I was wondering if anyone here was a smoker or not

Also, what's your thoughts/opinions on the constant increae of tax on
cigarettes and smoking bans.

Even if you don't smoke feel free to contribute

Whats everyones opinion of the whole thing anyway?

Personnally, I'm not a big fan of the smoking ban in the UK, however I
no it benefits a huge majority of people and I'm just being selfish here

There's no real benefit to it

unless your tastebuds enjoy it

In which case you would have to try it to see.

I am really glad that they are trying to implement bans but it is really hard considering all of those who are addicted. With all of the drugs these days, I think normal tobacco isn't much to worry about. First, get rid of marijuana and everything else. Then focus on regular smoking.
And simply, I hate the smell.
My dad has smoked forever and finally started doing it outside. He's tried to quit but its hard for him and it is hard to watch him especially when he thinks he quits but ends up starting again. I just get worried about cancer and everything which is another reason I dislike it. The horrible ingredients and the diseases it causes. :(
Thanks to Jiahe for the brilliant sig!

Actually unlike marijuana (and cigs), alchohol isn't really bad for you. and the results are similar. That's why getting drunk is better than getting high

so I'm all for banning the useless mari and cigs. like I said, no real benefits, which you vaguely replied to.

I definitely have to agree with you. Get rid of the dope and cigs and keep the booze. Also lower the drinking age to 18.

Or move to Australia, where it already is legal to drink at 18! :P

Drinking Alcohol (in small amounts, particularly wine) in in fact proven to be good for you, I believe I've read/seen many times of Current Affair problems that two glasses of wine a day for example is really healthy.

Drinking is only a problem when done excessively obviously, but smoking has been proven to have no health benefits whatsoever. Although I have known some people choose to smoke as a substitute to wanting to eat as a means to lose weight.

Anyway, I've tried smoking before but didn't particularly like it, and I'm glad too, it can be a rather expensive addiction to have.

If you come to australia, tell me in advance, and I'll brew enough cider to make all of KW piss-drunk :P

I'm against smoking, mostly because my grandmother was a chain smoker who suffered lung cancer as a result >:

You from Australia too? GLP and I are too as our posts may suggest.

I can relate to that reason as well, my nan also passed away due to lung cancer, caused by smoking. Just months before she passed she said to me "I guess this is my punishment for smoking all my life". Man, that hit really hard and is more then enough for me to not consider it again.

I never had a hatred of smoking, or even smokers, until I went to Europe for a few months. Now, I loved Germany, but I felt... out of place. You could point out the American from a mile away on the U-Bahn because I'd be the only one that doesn't have a cigarette in my mouth or ready to pull one out. (I'm overexaggerating, really...)

No offense to any smokers, but I really don't want to be inhaling any of that junk. Killing yourself slowly is fine, just leave me out of it. And normally, I wouldn't find it hard to avoid it. Sometimes, though, there is simply no escape from it, and if you're going to have the lack of common courtesy to smoke in ENTRY ways to buildings, then deal with my bitter comments. I'm hurting your feelings, you're killing my lungs. Equal enough trade.

I'm a very, very bitter person, I find. And it's not just the whole 'second hand risk' that gets me- I'm allergic to smoke and I can't stand the smell of it. It's nasty. Nothing irritates me more than my grandmother going to a thrift store to get me hand-me-downs and they reek of smoke.

Amen. If you're going to smoke, you might as well end your life now. At least alcohol doesn't lead to death (unless you're an idiot and drink too much). Smoking, however... well it's about as useless as... no, it's the most useless thing I can think of in existence.

Laws in Australia actually prevent smoking within something like 5 meters from entrances of some public buildings actually. Where I do my part time study there are large ramp style entrances to the building, there it's also illegal to smoke on the ramp, let alone in the building.

Smoking Laws continue to get sticker and stricter over here, I think it's a good thing though. Do whatever you like in your private life, but keep it out of public is how I'd like it to be, and laws slowly but surely and moving in that direction.

A few folk here really seem to be against pot :S

And I can tottally understand that people would be tottally against smoking if it's destroyed a part of their family.

And the drinking law is the same in the UK, except Australia's probably better cause it's warmer (although theres more snakes)

There are similar laws in the state. No one is permitted to smoke within 25 feet of the building, however, the chances of someone listening to the new law is about the same as someone enforcing them. They still gather around the entrances and if you want to go into those buildings you have to suffer through a wall of smoke. Maybe I should go to class with a gas mask on... may be the only relief I'll get from it (except not go to class).

They got the ol' no smoking in resturants for NJ and PA. It works out for the better. I hate smokers that smoke way too much.

Also, forgive me, but I read somewhere (and its also brought up to little Ralphie Wiggum on the Simpsons cartoon) that people in Britain are known for their rotted teeth. Is this true? Or just a gag?

lol, Im sure that it was just a joke based perhaps on something remotely true, and has now been blow out into a comedy ruitine.

When I play cricket, well, half the team are over 20 years old, and whenever we all come off the field, around half of them start having a smoke :OMG: I cant see how smoking and excercise together can be good

Oh no it's entirely true, even though we get free health care and cheap dental care provided to everyone everyone has Tudor-style bad teeth.

Also, everyone in England says "Alreyet Guv'nah"

While in Scotland where I stay: every 2nd person is called Jock, everyone wears kilts and haggis run free everywhere

Ok, maybe I've taken this too far, to answer yer question truthfully, yes it's a gag based on 16-17th century when everyone just got introduced to sugar.

my eyes swell up and itch/burn for 24 hours after i get near the actual cigarette smoke. my ex smoked like a chimney, but i put him out, he was always very angry about it, but whatever. also i only have one lung due to Mono/Hep/Pneumonia in High School, so i cannot afford to get second-hand smoke.

i think it's very weak when folks say "...i can't help it, it's an addiction..." as if i should care that they cannot control their urges when it's detrimental to my health. i suppose i'm a bit bitter about it too. my mother died from Leukemia which was a direct result of smoking.

When I was very young, I remember sitting in my granny's lap while she smoked. A mosquito flew in through the window and she aimed a puff of smoke at it; and it fell down stone dead.

I never sat in her lap while she smoked again.

I'm allergic to cigarettes, when I am around them for too long I start to cough up blood. It's a weird reaction, but it happens. When I was a kid we stayed in a "non-smoking" hotel room once and it was obvious that someone had smoked in there before because the place reeked. Within two hours I was so sick I could barely move and had to be carried out. Over the years I have actually built up a fairly moderate tolerance level. At least I don't drop dead after I get a whiff of someone's smoke, but if it is blown directly on me I tend to get sick almost immediatley. But living in the city where everyone seems to have a cig in their mouth has given me a chronic cough that never goes away. Personally I wish all smokers would just die of lung cancer already and leave the rest of us the hell alone. ^_^

Sorry to hear that Foomin

I do think people are weak when they say "I can't help it" If they really want to quit they can but choose not to.... people nowadays give up too easily into temptation

I been bought up not to smoke as religion but I wouldn't do it anyway just shortening your life and wasting money IMO
