http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090106/ap_on_re_us/odd_boy_driver Basically, this boy missed his bus and decided to take the family car while his mom was asleep and drive himself there. He ended up crashing several miles away with minor injuries and started walking to school after getting out of the car. The boy later told authorities that he learned how to drive from playing Grand Theft Auto and Monster Truck Jam. His parents are now charged with child endangerment. I thought this was pretty funny when I first heard about it, but this would definitely be no laughing matter if the boy had gotten seriously hurt or killed. |

It's not really that funny. The parents were so cruel to the kid. His response to why he was trying to get to school was because he "didn't want to miss Breakfast." His parents don't feed him. |

I think something similar happened like this a while back, but a kid was a bit older. And once again, fingers will be pointing towards violent videogames like GTA. There's just no end to it... |

Honestly, who lets their 6 year old play GTA? thats just ridiculous. And obviously since his parents were asleep, means that he had to depend on himself to get up and get ready and be at the bus on time, what type of parents do that to a child at that age? I never was independent to get myself up till I was able to drive. |

Oh crap, here we go again, problems blamed on VG's. And I agree, what kind of lazy, no brained, irresponsible parent lets their kid play GTA? |

I don't think it's that terrible of a thing to not wake up your child for school... It really all comes down to how disciplined the child is. If the child is able to get up every morning to get to the bus on time, then I don't see why the parents would need to bother with anything with him/her in the morning unless it was really necessary for the parents to get involved {such as taking them to a doctor appointment, helping them if the have some sort of handicap, etc}. Though in this case, I think the parents were severely inattentive of him when he got away with this. |

To think, this boy was probably too scared to wake up his mom for a ride to school, so he had to resort to driving himself. That's what I think is just awful. Some parents are complete pricks about it when their children accidentally sleep in and miss the bus for school. I kinda know what must have been going through his head. When I used to miss the bus, my step-dad would always throw the worst fit, even though he had plenty of time in the morning to drive us. Anyway, one time my brother and I missed the bus one day, so we decided to walk (about 3 miles atleast) in order to avoid his wrath. Luckily though, a kind neighbor saw us and gave us a lift. So I honestly don't blame him for trying, if he was dealing with a similar case. Especially since he's so young, when you're that young, you dread ever having to confront your parents, you try almost anything to avoid them when you slip up. Well actually the only reason this kid wanted to drive to school was because of breakfast. Where he lives, the schools provide free lunch and breakfast to poor families. His parents were not feeding him and it was the only way he could eat by going to school. The driving part is just secondary and really isn't the important matter although he is only 6 and managed to drive. |

Oh I see... it still could have been a factor. Either way, it just goes to show what lousy parents he has to deal with. |

well this is something I actually heard about before reading here well I know driving isn't the best way, but at least the kid was smart enough to use whatever driving knowledge he had to attempt driving one in real life, even though GTA driving is nothing like real life (which actually impresses me more). Then again in these situations childhood is forfeited early in order to survive ![]() @Drew: fair enough, but the kid's only six. I know when I was that age my mum would wake me up if I was late - and those days I wasn't allowed to stay up late, sometimes I just needed more z's, like everyone sometimes

wtf does GTA have to do with learning driving? You just press a freaking button or two. Just go on and blame video games randomly, that's the way to go! |

Actually no one is blaming it, it was the kid himself who said that he learned to drive from GTA. In which he succeeded by crashing, which is exactly what happens in the game. Just think of how good a pilot this kid would be if he played Flight Simulator

This boy to me somehow seems confident on himself. When he was driving he somehow I think remembered all of the moments in GTA when he was driving. Parents should look out for buying games for their children. |

Considering the details I seem to be hearing that surround this case, this is about as close as you can get to a "bad parenting" situation. Too bad Rockstar is still going to get flak for this. |

hmm does GTA realy tought u how to handle handbrakes or something?, they can't realy blame games, nw games has age restict, even DW has a 12 yr old restict, last time they don't, i can still remember 7 yr olds playing at cypercafes on DW3 where they ownself unlock lu bu and everything, wow surprised me that nw kids are very cleaver the kid was maybe scared to wake his mother, or his mother is stict, so he drive the car, i am jus wondering hw the car goes when driving on the road haha if he realy able to drive car by playing GTA, what if there is a game that teaches u hw to handle brakes and gears? and what if he play initial D or maximum tune also, expert driver better than teens and adults? |

First of all, kudos to that kid for at least WANTING to get to school in the first place, even if it was just to have breakfast. Best kid ever. More children need to be this willing to go to school! Secondly, though, bad parents. Letting their 6 year old boy starve and play games like Grand Theft Auto... shame on you. They should have their parenting license revoked. Good the parents were charged! |
