Well, I've just finished the basic performances for my two cosplay performances and I was wondering how everyone else thinks of what you are going to do on the stage? Do you try to tell a story/a scene? Do you try to amuse the audience? Are you trying to project a good in-character-image or do you often portray the character out-of-character? How do you think of the performance? Coincidence? Or do you choose a character to cosplay just after haivng worked out a performance? Note: I've heard that in some countries a cosplay competition only includes checking out the costume, but in Germany, you also have to put up some sort of act. I'd also be interested to read what other's have done, so if anyone wishes to post a video or script, I'd be very interested in it. I majorly do single-cosplay, as I rarely find a partner in my area that I can try out the performance with at least once or twice. In a way I suppose I also prefer to be independant when actually competending, because the last time I was going to do a 'group cosplay' in the sense of a three-people-group one chickend out a week before the con and the other got sick two days before... |

Well I think it has a lot to do with the competition rules wether it would be trying to strike a similar pose, or do a scene. I personally would always try to be as close to the character's personality while performing as possible. For just showing off the costume I would try to pick fun and familiar poses people would recognize as iconic and appreciate, and maybe one lesser known pose for hardcore fans. For a performance it gets harder. One of my dreams is to cosplay Celes Cher's opera dress from FF6 and sing the Aria from the operate in Italian (which I believe Uematsu wrote it in FIRST and then translated into Japanese but I could easily be wrong on this) so for that, obviously the song is a good solo-performance. Anime characters and some game characters get good 'speeches' you could memorize and fighting-type characters like DW and SW could do katas with their weapons and some of their famous lines. With multiple people you have a better opportunity for humor in skits, or reproducing famous moments. I think the only time I'd go OOC is for like...crazy dance number performances. |

I've been on stage TWICE and both times I've botched it. My Umbridge performance botched by my stuttering and I don't want to talk about my Wufei. Dx My cosplay decisions have always been on-the-fly. So when it comes to being the character off-stage is easy enough since you don't need to be in character all the time. Once on stage though that's a different thing. |

At the events I have attended the time on stage is quite short, usually 3 minutes max even as a group as the demand for places is so great. Basically you can only really do a 'walk on' and pose or a very short 'skit'. I personally prefere to go on the stage in character and do some poses, I will be doing this at my next event (hopefully with a partner to pose with) because to be honest I wouldn't like to see an out of character portrail of the character I am cosplaying. BUt that is not to say that a well thought out funny skit with KOEI cosplayers wouldn't be great to watch just don't think I would make a good job of it myself and not as LU BU. I would so love to get the chance to put together a stage show like I have seen on You Tube like in China and Japan, they are so awesome but as I said the events I go to would not allow us to have a 15 minute spot on stage. @Nutella: Apparently on the cons I'll be attending you are allowd to give a record for your performance. Originally I thought only background music is allowed, however just recently it was brought to my attention that you can record your whole "speech" on it. You just need to practise your movement first, as you'll need to time your speaking with your acting. I'm going to try that out in the middle of march. If it works, I might just do records to all of my performances, so I won't botch it up with stuttering, confusing words and all that... I'll put up my script for my planed Taigong Wang performance soon. I might change and adjust one thing or another until the date I record it, but the basics should remain the same. |

That's handy they let you record speech in advance as well, then if you're just going to say like....some of Taigong Wang's lines (or his little speech from the end of the Orochi story) you can even have things in 'his' voice. Which is pretty cool. I'll have to keep that in mind. |

That is better but doesn't give an even playing field, especially if the person is a good video editor! XD I imagine those who pre-record your performance is under a different category? This reminds me of the Darth Vader cosplayer that went up on stage. He had the Height, the build, the wheezing... when he went to introduce himself... he used his own SQUEAKY voice dangit! Things like this can only happen on impromptu performances...

One is only allowed to record the speeches and music. Also, if you do record it still has to be spoken by the performer. Aside from that due to Warriors Orochi 2 not being synchroned in german (which is something I'm really greatful for) i couldn't use his lines from the game. The performance requested here is also supposed to be a scene - either out of the game or an original one - thought I do believe original created ones are rated higher. |
