If I'm verbalising his name I say Tsao Tsao, but in my head, I'll always read Cow Cow first
I've tried to say some of the other names with correctly using the KA guide, and most of them sounded as good if not better then Koei's version of them. Suhn Chuen Kuan Ping, and Chuko Liang slide particularly well off the tongue. The only one that I had a problem with was Taishi Ci. I couldn't get T‘aishih Tz‘ŭ to come out without either running out of breath or sounding a bit ill. If Q=Ch, G=K and Ca=Ts etc., why don't the letters Ch, K or Ts get used in the spelling? Was there some academic reason, or was the first English person in China particularly sucky at the alphabet? |

In Mandarin, it's pronounced "ts'ao ts'ao". However, the Cantonese pronounciation is "cho cho". Personally, I would love to know the Cantonese pronounciation for the characters' names since it sounds more "native" to me (and I really don't like Mandarin). |

I used to call him Cow Cow, but after playing through WO, I found Tsao Tsao to be more authorative. It then applied to Cao Pi and Cao Ren afterwards. |

Why did they change it? We all grew up with Cow Cow, now they just change it. Oh yea and X's are differnt too. ( for ex: Xing Cai. Instead of Shing Kai its Sing Tsai... WTF?) I sometimes still call them cow, but mostly i call them tsaio when playing DW6 or WO.

They changed it because the pronounce of Cow Cow is too hilarious. The Chinese people would laugh at that when hearing people pronounce his name in English. The pronounce of Xing Cai is Sing I' (eye). I read the Chinese pronounciations and I must say they are hard to understand Chinese characters. From WO onward, I call him Tsao Tsao. It is better than calling him Cow Cow <--It sounds like insulting Chinese name |

Had KOEI used the correct pronunciations ffrom the beginning of thier games, then changed it to this incorrect pronunciations many seem to be using, it would have been hard for them. Learning anything, specialy languages, is super easy when done in an organised way. Personally, I used to hear it "Tso Tso" in some badly translated anime but I didn't get used to it, after DW and the incorrect Cao Cao pronunciation I got used to it. Then, I heard it's acctually Tsao Tsao, I got used to it and all the Cao clan names. Same thing goes for a couple of other easy pronunciations hard ones I didn't bother to look into. I still say Cao Cao at times, 'cause I got used to it. All I can say is that it wasn't a pain in the ass to change the pronunciation, was for correcting the way I say it, had I didn't, it would have been much harder later on. |

i find it so disgraceful to hear the people who do not know chinese making fun of chinese names... not only was cao cao pronounced wrongly.. the 'yu' in guan yu n zhou yu is pronounced as 'yuee' and not 'you' 'qiao' is pronounced as 'chiao' 'lu' as in lu meng and lu bu is pronounced 'luee'.....lu xun's 'lu' is correctly pronounced as 'loo'....but 'xun' is 'shuin' and not 'shun' 'xu' is pronounced 'shiu', not 'shu' 'yan' is pronounced 'yean'...and not 'yahn' 'yuan' is pronounced 'yuen' thr r many more which i cnt think of at the moment btw... hope people actually do care to pronounce it correctly next time...btw i dunno hw 2 write it for ppl 2 understand d correct pronunciations...sorry if guys cant understand it..

Ha. I'm learning Chinese (just took my 101 exam the other day) and I still can't bring myself to say the names properly. I've just spent so many years saying the names a certain way I can't break the habit. ![]() Plus, any other DW fan could look at you funny for saying "Szoo-ma Ee" (Sima Yi). Chinese is hard language to describe phonetically, btw... But T'sao T'sao I say correctly, 'cause COW COW and COW PI are just plain ridiculous. |

In Mandarin, 'Cao Cao' is correct. 1st Cao is higher sound and 2nd Cao in flat sound. In Cantonese, he will be pronounce in 'Ts-ou Ts-ou'. 1st Tsou in flat sound, 2nd Tsou in high sound. 'Cow Cow' is funny~!!! Wakakakakka~ But it's not a right sound of Cao Cao.

Originally I pronounced it as "Cow Cow" as that's how it was way back in Kessen II. I didn't know a whole lot about the Three Kingdoms those many years ago either so didn't know any better. Although, after reading the novel (C.H. Brewitt-Taylor version) I now say it as Ts'ao Ts'ao. The same as what is now been used in the more recent KOEI games, such as the Warriors Orochi series and Dynasty Warriors 6. |
