I was just using my computer casually when suddenly it restarted. It booted up normally until instead of the XP logo coming up, this came up:

Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and a key

After that happened, I restarted it a number of times and nothing. So I left it off for a few minutes.

After about 10 minutes and pouring over an outdated PC for Dummies, I turned it on again. To my surprise, the XP logo came up and did the disc check, and it restarted again. This time, the XP logo did come up and my desktop appeared as if nothing happened.

What...the hell happened awhile ago? I'm relived that my PC didn't crash, but a problem like this never happened before. Even more surprising is the fact that for some reason I was able to get the thing running again.

Sounds like you are having some Disk Boot Failure....could be a number of reasons... physical problems is a lose wire..... or the hard disk is failing.... that's the worst case scenario...meaning time to switch out HD and try to save things over to another device in case it really is failing....

other things is BIOS with a system called S.M.A.R.T (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) drive reporting. People often like to disable this for it's something quite old it's suppose to be a false safety to detect if the hard drive is having some error of the sorts....you can turn this off while in bios....

Also in the bios make sure your drive is being recognized properly...a method to check on this is restoring everything to default... within the bios that is.... usually there is an option for this in the bios....after in which save the changes and restart computer.... it should detect....the drive if nothing is going wrong...

Did you accidentally press F12 while it was starting up?

Well Musou if you noticed Xalfrea said he restarted multiple amount of times I doubt he is pressing F12 each and every time... O_O; so what I presume to be his issue is definately a Disk boot Failure.....

the tall tell signs of a disk failing is when you need to reboot a lot.... hopefully things aren't that bad if it is then it really is time to swap out the HD for a new one....and from the message he got is often something which is a sign of HD failing detected.... based upon what I've posted above.

To be honest, I never really do need to reboot a lot. This is the only time it happened. Normally I just run my PC fine.

But I'm still wondering why I was able to get it to run eventually. Otherwise, I wouldn't have typed this help topic.

So I just gotta change my HD then?

In the worst case scenario that is what you got to do Xalfrea...because this really does sound like it's going to fail.... playing it safe is always the best so try to transfer all your stuff that you can salvage that you want to keep.... obviously the harsh things about HD's is redoing all the Programs and codecs and what nots later.... you can only pretty much save data.....

By hearing you say that this hasn't ever occured makes me feel that it is something that tested the state of time.... my hd actually failed me after about 10 years worth of time.... typically the avg length of hd lasting time with hardcore usuage will last you 5 years.
That's what most labels on HD's say as manufacturers guarantee to work 5 years... I dont' want to get too technical about why the HD fails but mostly it's about magnetic fields slowly dissappearing on the HD's surface..making the disc harder and harder to read.

So... this is pretty much a normal problem then? Not a virus problem or anything?

It seems easy I guess, I can just put all my data in a zip folder and on a CD or something.

Yeah Xalfrea it is a normal issue that occurs with HD's normally these newer HD's at times aren't built to last in comparison to the older ones hence why the 5 year manufacturers guarantee nowadays..... any ways you should be back into good shape....after the switch as precaution though... personally I would highly recommend this change... i'd hate to lose something which I can still salvage for the time being or lets say you are working on something with the old hd and then all of a sudden it really does die..... that would be a big bummer.

I don't think you got a Virus issue doesn't seem like it...definately sounds more like a sign of Disk Boot Failure. How long have you had the computer for?
Another thing I mentioned earlier is could be lose wires too it's good to kinda check but if you had this computer for sometime it does make much more sense that the HD could possibly be failing.....

The thing is, when I look back, I've had this computer and hard drive for only 2 1/2 years.

The only conclusions I can think of:

A. Over using the computer
B. Too much stuff on the hard drive

At the moment, I'm typing from my friend's PC. I haven't turned on the failing PC since last night, and I'm not too sure if my data can be backed up now because last night it restarted itself twice in a row. I'm just too paranoid to turn on the PC again, anymore turning it on and I fear the thing will give out completely.

Give EasyBCD a try. It rewrites corrupted boot sectors on your HDD.

Also, make certain that you remove any USB Flash Drives from your machine. Because sometimes computers will attempt to boot from them instead of your HDD.
