Whoa, that is not cool. Iraq has been through so much crap and now they can't even have the honor to participate in the Olympic Games? What a mess.

yeah, that is pretty mean...and quite controversial, but again, as with alot of things that take place on a world stage, its all influenced by politics...which really doesnt have a place in sports...or at least thats what i think

Well that is the whole idea behind the Olympics anyways, to put aside our differences and meet in neutral terms despite our differences to watch the best athletes each country has to offer. There are and were many countries that have disputes and such and were still allowed to the games, this is ridiculous.

Yeah, in fact I remember that North and South Korea did meet to propose the possibility of ONE united Korea team for the Olympics, but that didn't push through.

You have got to be kidding me.

It's just 2 weeks out for crying out load, I'm only really basing what I've seen on this report but it's just absurd.

While they may have just 7 athletes competing everyone would have had to work their butts off to qualify, and now measures beyond their own control will kick them out...

It appears the Iraq government have some problems at the moment, but it's the Olympic games...c'mon....

The report does say however there is a chance the decision may be reversed, for the athletes sake let's just hope it is. Don't punish them for their governments actions...

I agree, for once, don't take government crap out on athletes that trained their whole lives for this moment.

Given the circumstaces described in that article, Iraq should totally be given special consideration. Sure, they changed their National Olympic Commitee, but that's because a good chunk of their old was was MISSING! This upsets me.

Some problems? They've been dissolved. At this very moment, Iraq is little more than a US-administrated military state. The same thing has stopped them from fielding a soccer World Cup side. Yes, it's a shame, but it has happened before: in Barcelona they refused to recognize the Soviet Union; they competed under a "Unified Team".

There's also a precedence for athletes without a country to participate as Individual Olympic Participants. All this means is that in official records no country will be named; the Iraqi athletes still have the right to participate, with everyone in the stadium still knowing where they come from and what they represent.

Iraq being banned is rubbish. Trust those in power to act on paranoia and prejudice (sp?) again, because it's the only thing that ever motivates them to make a decision at all. I feel bad for the Iraqis :(

Thats good if they did unban them. I agree with all of you by the way. Chosis raised a very good point as well. Banning them is like saying 'Screw you' directly to their face. That's extremely ridiculous and incredibly bad diplomacy.

It is very true politics plays way more of a role in ALOT of things then it really should. I'm guessing there is a more appropriate topic to discuss that in though ^^

Well, the Olympics have pretty much started without Iraq so an appearance of the Iraq Olympic team would be unlikely. So maybe another 4 years?

Just so that you know the entire Iraki national TKD team was assassinated, taken out 1 by 1. Politics IS important and China was once a red country although it seems to have fallen from grace. Im still a revolutionary do any of you guys know what that means?
