I'm just wondering if anyone remembers what it means when a character is surrounded by a green box (as opposed to the regular blue) in SWXL. I knew it once but it has completely slipped my mind and Google has sent me in circles. A different sound is heard when you select them.
Thanks to anyone who remembers.

EDIT: Eh, don't worry. I've remembered and looked it up with that in mind and found I was right.

Oh and if you haven't played SW + XL yet then you should because you're missing out on a lot ;)

Well I would certainly like to know what it does. I loaded both SW and XL up on my PS3 today, starting a new game and only Kenshin has the green outline?

Anyway playing this game again takes a bit getting used to, especially having the camera locked and not being able to move and block. Oh and it bought back painful memories of the dreaded castle levels!! These are so awful, and can take forever sometimes. But I do love some of the old designs: Keiji was a beast back then, and Tadakatsu, Hideyoshi, Ina, Mitsuhide, Kenshin and Yukimura were all great.

@Kaon - Says the one who has their response hidden in a spoiler box :P
I wasn't trying to hide anything at all. Was genuinely curious and answered my own question after dredging up a memory. It's weird that that impression was given.

@Dante - Yeah, the castle stages would have to be my least favourite in the game. At times they can be very tedious. Especially after completing a tough battle and having to go through the castle to truly finish it (*cough*Azuchi*cough*). It just made things drag on.
Though I did enjoy them to an extent. I hope we do see them return in some capacity in SW3. Similar to the SW2 designs but more fleshed out and imposing.

-_-

... and not even with that increased luck green box could I obtain Tadakatsu's 6th :/

I remember resetting so many times just to have him highlighted too >.<

It's a shame I won't be able to play this game again :/ I really liked certain aspects of the game ... just not the castles

Haha, that weapon still haunts you, Honda? But can't blame you. Almost all 6th weapons in XL on Chaos were close to impossible. Even with max stats and abilities, they were still incredibly hard to obtain  . But for once, I have to praise KOEI for being so fair and allowing players to obtain them on Hard >_>.

Yes it does ... my greatest non-accomplishment -_-

There was so much more to this game that I didn't get a chance to enjoy before I got rid of the games, and then my PS2.

Unless I buy a PS3 in the coming years and Sony releases their full PS2 emulation software :shifty: and they start releasing PS2 games via PS Store :shifty: , then I won't ever get a chance to redeem myself and complete this game :/

Ahaha, it's not what I had in mind exactly, but it wouldn't hurt to keep it a spoiler in the long run, would it Astus-san? *laughs*
Literally getting sixth weapons by default on chaos is impossible, save Hideyoshi's sixth for timing and precise mission-clearing. D:
..You wish they released that PS2 emulator any time soon to redeem yourself on SW:XL, Honda-san. :shifty:

I do :shifty: I'm a much more experienced player now than I once was :sly:

I still lack the PS3, but can be solved ... in time :shifty:

I remember Keiji's 6th was rather easy. Wasn't it 1000 KOs in Hasedo? Or something really simple like that?

Luckily for Keiji's sixth weapon, his was the easiest to obtain out out the entire cast. It's his third stage which takes place in the capital/Honnoji. Make at least 2,000 kills under forty-five minutes and the supply team will appear to the western half of the map I assume.

Yea, that's it. I knew it was "certain KOs in certain stage" I was just confusing SW2 with SW:XL :P

And yes ... in time I shall :shifty: just need HDTV first

Does anybody else here agree that SW1 just had something. I think the game is better than it's successor as things felt more 'Samurai', not all 'lightning blitz' like how it is now. The music was more Samurai, clothes were more Samurai and the feel was more Samurai. Although it was flawed like when you level up so do they so its difficulty was broken without Xtreme Legends, but the small cast made the game more cosy, not bringing up loads of debate about who should not and shouldn't be playable. Although no Toshiie for me, I feel SW1 may be my favorite.

It had the benefit of being the first game of the series, so everything else after gets compared to it.

This. SW is a great example that Warriors game can be great even with a small cast. It's also the first Warriors game which featured detailed stories for all playable characters, something which made it unique from DW3 and DW4. The stages also felt more unique than in DWs thanks to the mission system.

Don't know how popular the game was, but I guess someone from KOEI wasn't satisfied with it and said "Make it more like DW!"... and then they came up with SW2 which had:

- More characters than SW but more generic stories (I'm looking at you Tokugawa officers)
- Less darker atmosphere
- Downgraded mission system, more emphasis on hack 'n slash

Your right about the game having a more "samurai feel" to it. Everything is so bright and colourful in SW2. And don't get me started on the designs, IMO most of the characters who made the transition from SW1 to SW2, looked better in SW1 with a few exceptions (Kenshin, Nobunaga, Mitsuhide), and we had alt costumes! I absolutely loved those.

Slightly off topic but even though I like the majority of SW3 designs, I'm a bit disappointed they are deviating from samurai even further than in SW2, some more armour and less flesh would of been appreciated, I love the looks of those like Masamune, Tadakatsu, Kenshin and Nagamasa etc.

I just today bought the original Samurai Warriors for PlayStation 2. Hadn't had time to play it yet, but I hope it's good! I like Samurai Warriors 2 already and sometimes the first part is the better one... :)

I have had good memories with this game, but one thing that still irritates me is the fact that I never managed to obtain Tadakatsu's 6th weapon >_>. I had all other 21 sixth weapons expect his :XD

You mean when you highlight a certain character in the selection screen the cursor is green instead of blue? That means the characters is "lucky", and gains generally better items and weapons (dunno what other stuff it does...). Also, it changes to another character each time you reset your PS/PC or whatever your console is.

And in the japanese version, "lucky" characters can get 5th/6th weapons one difficulty lv lower than required:
6th weapon: Chaos -> Hard
5th weapon: Hard -> Normal

Of course this has no effect if you have already purchased the "lower weapon requirment difficulty" thing with bonus points from options.

And lucky character thing wasn't in SW, only in SWXL (for those who didn't know).

Oh I misread your post I just thought you talked about the green cursor thing in story/free modes. But I don't know what does it effect in vs mode (if we are talking about the same thing?).

Well I don't think there's anything that puzzles in that. It only serves purpose on story/free modes, and nothing on versus mode.

So I've been replaying this lately, and there so many aspects that I love about it. Mainly the special little missions for certain characters like Hanzo and Magoichi. Also, castles are a total love/hate relationship.

On the note of green-boxed characters: I've been trying to get their 5th weapons on normal and it doesn't work, but when I do it on hard I get the supply team. So a lot of good that does me.
