I like SW2(XL), but the one of epic proportions has to be SW1(XL). This is where I started. This is where I brought my PS2 along on a vacation trip so I could play it. This is what started my DW/SW addiction.

SW2XL for me. The only problem with that game is that its too EASY and not challenging, even on the new hardest difficulty. but the features were AWESOME. For difficulty and edit CAW and custom battles SW2E is the best. IMO both are awesome :)

SW2. I would say SW2:XL but problems with making the game run consistently on my aging PS2.

SW and XL. where to start...i just entirely LOVE the whole feeling of the game, and i dislike that SW2 took after the DW series in terms of atmosphere and lack of Story paths and continuity of unique storylines. the noir-ish nature of SW/XL was so fitting for the era and for my tastes. i always go back to SW1 and XL, even when the other Musou games bore me.

i don't really care for many of the added SW2 characters as much as i do the original cast. i don't feel like trading Kunoichi, Goemon and Yoshi's uniqueness and removing Okuni and Ranmaru's Stories was balanced by the additions. i don't feel like Nagamasa, Nene and Musashi added enough of a different feel to remove and relegate those original characters to obscurity. thankfully lots of folks agreed and the missing three have made a return in Orochi, Ranmaru and Okuni have both played large parts in that Tale, and Yoshi was revamped and reinvented to much love in SW2:XL.

the removal of the branching story paths was nothing short of criminal, as that was one of the shining jewels of the SW series making it so different(better) than the DW series. i am truly hoping that that feature makes some sort of return in the future, and not just the one level Gaidens.

i did love the adding of the Island Folk as they made a great divergent storyline for the game. and SW2:XL's adds were all excellent. the noir-ish feel was partially restored and i have high hopes for SW3.
You've just got all my points in it. I think musou games are being more and more aimed at younger players :(

I really like the atmosphere and stories of SM1. I cannot enjoy SM2 at all till now...

SW1. For some reason I really enjoyed the sinister feel it had to it. To me it felt more dangerous and exiting than SW2. I actually love the stories that are filled with tradgedy; Yukimura's being one of my favourites. In SW2 I felt that his ending was to nice. Overall its the mood from SW1 I loved.

Also, this is the game that introduced me to Koei's other major Warriors series. I just loved playing the first level and finding out all the cool differences the Dynasty and Samurai series' had.

SW1 of course. The only other Koei game equal to this was DW4.
The story mode to this game was perfectly designed, branching storylines was awesome. SW1 also had a more realistic and sinester feel to it. It was also a lot more challenging.

SW2 marked the fall of the Warriors games. The fantasy-like design, terrible voice work and just pathetic character personalites ruined the series and I'll never forgive Koei for applying it to WO and DW6.

It remains to be SW1, though I loved SW2 as well. Personally, I love the stories and characters the most, and everything just seemed so natural. It really brought me into the world of Samurai Warriors, and I'll always remember it's impact on me. I can't wait for SW3.

SW1 will remain my favorite, partly because it's what got me into Warriors games in the first place. I think other people have touched on the other reasons pretty well. I liked the dark tone of it, and the split path endings were a nice touch. I was a bit disappointed when I found out those were gone in the second. And as much as I hated the castle levels sometimes, I found myself missing them when they were gone.

One other thing I miss, that others haven't mentioned, would be the second costumes. I mean.. they were actually different clothes, rather than color edits. Nothing wrong with those, but I find full costume changes more interesting.

Don't get me wrong, I like SW2 as well. But that's mostly for the huge influx of playable characters. And I find I like the idea of the different movesets. Some of them could have been better, I'll admit. But overall, I didn't mind it at all. Normal types did take a bit of getting used to at first, though.
