Well, what do you mean by "cannibal"? Who have he eaten?!

This only happens in the fictional novel.

I mean, I do agree with you that Cao Cao was politically more accomplished and was a better warlord. I just mean that Liu Bei was more moral as a person (which isn't saying much; everybody in those times was a **** because if you weren't you lost your land/life like Liu Yu/Han Fu did).

K, story goes that Liu Bei and his sworn bros are coming through a small little village. One of the villagers recognizes them and invites them to stay at his house, forgetting he has no food to serve them. So, he ends up killing his wife (and kids, I think?) and making Liu Bei and friends human stew basically. Liu Bei says the food was delicious and asks what it was. The guy freaks out but tells the truth, ready to be executed. Instead Liu Bei laughs and says that the man is respectable for caring more about serving guests properly than "keeping" his wife.

This, mind you, is supposed to be a tale of Liu Bei's virtuousness. I just... yeah... Think it tells you what a lot of Chinese men of the time thought of women and non-adult males....

bros b4 hos is literally a central message of the novel and kind of a confucian moral throughout chinese history in general. The moralizing Confucian literati didn't have very positive views about women most of the time.

this is only in the novel. Liu Bei didn't eat anybody historically. The novel is just really goofy in certain parts. Liu Bei didn't TOUCHDOWN Liu Shan either.

I guess a lot of Liu Bei's dickish antics, thinking about it, could be attributed to the novel then. But you're definitely right, not just then but throughout most of history most "great men" (and women too, I suppose) were kinda assholes.

the story is always less snazzy than the punchline.

Yeah it only happens in the novel. I've never found a historical source for it. It is funny though. I actually wish that happened historically.

All Zhao Yun's SGZ says is

"At the time that the Former Lord was pursued by Duke Cao at Changban, Dangyang, he abandoned his wives and fled south. Zhao Yun cradled the Former Lord’s frail son—the future Latter Lord—and protected the Lady Gan—the mother of the Latter Lord—shielding them from danger. Hence he was promoted to the position of General of the Standard. When the Former Lord entered Shu, Zhao Yun remained in Jingzhou."

The Zhao Yun biezhuan, which some people trust and others do not, elaborates more on the circumstance but still does not mention TOUCHDOWN:

"In the thirteenth year of JianAn (AD 208), Liu Bei was defeated in Changban of Dangyang and was forced to flee south with only tens of cavalry and also had to abandon his family in the process. Upon seeing that, Zhao Yun turned back and headed north into the enemies midst to locate Liu Bei’s family. At that time, someone told Liu Bei that Zhao Yun was heading north to surrender to Cao Cao. Liu Bei reacted by hitting the person with a halberd in his hand and said that Zhao Yun would never abandon him. Not long after, Zhao Yun, despite the dangers, came back carrying the Future Lord (Liu Shan) and also protected the Future Lord’s mother Lady Gan from the dangers. Before the battle of Chibi, Liu Bei gave Zhao Yun the rank of YaMen General (General of the Standard)."

It's funny you say that Kami, 'cause she was. So was Gandhi.
Now, their accomplishments sorta outweigh their assholishness, but they were definitely not people you'd wanna hang out with. There's no accounting for where Teresa's money went, just that she got MILLIONS of dollars, yet it's pretty much unanimous her clinics were uncleanly, slovenly places, and she even said she thought it was "beautiful" to see the poor and sick suffer... and Gandhi HATED black people and homosexuals with a passion, refused to let his wife take penicillin when it could have saved her, and had orgies with little girls (okay it was more "all of you sleep naked with me", he never diddled them, but STILL).

I had both of them over for tea numerous times. Gandhi never put the toilet seat down.
My biggest issue with Ieyasu is that he didn't dispose of Hideyoshi and his pet monkey, Mitsunari, sooner. The world would've been a better place for so many Koreans and poor baby Gracia.
