I don't tell people irl outside of my family what I listen to, mostly because it never becomes a subject of conversation so I have no reason to bring it up.
This. Except for my best friend.

Never restrict myself to certain genres. If you sound good to me and your lyrics mean something, even in a language I do not fully understand, then you are a song I am going to listen to and love. :innocent:

@Fraulein- I usually don't unless directly asked. Mostly just because I know most of the time I get a "What's that???" and then after I explain I get the "Why???" treatment. :ph43r:

@Itachi-danna- :ph43r: Agree with that completely. There are a few genres I haven't particularly found a lot i love as much in yet but for the most part I really try not to only limit myself to liking one genre.

I'll admit, I've never had to have lyrics be meaningful. It just has to sound good to me :innocent:

Of course if they are good lyrics thats only a plus. :ph43r:

IRL/Outside of online (and even online it's a lot less lately) I actually have the same problem. Aside from the fact that anyone that knows me long enough usually learns to like GACKT eventually, all the other stuff I listen too is just me by my lonesome. :ph43r:

I don't particularly mind though. I can be content enough just loving it myself and would rather people just like or listen to what they like then trying to just like something because I do just to make me feel better and I would always hope people feel the same about me. :ph43r:
Usually it doesn't bother me too much, and I certainly would never change my own taste or anything, it's just that I wish I had friends with more in common in the music department, since as a musician I have the need to really discuss music more in depth, and fanboy once in awhile, but usually I can't as no one I know have even heard of the artist/band. Become even more of an issue recently when digging deep into the electronica genres.

And whenever I heard someone say "I listen to everything except *insert 2-3 genres* I cannot help but to think "I could easily extend that list without even trying hard"

I don't think listening or not listening to any type of music makes anyone any better or worse than anyone else.

Let me listen to what I like; you can listen to what you like.

I'm just saying those are the only genres I specifically don't listen to. Like I'm not open to listening to them, where as the other ones that I don't listen to, I'm just not listening because I'm listening to other music, not by choice.. :ph43r:

I know, and I still could most likely extend that list easily  I've ventured deep into the swamps of subgenres, I could easily dig out stuff you've probably never heard of, and that you probably wouldn't understand  Most people don't as they are quite.... unique

It's actually something that I agree with Itachi on. Lyrics are rather important to me and a lot of what can turn me off of some bigger genres I don't listen to or get into as much is that I just can't feel the lyrics or they are way too straightforward and are harder for me to take deeply enough. :kurokan:

Unless it's in the case of classical or instrumentals. There are indeed plenty of musicians that can put just as much if not more feeling and emotion into a song without any vocals or lyrics at all.

I guess it would be easiest to say I don't exactly need good lyrics but I can't handle too simple or poorly written ones. If that makes sense. :ph43r:

@Fraulein- :beard: :heart: YES!!!

@TrasH I understand, but I guess I'm mostly referring to the more common genres.

@Ce I'm the same when it comes to specific genres. When it comes to rock music and other music of that direction, I do look for more emotional songs that have great lyrics and help me feel it, where as with pop and genres heading that way, I'm more just looking for a fun song thats just to listen to.

 It makes for messy playlists and completely awkward emotional rollercoasters. And even then you will not get the "how the hell do you listen to this" from the people people. But who cares? I listen to what I like. :beard:

But aside from music. Itachi is a complete movies noob. :innocent:

I've only ever gotten questioned for my music tastes by my brother when he was listening to all the Japanese music on my thing.

I wanted to say, "well buy your own thing if you don't like it", but I just smiled and nodded.

One reason I can never says I stick more to or opposed to a specific genre is that to me nothing it better, no matter what genre or style, than when a band or song focuses on everything being equally important. Not just some amazing vocals with a cheap drum box in the background, or a beautiful guitar track with amazing drums while the bass is just slapping the same 2 notes like a metronome or when a rock band has a beautiful and nearly flawless mix of music all around but than the vocalist sounds like he just was thrown in to fill up space.

And I don't mean just everything showing off either. You can for example be the fastest drummer around but not be as good as one with less technical "skill" to me if that "lesser" drummer is still better at making their part fit together with the song well enough rather than just throwing it in like you are showing off. :ph43r:

@Fraulein- I get it all the time sadly but usually I just throw back technical stuff against something they listen to and tell them to shut it and leave me alone. :innocent:

Sometimes I could care less about the lyrics, and often listen to songs I do not get a single word of, while in other cases, the lyrics really bother me, quite weird.

And my more not so easy listened genres usually bring out comments like "How can you listen to this crap?" and "This isn't even music!"

@Gai: Most people who say that haven't heard about too many non-common music genres, which is why I easily could make them twice as long, not sure why I can't stop thinking about that whenever I hear someone say it

I couldn't agree more! Nothing is worse than when a band just grams like a 3 minute over the top guitar solo in there while giving the rest a basic beat that's nothing special. It's so important for everything to be equally good all around.

Why do Child Protective Services Theme Song have to be so short D: Have to listen to it at least three times to be satisfied, and at that point it's so hard to stop as it's one of the most catchy songs ever >_< To me at least that listen to that kind of stuff
