Black Hole, a rascist term; Never use "black" as an adjective

July 07, 2008

A special meeting about Dallas County traffic tickets turned tense and bizarre this afternoon.

County commissioners were discussing problems with the central collections office that is used to process traffic ticket payments and handle other paperwork normally done by the JP Courts.

Commissioner Kenneth Mayfield, who is white, said it seemed that central collections "has become a black hole" because paperwork reportedly has become lost in the office.

Commissioner John Wiley Price, who is black, interrupted him with a loud "Excuse me!" He then corrected his colleague, saying the office has become a "white hole."

That prompted Judge Thomas Jones, who is black, to demand an apology from Mayfield for his racially insensitive analogy.

Mayfield shot back that it was a figure of speech and a science term. A black hole, according to Webster's, is perhaps "the invisible remains of a collapsed star, with an intense gravitational field from which neither light nor matter can escape."

Other county officials quickly interceded to break it up and get the meeting back on track. TV news cameras were rolling, after all.

Not a really recent story, I knew about some time ago but found a video about it just today.

And I must say, I'm sure MLK would be proud! D:

Discuss.

From Wikipedia, but it is correct surprisingly.

A black hole is a region of space in which the gravitational field is so powerful that nothing, not even light, can escape its pull after having fallen past its event horizon. The term "Black Hole" comes from the fact that, at a certain point, even electromagnetic radiation (e.g. visible light) is unable to break away from the attraction of these massive objects. This renders the hole's interior invisible or, rather, black like the appearance of space itself.

I believe the above is Political Correctness gone to far, there was nothing racist with the comment, nor was that his intention.

Oh PLEASE!

If Mayfield was being racist and was made to apologize, then shouldn't Price also have to apologize, for saying "White Hole?"

This is just another prime example of SOME the black community playing the racsict card all too often, this is just ridiculous and such double standards. Sure there are racist people out there, but a term "Black Hole" is nothing of the sort. That guy Price needs help if he takes offense to such a thing.

Argh, this really annoys me so much! It's just so ridiculous it's beyond laughing now.

While I think that would suffice as a comment on how I feel about that article, I would like to also comment on their idiocy and sensitivity to such terms.

I would also use the term 'black hole' for my dryer, for the many socks that were found partnerless. Its a general term and figure of speech which has been used for a long time! Why WOULD they be sensitive to the usage of that term in that context?

Over-sensitivity and non-usage of little grey cells would be the issue here.

What? How can the term "black hole" possibly be racist? I think common sense is taking a backseat to political correctness. Why should Mayfield even be made to apologize?

Oh Jesus Christ people.

Isn't the term 'African American' these days anyways? How do they have the right to get b*tchy about the use of the term 'black' to anything when they insist they shouldn't be called that anymore?

The ONLY way I can see the original comment being offensive is if the Mayfield referred to the office as a 'black hole' to imply that the people who work in the central collections office were of African decent and useless or that unpaid traffic tickets are by majority from African descendants.

Which I certainly didn't read into.

I mean that's me REALLY TRYING to find something offensive.

And what the hell is up with that judge? Aren't they supposed to be impartial?

EXACTLY. People are so sensitive to stuff like this, anything with color is often assumed to be a racist term. Absolutely disgusting. Who the hell doesn't know what a black hole is, and would assume it would be a racist term? Honestly, that is just retarded. Humanity can be SO stupid it is unbelievable.

I presume he is associating 'Black Hole' with the meaning 'A**hole' with skin colour, henceforth the racist implication? Perhaps he went overboard and thought (or imagined) too much?

Just like 'Assume' makes an 'A**' of 'u' and 'me'? (I am just quoting my prof)

P.S.: Profanity above is solely intended for explanation, no offense

What's next? We have to change the meaning of black Friday to "Day after Thanksgiving" Friday?

Some people are just dumb, plain and simple. And that judge is one of them.

Well the could change it to--Stores No Longer in Debt Day, but that's hard to fit into ad space. @_@

Thank god when it comes to commercial enterprises some things are SACRED. Since THEY have the money it won't be changing.

It's unbelievable how many people DON'T KNOW that the term 'black Friday' does not come from the fact that it's a really heavy shopping day and hard on employees, but that it stands for retail stores finally 'being in the black' or out of debt because negative amounts in book keeping are commonly written in red.

Whoa...god I'm such an economics geek. Sorry e.e Future CPA here.

EXACTLY!!!! thankyou...finally, someone realises what this world is coming to  its such a pain when this kind of thing happens all over the place, and in situations where there is no real 'threat' of racial attacks....it just annoys the $h!t out of me <_<

(oh, i made a topic a while ago about this kind of thing as a whole :) )

Fail written all over it.

It's absurd how oversensistive some parts of our community have become.

I even recall something ages ago that the old nursery rhyme "baa, baa, black sheep" was getting looked at as well as racist.

It's a word will no ill intention whatsoever, some people in the world need to get the f*ck over it.

Honestly, being PC doesn't make you any better than a "racist" person. It just sickens me how things are sometimes interpreted as "racist" when in reality, they're completely not. I hear about these kinds of ridiculous court cases every single day and I just feel like choking these people to death. It's one thing to be offended by Rosie O'Donnell's "ching chong chang" comment but it's another to be trippin' balls over something like "black hole." Soon you won't see any Ritz crackers being sold in stores because it's seen as "racist."

Here's what my favorite morning radio show has to say about this whole debocle:

On another note, I'm reminded of Michael Savage's comment about kids with autism.

They sure make it seem like all the "white holes" out there are out to get them..paranoid idiots. Sorry, but there's good and bad in every race. When they're out to demonize everyone in said race, just so they can find anything and distort it to seem offensive, that's pretty racist in itself right there.

I would be loling at the thing if someone accused me of being racist for THAT. I'd also tell John Wiley Price to shut the cluck up or I'd cut him a new black hole.

lol...it seems that a lot of people here share a very similar opinion on this issue...and good, its a pain when you find people like this...of course, in my group at school, we make jokes like these quite a lot of the time...like someone says black, refering to something completely innocent, and jokingly...someone...mainly woody or liam...would just say racist...jokingly, it gets annoying, but funny at the same time, or perhaps thats just our weird sense of humour

You know, with such ridiculous thinking I suppose I'm racist because I drive, and say I drive a black car too?

Well anyway, I think a vast majority of us believe it's just a total joke, I honestly can't think of it in any other way then by joking around/sarcasm because it's just absurd...

I don't mean to try and drag this any further than it already has but this might start a trend in pointing out more things that could be seen as "racist". "Black" coffee anyone? I'm surprised this hasn't been brought up (and I'm not trying to egg them on here). But not just the word "black", but maybe also words like "cocoa" or "chocolate" (which are basically the same) or "dark" (Batman = The Dark Knight = racist?).
