Shu had a couple good stages in XL because Fa Zheng was involved. |

Eh, he was alright. A pity he was only introduced in an XL as he seems very bare bones and almost 1 dimensional. Like Zhu Ran, he has one note that he keeps hitting, but unlike Zhu Ran, he actually seems like he has potential to shine more than he's been allowed to... whereas Zhu Ran's just utterly annoying and flatter than a flake from those flaky biscuits. If I had to list the XL characters in order of my favorite to least favorite, it'd be: Chen Gong Yu Jin Lu Lingqi (for moveset only, personality puts her at the same level as Fa Zheng) Fa Zheng ... ... Hua Xiong Zhu Ran **** you, I really hated Zhu Ran. They had potential with that little ass clown and they ****** it up. Come DW9 they better do him justice and put a REAL ******* rivalry between him and Lu Xun and not this MY FIRE ATTACK IS BETTER THAN YOUR FIRE ATTACK garbage. ANYWAYS, the deed is done. All Shu levels barring any DLC focused ones are done and I won't have to touch them again until DW9. Now onto Jin, then Others, then Lu Bu... |

That's almost complimentary for him. Seriously I had such high hopes for that kid and Koei let me down. #EntitledTwit Anyways, going to reward myself with ice cream for my suffering, then work on my story. |

"We ask you to join, our Lord Liu Bei in building a land of.... benevolence" ![]() Oh the English dubbing had no choice but to follow ZL's mouth flaps, so it created that awkward sentence structure and pause ![]() P.S. I think Fa Zheng and Lingqi will shine more in DW9 when they get more screentime. Lingqi using Lu Bu's DW6 moveset was awesome and she's seksay as hell . fa Zheng's eyebrows are awesome, not used to his moveset though but I like his darker vibe in Shu. In terms of rating the DW8 XL newbies: 1) Lu Lingqi (I ain't the KW perv without putting the ladies first )2) Chen Gong: I still prefer DW6 generic Chen Gong but DW8's is well defined and gets a lot of screen time. His smirk is legendary ![]() 3) Fa Zheng: Eyebrows and darker vibe scaring the Shu benevolence monsters: good stuff ![]() 4) Yu Jin: Used what should be Ji Ling's moveset tbh. His comically serious demeanour could be tweaked a bit, and not enough about his loss and surrender to Guan Yu, but whatever. 5) Zhu Ran: Just annoying ![]() Edited by MeowMeow, Tue Feb 23, 2016 8:01 am.

Yeah I hate Zhu Ran too. I thought Fa Zheng was a nice change of pace, but I agree that he could be a little one note sometimes. Chen Gong was definitely my favorite of the XL characters, and honestly currently my favorite character in the series. |

Well as I said he only seems 1 dimensional because he's only really present in a whoppin', what, 2-3 stages? And even then those levels didn't seem to focus on the character so much as the situation, and anything you got about him being rather devious was just stated as if it were common knowledge and then rushed out. But he definitely has something that I hope will expand on in DW9. Zhu Ran... *shakes head* I guess they could try and fix him too, but now I'm just going to glare at him and see all my hopes and dreams burst into flames. |

1-dimensional seems to be KOEI's forte when it comes to personality. Rarely do the characters develop into better characters. OMM: Ow. My phone just hurt my hand just because I was getting my comb.

I suppose. They seem to be fishing in the same Anime archtype / trope pond as of late. The characters they do good with are usually ones that's been in the game long enough TO develop, or just so happen to be fortunate enough to follow a certain trope that most of their Japanese fans either like or aren't tired of seeing yet. Character development in the Persona series is the best. Probably Squall in Final Fantasy VIII counts as well even though he never knew who his family is. |

OMG its true the warriors games have become more and more anime like over the years! (I'd say from DW6 onwards)Of the newer characters I'd say Sima Zhao actually undergoes character development. Diao Chan did in DW6 but regressed back to "oh my lord Lu Bu" after Jin helped Sima Yi's characterization a lot, he's actually human now ![]() Cao Cao's a strong character Xing Cai could be a strong character at times... especially in DW5 Gan Ning in the older DWs had decent characterization and some character shifts, as with Ling Tong. Chen Gong is 1 dimensional but at least he pulls it off well and is flamboyant about it

Gan Ning's best development, imho, came from DW6 and Special, when they decided to focus more on his rebellious nature and his friendship with Lu Meng (which had been in the series since DW3 though not predominant until about DW5 I think?). His death in Ling Tong's story still gets me as one of the better death scenes in the series for me. If only DW6 wasn't rushed out the door and more characters were at LEAST not cloned... I didn't mind so much that Lu Meng didn't have a story since he was such an important supporting character in three others' stories, but not every character got that treatment. Dammit, DW6... I didn't want to hate you, but good things did come from you. Strikeforce, for example... still favorite side game (hte PS3 version, I couldn't handle the PSP). |

I agree, Gan Ning had fairly good characterization in DW5 and quite strong characterization through the cutscenes in DW6. (I never had special) While I welcome the kingdom based story modes of DW7 and after, (more epic) it does mean many characters get the shaft in comparison. Diao Chan was great in DW6 too (not least her bare midriff ) and I thought she had a very good story progression in DW6. Lu Bu's last stage is still legendary though And Sima Yi's story in DW6 was pretty good, especially the ending The other story modes were just meh ![]() Cao Pi always gets the shaft since DW5, he shone best in WO1 when partnered with Cao Pi's cold contempt and king of snark together was so awesome, too bad KOEI didn't really emphasize them since then in WO games other than a single stage in WO3 (and one awesome cutscene )

In Special, he gets featured in Ling Tong's story (a huge duh, considering they went back and acknowledged him killing Ling Tong's dad, so Ling Tong doesn't just come off as this salty ex like he did in DW6). Lu Meng is constantly getting between the two and trying to keep peace and it's not until Ru Xu Kou that the two finally start making amends, much to Lu Meng's relief. Then Fan Castle happens and before the battle, Lu Meng makes them swear to share a drink together at its conclusion to celebrate their friendship, but of course then Lu Meng dies (recycled flashback from his death in Gan Ning's story), Gan Ning's in no mood for partying (like in DW5), and then Yiling ends with Ling Tong finding a mortally wounded Gan Ning beneath the tree, where he confesses that he's not sure how he's suppose to go on after the death of a friend. Then he dies and Ling Tong's ending his him sitting under said tree, with bells hanging from it and offering a drink to him. I might have missed a few details but it was pretty good. Features one of my favorite cut scenes between the three (until their 3 Stooges moment in DW8) where after Ling Tong and Gan Ning got into a fight, they're just standing there, arms crossed, refusing to even look at one another, and Lu Meng's standing between them with this expression of 'okay, what the **** did I miss?' Seriously, Ling Tong's story alone was enough to soothe most of my woes with that game. |

Thats actually quite tender and filled with heart. I hope KOEI can find the heart to do more scenes like this for all the kingdoms. (DW7 had a lot of heart, for all the gripes about limiting you to one character, the story arcs were filled with pathos. I couldn't help shedding a tear multiple times in DW7) DW8 was brighter because I knew that if I checked Wynter's thread I could change the cutscenes to something bright and happy In dw7 there was that sense of doom that there was nothing you as the player could do about it ![]() Only thing I ask nowadays for DW is to make the last stage to always be "Lu Bu and his small faction vs everyone else in the game" That stage in DW6 was epic

For me it was Dian Wei, Cao Cao and actually ZL, because Jiang Wei was so optimistic about the future and ZL is like "the road is long and steep yet." I dunno I teared up at that line a little because I was going through a rough patch in life at the time (which I won't get into here ) and it fit into my own struggle...

Wei's story was just full of feels that I wasn't ready for or expecting. They were suppose to be the badasses of the 3 Kingdoms and here I am, sobbing my heart out and needing a hug after the deaths of Dian Wei and Xiahou Yuan. Damn. How dare you make me feel, Koei. If I wanted sappy **** I'd go play Shu's story! |
