I don't think hitting your kid with a feather or something slightly harder was ever illegal :XD Perhaps frowned upon and socially unacceptable, but not illegal.

I'm pretty sure CPS, DYFS, DHR, or any agency dedicated to protect children would immediately take action in the case of busted lips or welts, though. Nor would I fault them, because that is classified as physical abuse :ph43r:

The argument for "I turned out fine" has long overstayed its welcome. Define, fine. Hell what is normal?

So, Fallout 4 has a burly bearded man in armor and the option to romance him. Too bad I'll likely end up siding against his faction, but at least I can have Danse in my pants up until then. Unf.

My dad rarely ever handled punishments, my mom always did and she would always threaten us with my dad when we got too out of hand and that would set us straight real quick.

Part of it was cause my dad's punishments were always very physical and they hurt, he never learned how to reign it in. The few times he spanked us or whatever, like he left considerable marks. So my mom never let him punish us unless it got absolutely necessary.

My dad is not a terrible man, he is a great father and provided for us and loved us dearly. He just was a little rough, he didn't have a delicate touch.

And we didnt get spanked often, by either parent, it was rare, but it did happen. It would just have to be a big thing.

I wouldn't say it's a question of turning out alright after it. It's a question of, would you have been any worse if they didn't do it? Or more importantly didn't do it to such an extent from the sounds of it.

My parents rarely hit me, mostly just shouted at me. Once I was in my teens if I pushed it too far I'd get hit, and I think there should be a line that if you cross it's fine to be disciplined in such a way. You need to know there is a limit to things, but for smaller issues, or especially accidental ones, it definitely seems a bit too far to jump to physical punishment.
Obviously banning them from going outside or using things like TV or games consoles works for it too, effect their free time. That was my parents method of punishment. If you have nothing to do you reflect on what you've done a bit more too, or so I found.

Physical discipline is fine at a young age before kids can understand reason. After they get to be tweens and teens, it doesn't seem to work as well.

beat your kids while they're young and won't understand why they're being beaten

get it all out of your system early, before they become strong enough to hit you back

At that point they really don't have any way to understand. They're like animals, they learn well by negative reinforcement. If you burn your hand on a stove, you're not going to touch that stove any more.

Yup, I'm done with YouTube for tonight.

Edit: I lied, went and found this 3 Stooges documentary that I watched eons ago and I find it funny that when they're introducing the Stooges, they make a point NOT to show any clips of Joe Bessar as a stooge but instead they use clips from his appearance in Abbot and Costello.

Edit2: Like, Joe was a great guy, he just wasn't a good Stooge.
