Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Genre: Stealth Action Console: PS3 Release Date: June 12th 2008 - Worldwide Official Website: http://www.konami.jp/mgs4/global/index.html Publisher/Developer: Konami/Kojima Productions Number of Players: 1 Offline, 16 Online Here we have Metal Gear Solid 4, one of the Playstation 3’s exclusive titles. Many fans and not-yet-to-be fans heavily anticipated the release for this game and it is finally out. Being a massive fan myself I had to get it on release day and after a sufficient amount of playthroughs, I’ve decided to share my thoughts on the game. New Features: MGS4 have come a long way since the original Metal Gear. And with each new game, new controls and new features are more often than not included. With this game come revised controls. It feels like a mix of FPS style and classic MGS controls. (R1 being the fire button for example). Also is the Octocamo. It’s basically an automatic and friendlier version of MGS3’s camouflaging system. All you have to do is lie on a surface for a few seconds and a sound will play, changing Snake’s camouflage to the background below. It’s really useful and probably one of the few things you must use if you attempt a go on the hardest difficulty. Story: 10/10 5 years since the events at the Plant from MGS2 and Snake has grown old for unknown reasons, and his body is starting to decay. In the meantime, Liquid Ocelot is planning to launch an insurrection against the Patriots. You start off in the Middle East looking for L. Ocelot... I could honestly say that it would make some of the stories of previous RPG games look bad. It’s presented through the various cutscenes throughout the game and indeed done, in style. For the MGS veterans, it ties up most of the holes of the Metal Gear Saga, and some of these could leave you going ZOMG. The only problem it has storywise is that it might leave newcomers to the MGS franchise confused to the story of the game. (not as much as MGS2 did). I can’t really say anything as even the smallest of things could be a spoiler for the game. It’s an amazing experience that’s best done while playing the game. Graphics: 10/10 If I only had two words to describe the Graphics of MGS4, it’s AMAZING and DETAILED. It has one of the best Graphics on a console game to date, and even better when watching the cutscenes. Not only does it have amazing graphics, but like I said, it’s really detailed. Every single thing in the game have been detailed. Like the strands in Snake’s hair or the textures of the floor, the guns itself. You could just watch in awe while your controller is down and stare at the screen in amazement. Sound: 10/10...11 perhaps? The soundtrack of this game is amazing. They really do feel in-tune with the location you are at so it makes the overall experience all the more better. The Alert theme is different for each section of the game and most of them are really spectacular in their own right that I tend to get alert mode just to hear them XD. The in-game iPod adds has tunes from the various games that Kojima-san have made throughout the years. Some of the better choices worth listening to are Beyond the Bounds, Zanzibar Breeze, Snake Eater, MGS Main Theme (Document Remix), Theme of Solid Snake, Forerunner, the MG 20th anniversary medley and the Big Boss theme (not to be confused with “The World Needs Only One Big Boss”). VA wise, I don’t have to say much, previous MGSs have set the standards high and this game has raised the bar even further. David Hayter did a splendid job once again a Snake, although I would say the best Voice Acting in the game would go to Patric Zimmerman for his role as Liquid Ocelot. He have done a great job as Revolver Ocelot in previous games, but in this, you could feel bits and pieces of Liquid Snake (Cam Clarke) integrated into the already amazing Ocelot voice which sums up the awesomeness that is Liquid Ocelot. I would have loved to hear more of Cam Clarke though ![]() The only gripe I have with the sounds of this game is that the 1st MGS Main Theme Motif (MGS1 and 2 main themes) does not appear in the game at all, even via the iPod which is arguably one of the most memorable tracks in all of Metal Gear but you can’t fault Kojima for not adding them since it has some copyright issues with another piece of music released years ago that has a similar motif. Gameplay: 9/10 It’s roughly a go from point A to point B kind of game, but there’s plenty of A.1s and A.5s along the way if you know what I mean. You could go off track and find some secret items every now and then or a longer, yet more effective route to go to point B. Also, you don’t necessarily have to play MGS4 as a Stealth game with the amount of weapons you’ll have on hand. Either be nice and go around without notifying anyone or just go head-on Rambo with your M60E4 and fell every single thing in the area. Also, when you are in Alert mode, or in the hot sun/cold blizzard, a stress rating starts increasing and slowly depletes your Psyche Gauge (having detrimental effects on Snake of course). Snake’s hand starts shaking and he might take a little extra damage with a high stress rating which adds to the realism of this game’s gameplay. Only thing I really don’t like is that was a little bit too short compared to the amount of cutscenes the game have. Online: 7.5/10 (or 8.5/10 if you’ve cash to spare) Okay so Metal Gear Online isn’t MGS4, but it’s included in the game as a starter pack and it’s an online game so I’ll take it as MGS4’s online. You start MGO by creating your own character (limited to 1 without paying for extras) and you have 5 maps to choose from, one being the fortress Groznyj Grad from MGS3 revamped to suit MGS4 of course. There are quite a few modes you can select, ranging from the regular Deathmatches and Team Deathmatches to MGS styled Sneaking missions. For the Sneaking Missions, two teams are pitched together to score the most kills and a third party, Snake and Metal Gear Mk.II will have to get 3 dog-tags from the two sides. Expansions add to the MGO experience with various special characters you can play as and the new modes they offer like Stealth Deathmatch for one. However, MGO is not without its faults. There seems to be lag sometimes when you respawn. Also, signing up can be a bit of a hassle as you need to register a Konami ID and a Game ID along with your PSN to get through. Replay Value: 7/10 (or 8/10 if you buy the MGO expansions) After completing MGS4 for the very first time, you’ll unlock a few Emblems, ranks according to how you played in the game and a few new items you can use for your future runs. There are some really challenging emblems to get like the aforementioned Big Boss rank which requires you to complete the game in 5 hours without killing, getting spotted, using health restoring items or dying once. Other than collecting all the emblems (which nets you the Snake Eater theme from MGS3) there’s MGO to keep you busy, or you could go through MGS4 to look for all the secrets like every other MGS game have done before. Overall: I could go on forever about MGS4 (as you can see from this) but it have to end eventually. If you have a PS3 or cash to spare to get one, go buy this game now. If you already know what happened, go buy it too XD. MGS4 is an amazing experience that’ll leave you amazed at the end of it (if it ends ever ). It might make you want even more MGS. It’s a one of a kind experience that you might never forget. Heck, I won’t ever. It’s one of the best games on the PS3 and also one of the best games released during this year. In my books, it would be the greatest game I have played though.... at least....until MGS5! Final Score: 10/10 Other notes: 1. The MGS4 demo is now available to all regions on the Playstation 3 Store. 2. Also, I may sound repetitive or just use the same words over and over again in the review as my written English is not one the best so I apologise in advance. I just feel that I had to review one of the better games I have played in the year and would love other PS3 owners to have a taste of MGS4.3. I’d love to thank Fayt, MegaXtreme and LittleDragonZ (in no particular order) for helping me with mhy review. Lastly, thank YOU for reading the review!

Another 1st time reviewer, I'm liking it! You've done a nice job with the review, it's individual to you, and is well categorized and has enough detail to give a real teaser about what it offers, nice work! Cam Clarke again..? Haha, that guy is everywhere! Otherwise though this is probably something I'll never get, I've got Wii, and I've got 360. It's unlikely I'll be adding a PS3 to my consoles as well... |

Not sure how I helped out, but no problem dude! Great review! I still need to find time to play this. I keep hearing it's excellent, I watched my brother play most of it, and it has a great story, so I guess once this semester ends, I'll have to try it out. All I know is Metal Gear Online is fun stuff. And yeah, great to see more and more people writing reviews. I love how the board is expanding. |

haha SOMEBODY stole my idea, lol. Just kiddin man. Seriously, im glad I wasnt the only one to write a review on this. This is such a solid game that I couldnt cover all aspects. I should have included online. Online, to me, was very easy. I caught on quick and was absolutely destroying people. Headshots galore. I loved th story, but thats an obvious point. It went beyond epic. |
