Cosplay Challenge 09 This is the event which One-Eyed-Dragon and I are preparing for, which will be held on 31 January 2009 at the Singapore Discovery Centre.More details can be found on the website itself. Anyway,we're both pretty nervous about the whole thing. The workshop isn't really helping much (I hate to say this, but they're really delaying everything - at this rate,we're going to do lots of last-minute work),most of the participants are experienced cosplayers,I'm a complete novice at sewing, and the performance part is really worrying me too.

I am sorry to hear that the workshops are not aiding you. I checked out the site and it seems more competitive than help-savvy for newcomer individuals like you. Do you have an idea of who you want to cosplay as? Also, are participants like yourself "locked in" to have to produce something after signing up? Don't be nervous!! Look at it more as an opportunity to assimilate more knowledge on cosplay and where you can also network with others to further increase your skills. I envy you. Honestly, I don't think I could ever sign up for anything like that. Aside from creating your outfit, are you getting pressure from anywhere else that might hinder your motivation to continue in this "challenge"? |

@Hanzo Hattori: Most of the participants are experienced,so they tend to be rather snobby towards us newbies. The workshop isn't really an ideal place to make lots of friends due to the arrogance of most of the participants.

Maybe you should go to workshops that are better suited for newcomers? Considering this is your first time cosplaying, you really can't expect to out do the veterans, and if they're not very willing to give helpful advice, you're probably wasting your time in that type of environment. My advice, is not rush. Attend a better workshop and convention when you can, and take it slow so you can put the most quality into your work. |

i'd say the prize money is too attractive, hence the competitiveness among the participants. but fret not kids, there're always more sources you can gain help from. just accept everything with an open mind, and do not be afraid to ask when in doubt(you're a newbie, you have all the reasons to be asking).

Yep yep! just ask the people around here bout anything. Its not about the prize money in the end, but the satisfaction that you've completed a costume and done a good job at it.

Manji: This workshop is really a bit of a first for Singapore...there are several sessions, each focusing on some aspect of cosplay, which culminate in the competitive event. Kitsune has pointed out the obvious flaw in this arrangement. To my knowledge there aren't any other publicized workshops at this point. The unfortunate fact is that our SW group has many members that operate outside the usual community of cosplayers in Singapore due to dissatisfaction with the sort of snobbish attitudes held by quite a few of the 'elite' cosplayers and the resulting politics. I came into the cosplay hobby with experience in making other crafts under my belt and so I had it easy, in a way. But in the beginning, I faced the same kind of thing Kitsune and One Eyed Dragon are dealing with now and know what they mean. Kitsune and O.E.D: Attend the workshops, but take pride in what you can accomplish for yourself. How was your meeting with Zero? ![]() |

@Manji: There aren't any other workshops in Singapore right now,so we're stuck with CosplayChallenge. We have no choice but to try to rush everything now.@Greenzaku: The workshops seem to be delaying everything,so we might skip one or two workshops to work on our costumes and props, but we'll still attend the majority of the sessions (Time is not on our side). Our meeting with Zero was pretty fun,I didn't think he'd be that tall though. @Zero: You wish. @Acktosh & Nutella: I'm afraid we'll have to rely on you guys a lot for help from now on.

I'm just glad Greenzaku, Achtosh, and Nutella are here to help you out, really, all of their suggestions and advice have been wonderful! Thanks for helping this little cosplay community grow, it's so nice to see that this sub-forum has gained the attention of so many cosplayers who are willing to help each other out. That's really what the aim of this forum has been, and I'm so glad to see it work so successfully. ![]() But I digress... Best of luck to you Kitsune and One Eye Dragon. Even if you aren't able to finish your costumes for this convention, there is always the next one, yes?

Greenzaku,Acktosh,Nutella,Cyrus and Zero have been helping us,I don't know what we'll do without them. I'm not sure if the instructors will be happy with us not being able to finish the costumes in time,we have to do a performance on the day of the event (it's compulsory,I believe ). Lots of pressure...

Aiya. Chill, relax, breath in, breath out. If you felt pressured, there is a chance where mistakes will arise, which will leads to more consumption of precious time. D: So relax and keep a clear head when you do your props. xD |

@Zero: It's hard not to feel pressured when you have things to do in a rush and your father's going, "Why the hell did you even join CosplayChallenge in the first place? It's useless." I'll try to relax, but it's going to be difficult to do so.I think OED's more stressed out than me,he has more things to do for his costume. @Crimsondramon: Thanks! Come support us on 31 Jan,okay?

Kitsune and O.E.D: I am wondering...if the workshops are being quite useless, is it possible for you to withdraw from the remainder of them and claim some of your money back as refund? That will also ease the pressure of needing to rush so much. There will be plenty of events after 31 Jan; many of them competitive, if you want to try for a prize. SoY (Start of Year) event is on the SAME day as the cosplay challenge, and its probably the third biggest event - the top two are EoY and Cosfest. Its also FREE ENTRY and held at Ngee Ann Poly. My impression of SoY is that its really newbie-friendly as its held in a school, also quite easy-going. If you feel you really want to drop the workshop altogether, or cannot finish in time, go there instead and save your $$$. Besides, if the snobbish elite cosplayers are slugging it out at the cosplay challenge, they're less likely to be at SoY too

@Greenzaku: I don't think that's possible. If it can be done,I'll claim some of my money back to use on my cosplay. It's not really the prize we're after, the main reason why we're cosplaying is because we really wanted to try cosplaying. It's something we wanted to do for some time, and cosplay is indeed fun. |

Go for it then...:) If you aren't concerned about being competitive, then it means you aren't really limited to the cosplay challenge at all If you go at a pace that is comfortable, then no matter what I'm sure you'll do well.

I honestly feel that the schedule of the workshop is too fast. Most cosplayers do their stuff over months or even years. However, I joined this workshop to learn skills about cosplay and so on... ... I have my set of morals and principles, therefore I would want to finish what I started ( the workshop ). By the way, thank you everyone for pointing out so many details of the costume that I've missed. |

The wood I have is super thin ( oh shi* ), will show you on Sat. Opened a fan, the spokes are really held by the paper and glued at REGULAR intervals. By the way, Mitsunari's love is sexy?! |

@OED: No drill? o.O If the wood is soft, you can just carve out the hole using the screw, though it won't be regular. But its worth a try. Or you could just borrow from others. ^^;; I'll look forward to the fan!!! |
