have had small pimples on my skin since I was like 11. I'm now 20 and I STILL breakout. It really sucks. I'll probably always have pimples. :/

I only wear makeup on occasion, and when I do it's Bare Minerals, the stuff that's supposed to be gentle for all skin types and doesn't clog pores. Well even that I feel gross after wearing it all day. Plus my skin is almost always dry from the topical treatments I use, since they are so strong.
Any tips would be great from you girls with the gorgeous skin. : (

Also yes obviously I'm vain if I care so much about the condition of my skin.
I almost always look at myself whenever I pass a mirror or even highly reflective glass. Well sometimes I can't just help it! It's honestly like instinct! :XD

Definitely feel for you Manji. I have exactly the same problems with all the acne medications and skin treatments. It's so tiring after trying so many things. I do care about what I look like and it sometimes does affect my confidence level, but it's just something everyone has to live with. I truthfully feel that I'm stuck at 15 forever. People always assume I'm that age because of how I look. I've been carded at movies and friends of my relatives often think I'm still in high school.

I know some people who are just the exact opposite of being vain and they are very smelly and rather nerdy. I guess this is one of the reasons why nerds tend to be more successful in life because they aren't paying too much attention to their looks.

As far as my hygiene goes, I'm not really hardcore about it despite my mother being in that industry. Of course, I do the basic stuff like put on my deodorant and take showers. But I wouldn't buy any special products or any sort of drug that would make me look better. As far as I'm concerned, I already am better than everyone else so I don't need to waste my time trying making something into perfection what is already perfection.
