I've always wondered if other people have a preference when it comes to listening to music with male or female vocals.
Personally, for me, most of the bands I like have male lead singers. I dunno why, but I just enjoy listing to a a nice smooth baritone voice over a feminine soprano. I have nothing against female artists, I just like a man singing to me more I guess. :P

So what about you?

I really can't stand a lot of female singers. I mean it just sounds terrible to me specially for rock bands with exception of Lacuna Coil and Within Temptation. I really dislike the singer's voice from Evanescence and Paramore as well. Flyleaf is ok. The only male voices I dislike the most are from the bands The Killers, Pearl Jam, U2, and Nirvana.

As for Asian and Pop Music, that's a different story :P

I'm pretty much the same actually o.o I only realised it not long ago but most of my fave western artist have male vocals. Most of my fave Eastern artists however are female. go figure.

You don't like Kurt Cobain? Ahh, well I find his voice very appealing, rough and edgy. :P
Another favorite of mine is Butch Walker from the Marvelous 3, but his voice is the total opposite almost.

I'm actually pretty darn particular when it comes to vocals in general. For me, it can make or break a song whether or not I like the voice or not.
I hate whiny voices and I really can't stand much of anything played on the radio, haha.

I like both but I tend to slightly prefer female vocals. Almost universal but mostly in symphonic/gothic metal where the contrast between the voice and music works rather well. Sure there are some who are irritating but then there are others like Nightwish (Old and New), Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation and Epica among others that make it so good I guess.
It just seems that women can take the songs further >_<

for me it all depends on the artist, the actual song, also the style of music that he/she sings in.

I dont really like most of the music in the mainstream/on the radio, but id rather a lot of the easy listning, or soft rock kind of music, that some of the good aussie singers can get out there, its actually quite nice :)

I voted no prefrence, because It depends for me. Most bands I like(hundreds) are male vocals. Then there are some few exceptions of some really good female vocal bands such as Shiny Toy Guns and Paramore. But when it comes to pop music, I tend to like the female singers a lot more.

I don't descriminate by gender, what matters to me is if their voice annoys me.

With that said, all I listen to is rap and pop. Most of my rappers are male (some female rappers out there are the WORST OF THEM ALL!) and most of my poppies are female. If I were to stereotype here: lot of girl rappers sound like evil witches, and a lot of male poppies moan too much when they sing (especially the rock kind).

Hmm, I've never actually thought of it that way before.

I don't mind either, as long as the songs good (in my opinion anyway)! :P

female. for me it ALWAYS sound like the guys are trying really hard to be good singers, and there are very few popular male singers(whatever genre), who i feel are really technically good. i listen to alot of soul/jazz/funk and women tend to dominate that genre by force of vocal skills alone.

What? You don't like Paramore's?

OMG, I love her voice.

When I listen to a new song, I don't really think 'bout that. However, I have thought about this before. Maybe I have preference for female singers. Well, not female singers, but female singers IN rock bands.

Huum... try something mixed :P The Hush Sound' songs, my favourite group, are sung by a girl and a boy. They just sound wonderful, mostly when they sing tocether!

To me, it depends.

If its a pop song, female vocals are great.

For hip-hop...male.

Rock/Metal/Punk...male.
(Except for Brody from The Distillers She's s great punk singer.

Dude, Paramore is a band!
lol, give the guys some recognition too :)

Rah, you don't like Hayley's / Amy's voice? Woah, I think they're awesome :/

I don't really have a preference of voice, I just really don't like girly-girl female vocals like the "new" Avril, or some of the male pop/rock artists.

Well, I have no preference too for voice genre, it depend of the singers...

I like both female or male singers voices. The sort of voices I find weird in a song, is a Male/Female Singer who feminise/masculanise his voice to sing XD Well now some male sing very well with sweet male voice, & female singers too with hard strong voice.

I don't care either way, as long as the vocals are of a good quality. I find it unbearable to listen to "singers" who really don't know how to. Or even worse, those who can't and instead get overproduced. I'm pretty snobby about my music though, the lyrics have to actually have a meaning behind them, and the instrumental has to actually match the song. Anyway, it's funny how many popular singers/bands have really horrible vocals--yet people still listen to them. Are people just getting dumber or what?

lol, thats how i can be with the music i listen to also...and thats how i feel about quite a lot of the mainstream artists, and most of the music that is played on the radio, either the vocals are just really annoying, or they at least get annoying after a while...or the song has nothing behind it...its just a one hit wonder, with no real story or purpose behind it -_-

I prefer female vocals, but I won't hate a song that's sung by a man. I guess I'm drawn to a female's singing voice because it just feels natural for me. A guy singing isn't nearly as natural IMO.

I really only like rock bands that have a female lead singer like Flyleaf, Paramore, & Evanescence. There are others that have male leads but I don't really care. For pop, being a woman is preferred. I like Gwen Stefani, Shakira, M.I.A., Katy Perry, Fergie, Nelly Furtado, & Natasha Bedingfield a lot more than say, Justin Timberlake (not hating on him, I like his music as well) or some other male pop artist. For R&B though, I prefer if you're a guy. I can listen to a female R&B singer (Keyshia Cole comes to mind) but it's a genre dominated by men and I can live with that. With Hip-Hop, I prefer men but women can do a great job as well (Lil' Mama, Lil' Kim, & Trina are 3 of my favs).

No, it's just that most people don't take music as seriously as you do. I personally think music is there for us to have a good time and feel good, and it shouldn't hang itself up on seriousness. And apparently, most people agree. I'm just as intelligent now as I was before listening to the type of music you describe.

@ SnowMan

(I had written this LONG reply, but I decided it was too off topic and hostile.)
 I totally disagree with everything you said--but I will focus on what was directed towards me. I think that if you listen to unintelligent music, you will become unintelligent. Pop, rap/hip-hop, and r&b are all unintelligent and shallow. If you listen to it for long enough, you become shallow--like the rest of the population. All art needs to have a deeper meaning behind it. Where is the deeper meaning behind "Fergilicious"?

We are pretty much musical polar oppisites. We won't ever see eye to eye, so let's just agree to disagree, this is off topic anyways. If you want to talk about genres, go read what I said about it in that thread.

generally i like to hear female vocals, especially in the music i like most which is trance. female vocals just sound more soothing and can also sound most somber or haunting.

That is wrong on SO many levels. listening to those musics didn't change who I am. it doesn't automatically change anyone. people change themselves. thank you for IGNORANTLY insulting me. :)

in metal I don't have a preference even if I listen more to the male singer, because female ones are often not very different. Symphonic metal is good, but listening only to that is... boring. I really love Floor Jansen (After Forever), Marcella Bovio (Stream of Passion), Lana Lane, and so many more (listen to Akphaezya !!!). But it's often the same kind of music, so I listen more men : James labrie (Dream Theater), Russel Allen (Symphony X), Daniel Gildenlow (Pain of Salvation), Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth), Hansi Kursch (Blind Guardian), etc, etc...
