Behold the spear of Baby Dragon!

So as some may know I was lucky enough to attend the London Anime Expo last month. Here I got the chance to play a eagerly awaited demo PSP title Dynasty Warriors: Strikeforce which is said to revolve around the multiplayer. So saying this I found the difficulty a bit hard to get use to at first, me having no PSP experience also didn't help. Some may find this a highlight for challenging yourself though. Anyway, let's begin with the information gathered by myself. First off, as you probably could've guessed being my character to choose from, I chose Zhao Yun. This didn't really stop me from experimenting and being so limited because in Dynasty Warriors: Strikeforce one of the promotional highlights is being able to switch weapons and motions with characters that you've selected on the preparation screen before going into battle. Here I chose both Xiahou Dun's and Sun Shang Xiang's club and bow. Not only was this amusing to witness but it was also very fluid and exciting. The speed of combat is much quicker, the opposition is tough and unpredictable, and very fierce. I had my hands full being a single player. The enemy forces on both the Yellow Turban Rebellion and Hu Lao Gate levels are very few in comparison to the swarms of units, but they were foes not to be underestimated. Once again I'm mentioning the fact that this is a 1-4 player game, even tigers who you will encounter in Hu Lao Gate, and the wizard class who you will see in the Yellow Turban Rebellion, they will catch you off guard if you are not careful. The AI moves swiftly and can jump around the course, at times as if they were a bit too hyper. One of the abilities of Zhang Jiao's turban followers is the ability to hover and from what I saw the tigers were just aggressive. Also worth noting was that there seemed to be many officers appearing by themselves and not just peons. These officers were wielding character weapons. A officer that I viewed and can remember clearly was wielding Yuan Shao's sword from Dynasty Warriors 6.

Now about the combat, taking note of whats above, the controls were as follow, the small joystick was enabled for moving left, right, up and down. The directional buttons were used for features like healing when equipped in the prep screen, square was the standard attack, circle was swapping weapons, triangle for charges. Being a Zhao Yun fan I immediately gave the screen my attention here as Zhao Yun happened to use his stabbing attack, a attack that has varied between Yukimura Sanada from the Samurai Warriors series, and himself, over the years. It has returned once again, so expect new attacks in this PSP videogame. Moving on, triangle and circle together is used for transforming, this transformation is exclusive to promote this refreshing videogame and is called Shin Musou Kakusei. I'm sure seeing Zhao Yun's form, a Super Saiyan from the anime DBZ would be your first thoughts. These appearances are all original and look immensely thrilling. In a nutshell they give you super strength and a musou attack for a limited time. This amount of time was more than I would've expected. Lastly the X button is for bouncing around, especially handy when you have equipped a item which attaches a foot with the ability to float long and high distances.

Now concerning the stage designs, its what you wouldn't expect, they bear little similarities with DW6, the courses feel more or less confined as if they would be in Final Fantasy and in dungeons like in the Zelda series. You move one screen to another and can backtrack if you will, avoiding enemies if you please. I would take a random guess and say about 10+ foes per screen. Not many you might think, but try not to think about this as they do take a while to defeat each. The actual two courses I reviewed where displayed as followed, the YTR had generic units in its defence the main time, but there was a interesting foe mage class that could use magic against you and fly across the screen fairly slowly. The same class of the Zhang brothers, who with Zhang Jiao, Bao and Liang were beside him in the last room around a circular area and they were firing fireballs and summoning lightning as if playing with me. A instance I believe Zhang Jiao had performed a so-called miracle of his and made it tricky as the whole room was near enough lightning concentrated that had stayed fixed in position. This was a bit too uncomfortable for a single player to think hope was around the corner... But there was! Hu Lao Gate being the second scenario was full of booby-traps. One of those was arrows firing out of walls continously. They were not positioned together, but annoyingly around the whole room. I can remember this being before the Diao Chan/Zhang Liao brawl. In this room both are able to harness the ability to summon tigers out from a cage which you could just swing your weapon easily and close it. It was a tough fight so it was a priority here. Diao Chan starts the fight but after or nearly becoming a super pink naked-like version of herself, similar to Shiva from FFX but pink, she receives the help from Zhang Liao who after a while gets mad and bears fruit to purple wings which symbolize something dragon-like. These wings are not fluffy either, so sorry to those who were hoping. And last but not the very least, the room to fear and tremble was none other than Lu Bu's, him standing comfortable and not wanting to leave his new friend, a gate guardian tiger head shooting fireballs out of his mouth! Thankfully defeating this nemesis beast was a trump card and another route to clearing the level, as Lu Bu did not have to be slain.

Well.. enough is enough... I hope you enjoyed the read, this was a thrilling game to play and I'm very glad I did spend some of my time on it. It's a must have for a PSP game, and I am trying to not say this with bias. So thanks again for reading this preview.

THANKS LDZ. this makes me feel far more interested in this game, as i've not been entirely convinced by what i've seen so far. you do an excellent job of reviewing by making your experiences descriptive yet not overly fantastic. you win.

Very interesting. I wish I could have played it. Can't wait for it to come out as I should have a PSP by that time.

Thanks, I've just summed what I've posted in various topics and put a little more detail in it. Its nothing special above, since its not a full review, but at least it can tell you a few things you probably never knew.

Wall. Of. Text.

But from what I gathered from it, it does get me interested in playing it. Ugh... I -better- get a PSP this Christmas from my boyfriend. Gr.

I never managed and don't think grabbles are in. Don't count on it.

And yes it was just the fighting in the demo.

Good. Throws were useless. I don't know what possessed them to replace Type Actions and Special Stance skills with lame throws that function exactly the same for each character (save for a few square throws that launched). That alone made the characters feel less unique than they did before, what with most of the added Renbu attacks being too difficult to use in an actual battle.

Also, the missing L2/R2 buttons means they had to make a cut somewhere.

Many will be impressed with this game. I didn't mention the graphics because there's been video's and thats how it is.

The combat style is pretty crazy. There's a lot of aerial action because of the high jumps and attacks in mid-air, so its all looking promising at the moment.

Yeah, I'm really excited for this game because they're finally moving the combat forward again, instead of dumbing it down to the point of it being no fun to play like DW6. I've never cared much for the story at all, so the (obvious) lack of focus on that doesn't bother me at all. Any word on the Japanese release date for this? I know the US date is set for March.

I guess I'll have to keep an eye out, then. I'll be posting videos as soon as I can, and I'll share them with KW, as usual.
