I´m asking this cause, DW:G2 looks very good. I played the first one, but couldn´t get into it. All those characters and relationships... And for the second, since it comes out late march, I want to get some knowledge about the backround, since Gundam is an interesting franchise. But I mean look at that: * Mobile Suit Gundam (also known as the "First Gundam", it is the nickname used by Japanese fans, once sequels appeared. "Gundam 0079" has also been established for use, as a nickname derived from its spinoff manga and games used by the international community.) o TV: 1979 - 1980 o Compilation movies: 1981 - 1982 * Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam o TV: 1985 - 1986 o Compilation movies: 2004 - 2006 * Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ o TV: 1986 - 1987 * Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack o Movie: 1988 * Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket o OVAs: 1989 * Super Deformed Gundam o Movie: 1988 - 1989, 1991, 1993 o OVAs: 1988, 1990 o TV: 1993 * Mobile Suit Gundam F91 o Movie: 1991 * Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory o OVAs: 1991 o Compilation movie: 1992 * Mobile Suit Victory Gundam o TV: 1993 * Mobile Fighter G Gundam o TV: 1994 * Mobile Suit Gundam Wing o TV: 1995 o Compilation OVAs: 1996 * Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team o OVAs: 1996 o Compilation movie: 1998 * After War Gundam X o TV: 1996 * New Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz o OVAs: 1997 o Compilation movie: 1998 * Turn A Gundam o TV: 1999 - 2000 o Compilation movies: 2002 * Gundam the Ride: A Baoa Qu o Amusement park attraction movie: 2000 * G-Saviour o Live action TV movie: 2000 * Gundam Neo Experience 0087: Green Divers o Specialty format movie: 2001 * Gundam Evolve o Short films: 2001 - 2005 * Mobile Suit Gundam SEED o TV: 2002 - 2003 o Compilation specials: 2004 * Superior Defender Gundam Force o TV: 2003 - 2004 * Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO o Movies: 2004 o OVAs: 2006 * Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny o TV: 2004 - 2005 o Compilation specials: 2006 - 2007 * Mobile Suit Gundam SEED C.E. 73: Stargazer o ONAs: 2006 * Mobile Suit Gundam 00 o TV: 2007 - 2008 o TV(Second Season): 2008 - 2009 * Mobile Suit Gundam SEED: The Movie o Movie: To be announced So I need help, which of those do I REALLY have to watch, to understand at least the most important parts? For Metal Gear Solid 4, of course you had to play every MGS to fully understand it, but most of the part you only needed 1&3 to get most of it. A friend of mine only played MGS3 and understood allmost everything. So what´s the most important "season/s"? |

If you really need to understand the context of the DW:G games, then I'd recommend, in order: Mobile Suit Gundam - either the series or the compilation movies, I'm inclined towards the movies Zeta Gundam - either the series or the movies, though most people will say the series ZZ Gundam Char's Counter Attack Gundam F91 Victory Gundam That's only in terms of the UC series. I suppose you're free to leave out F91 and Victory Gundam since neither of those two have been as fleshed out as MSG/Z/ZZ/CCA. For the AU series, I would watch in any order (even before UC if you want): G Gundam Gundam Wing Once you've watched all of the above, I would end with Turn-A Gundam. I am... hesitant to tell you to watch SEED. While the first series is passable, SEED Destiny is... well, I'm simply not a fan of it for a very serious variety of reasons, and you'd have to watch both for GM2/DW:G2 since it includes Mobile Suits from only SEED Destiny. If you want a proper opinion of it, I'd wait for someone who is more willing to explain. Edited by Shokatshin, Jan 26 2009, 11:16 PM.

You only have to watch the original First Gundam, then Zeta (try and watch the movies of these two series, much easier than 100 episodes), Double Zeta, and the movie Char's Counterattack. Possibly Seed Destiny too. I've seen little of Wing and barely anything of G Gundam and Turn A, but because they use only 2 characters from those 3 series there's no point in wasting so much time. |

Remember a key thing is not every single aspect of those series are brought into the game...... for example the main focus for this game in story wise is the UC universe titles..... which Shokatshin has nicely listed for you...... and even at that they didn't really go into it as much..... but they did use a vast amount of mobile suits you can pilot from those series.......... Personally it just makes things more enjoyable if you have some background behind it which is why I commend you DevilsKing for wanting to watch some of the series to build more interest and fun for it...... I can't say you'll like all the series..... and i have no clue at the moment how much are you into mecha anime.... but generally most of the Gundam series involves some kind of conflict of war between different factions........and of course using awesome mobile suits to battle..... to each their own though and what they think is better than the other.... If you do happen to watch from the older series to the new you'll begin to see the progression of the Animation quality..... and at times you'll also see when they company was having a lower budget .... |

I watched the original series, on...well, on TV When I was younger. Back then I really liked it, but I started watching in the middle and didn´t get what they were talking about I thought they would re-start it, but it was a one-time run...sadly. Instead they showed Beyblade, if I remember right I do remember the guy with the mask...he was interesting. Well I´ll start with the Mobile Suit Gundam movie(if I want more details I can still watch the series) Maybe I will finally know his name ....not just the guy with the mask |

here's a tip if you watch turn A AFTER you watched most of the behind it(including X) you will know that "Turn a Gundam"(is a sentence like "turn a car") is really the concept of the anime its like they mixed all of the concept of the past animes into one, spin it in a can,but its not a remake gone haywire(unlike SEED),it has many UC tributes,it has a tribute to G gundam, gundam W,and even X(the MS excavating/"vultures" concept) so i suggest watching all of the series before it so when you actually saw turn A gundam you will get ooh and ahhs when you see the neat tributes&jokes>.<,that's the best way to enjoy it IMO,watching it without prior knowledge of previous series will just raise your eyebrows.................. |

Definitely start at 0079/First Gundam. I'd recommend the anime, not the movies, since the English voicing is done better and it doesn't leave out important parts (such as a certain Vase-obsessed person) and it is worth the longer watching time. As for Zeta Gundam, it's my favorite series, try watching it in English because it's just amazing. The movies haven't been dubbed yet, but the liscencing has been finished, and it might start sometime soon. That being said, it's probably the best show in the series, and starts many numerous trends (such as the new mobile suit halfway through the series. Gundam ZZ: It's hard for me to watch this show. It's hard to explain. It's never been dubbed, most subs are terrible, and feels very unlike a Gundam show. I can't give an opinion, but what I have seen is good, just not as good as the others (addicted to the other shows). G Gundam: Feels like a bad Dragon Ball (not Z or GT) rip off, mixed with Gundams. Wing: Really..odd. Very action packed and good voices in both JP and ENG, although the ENG sounds so much better. The story is good, but I'd recommend the UC stories first. Seed: Don't bother with it unless you've found yourself unable to watch the older Gundam shows (or if you've already seen them). Very similar to 0079. Seed Destiny: The continuation to Seed. If Seed is 0079, then this is it's "Zeta Gundam" sequel. 00: Amazing. It's still airing, but it's almost done. It's very post-9/11, and feels very modern, despite being in our *near* future. |

I agree with Sho. These are the stories featured, and the most important would be the first four listed, being as they're the core of the Official missions. I, likewise, am a little hesitant to recommend SEED or SEED Destiny, for similar quality reasons. I'd also recommend, just on a personal enjoyment basis, flipping through Crossbone Gundam, which has been fan-translated fairly well. It's a direct sequel, more or less, to Gundam F91, which is nice (Gundam F91 itself was cut from a full series into a single movie, and so feels very compressed while you're watching it - with the addition of Crossbone Gundam, it really works much better, serving as an excellent prequel to the Crossbone series.) To be fair, I'm a big fan of Seabook and Cecily so my views might be slightly tinted, but from what I understand Crossbone is pretty universally liked. |

While it isn't exactly widespread praise, I've never heard a single bad thing about Crossbone, myself. Though I haven't read it, AFAIK it's such a good work that it seems like it'd help people appreciate Seabook/Kincaide and Cecily's appearances in GM2/DW:G2. |

I was never one for mecha stuff before Zone of the Enders: in anime, they were always invincible to everything except each other, which was too far outside my suspense of disbelief; in games they tended to be tedious and never captured the energy they showed in the movie-clips or outside media. Zone of the Enders changed all that. Anyway, I like music from the Gundam series (a friend of mine is a series fan and collects soundtracks), and I've been looking for another good game to add to my library and noticed this one. How do these games compare to ZoE 1&2? Are there 'better' alternatives (either region-free PS3 or region 1 PS2)? |

if you like ZOE this MIGHT not suitable for you, this is a ground hack & slash game just like any dynasty warriors/musou game, try googling/youtoube/gamefaqs search for A.C.E(another century episode) 1,2&3,its like ZOE,but with gundams and several other famous robot shows, such as macross, eureka seven, dunbine, etc. |

I've seen that it's more vertically restrictive than ZoE, with less distance combat, but the gameplay looks fairly nice and I don't have the capability to play region 2 (Japanese) games (otherwise I'd be playing ACE and Front Mission 5 right now). Other than the region block, though, it seems that both this and ACE are crossovers that don't require intensive knowledge about any of the background universes to enjoy them. Thanks |
