The Australian government is trying to implement a compulsory internet filter in an effort to eradicate peer-to-peer networks and kiddie porn. There has been some controversy surrounding this from human rights groups and privacy advocates. Not only will it slow down Australia's internet (moreso) but there is potential for the government to use the filter for political reasons. So what do you think? Can filters work? Does it cross the line or is it a necessary measure in fighting piracy and child pornography? |

Well, filters work, and I don't think that they "cross the line" in anyway because the filter serves as a preventative measure. Also, the filters could be set up without slowing down broadband speed, or at least I think so |

noooooooo~ this idea is rubbish! I don't wanna be sitting at the pc waiting an hour for a page to lead just because of some crappy filter which was instaled because the government is paranoid. besides, people wil find ways to crack the filter. Or someone wil be assassinated by an angry online RPG'r(s). Either way's possible :S |

The internet filters that the school that I go to uses...its so damn annoying, theyre blocked pretty much everything, for art, I had to look up fear and violence in art, but even that was blocked, is so bad that its close to impossible to do any school work on those computers

Haha, yeah. If you search for anything on Google images, it gets blocked and it says "Reason: pornography". I tried everything, even searching for "Everything that is NOT pornography". I don't know if any assumptions are being made on the basis that the school is an all boys school KW is also blocked for "provocative attire"

I am a proud advocate against Child Pornography, pedophilia in general, but I don't believe that we should actually filter out everything on the internet because of it. Instead of trying to eliminating Child Pornography, you should be trying to eliminate pedophilia in general. If there are no more pedophiles, how can there be child pornography? I'd consider a scanner on the internet searching web pages for key phrases to link to possible child pornography sites, after reviewing them if there is illegal activity get rid of it. If not move on. It's an invasion of privacy either way, and I'd prefer the scanner. |
