Fireworks are fun when the person setting them off has no idea what they're doing.

Oh, and I hate when parents put their kids on leashes. :kurokan:

Fact or Fiction: Carrots and You

It is National Nutrition Month, so I wanted to highlight one of my favorite veggies – the humble yet versatile carrot. There are some lingering myths about this orange vegetable, or are they myths. Take this short quiz and see if you know what is fact and what is fiction when it comes to carrots.

Question 1: T/F: If you eat too many carrots your skin can turn a yellowish orange.
You answered correctly: True
You may have seen this condition on an episode of Scrubs, and even though many medical TV shows can get the medical facts wrong, carotenemia is a real condition. It is a discoloration of the skin when excess beta-carotene builds up in the blood, from eating carotenoid-rich foods such as carrots, sweet potatoes, or oranges. The skin turns a yellowish color and can often be mistaken for jaundice.

Question 2: T/F: If you eat enough carrots you won't need glasses.
You answered correctly: False
Your mom was right when she told you to eat your carrots to make your eyes stronger, but carrots will not correct your vision, liberating you from the annoyance of contacts and eyeglasses. Carrots cannot reverse poor vision, strengthen eyesight, or slow the age related decline of vision in people who are healthy. What they can do for you is help protect your night vision due to their high content of beta-carotene.

Your liver converts the beta-carotene in carrots into vitamin A, which travels to your retina. There, the vitamin A is transformed into rhodopsin, a purple pigment necessary for night-vision. Cool, huh?

Question 3: T/F: Carrots are high in sugar and should be avoided when dieting.
You answered correctly: False
There is no need to give up carrots if you are dieting. While they do contain complex carbohydrates and some simple sugars, they contain fiber and some protein and a cup of raw carrots contains only 50 calories. Plus they are high in vitamins and minerals and carrots are part of a healthy diet.
