Man **** Jimmy Whetzel "Ooooh that looks like a Pokeball" ... it's a gachapon capsule "WOW THAT'S MUK!" Ah yes because Pokemon came up with the idea of a slime monster first, right? "THAT'S JUST AN OLD LADY!" If you knew anything about yokai you'd know a lot of them are basically human in appearance, so be thankful they stylized her to that extent. Don't review a video game so heavily laden in Japanese culture if you're going to be ignorant about it lmao. I want to see him play Persona or a similar game and be unable to grasp any of it because it's not Americanized enough for him. Seriously reviews like that are proof that localizers are perhaps more needed than we thought, if only to prevent such ignorant bull****. Edited by Uesugi Kenshin, Mon Apr 4, 2016 5:11 am.

Someone: Don't use golems in your fiction, they're not generic fantasy monsters!! They're from Jewish folklore, so using them is cultural appropriation!!! Me: ... okay but... literally every "generic" fantasy monster or species comes from some facet of folklore... so... unless like you're saying to not use like, djinni, kappa or vampires either... idk what you're trying to accomplish here... Like I can understand being defensive of certain cultural aspects but... Golems? R-really? Edited by Uesugi Kenshin, Mon Apr 4, 2016 6:05 am.

The idea is that if you culturally appropriate something it devalues it and makes it a commodity for the consumption of the Western capitalism machine. For example, if a white girl buys a bindi or Native American-style headdress and wears it as an accessory, it devalues the actual meaning of the bindi for religious South Asian people or Native Americans who wear one. Or that white people who wear dreads or afros are appropriating black people because white people's hair doesn't naturally lend itself towards the style, but black people get fired for having them in spite of it occurring naturally for them. But, I will say, it seems to be an idea that's only shown up in American and Canadian social justice circles, and it seems absent literally everywhere else... so I'm kind of leery of going along with everything people casually say is cultural appropriation. Because honestly I've seen people suggest even eating outside of your culture is cultural appropriation, and while they're on the VERY extreme side of things, it's an example of how far you can go with this **** without thinking critically. As another example of it going too far, someone accused Nicki Minaj of cultural appropriation for wearing a feathered headdress, saying she was appropriating Native American culture....... but she herself is Trinidadian and the headdress was from there, not any North American native culture. Then there was that whole Avril Lavigne thing where people got in an uproar from her appropriating Japanese culture for a song/music video... but she literally made the song for her Japanese fans and the video was shot in Japan by Japanese director/producer, and basically any native Japanese person failed to see the issue. I think it may be something that only effects diaspora and indigenous people who live in colonized countries, as when their culture is devalued, they're further made a mockery of. Whereas if you go to countries like Japan or India or such, the locals gladly share their culture- even put it up for sale. So... yeah. I think saying using golems in your fiction is culturally appropriating is pretty ******* dumb. They're first, not real, and second, are sort of ... not EVIL creatures as they're imbued with the power of God, but can easily go out of control and hurt innocent people, and thirdly, from FOLKLORE, not the actual religious beliefs themselves. Like I can understand getting upset at a disrespectful portrayal of, say, Moses or Muhammed... But GOLEMS? That's like getting flustered at the use of stuff like oni or feathered snakes. |

I will note that cultural appropriation IS a term anthropologists use. It describes phenomena like Japan heavily borrowing Chinese and Korean customs for use in its culture, or the cultural exchanges along the Silk Road. It's up to the user whether it's meant in a neutral, positive, or negative fashion. Oh and sorry, didn't see the explain it to you like you're 5 thing... hmmm... lemme think. |

I think this is as concise as I can be about it. Cultural appropriation is when one person or culture borrows or utilizes a part of another culture, such as customs, iconography, food, religion, architecture, etc. not native to their culture. It's considered a problem by some due to the belief that when elements of a minority culture are used by members of the cultural majority, it is in fact oppressing the minority culture and stripping it of its group identity and intellectual property rights. It's argued by the people who dislike it as disrespectful of the initial culture, and unfair as the person appropriating the cultural concepts does not face discrimination for them as they do, or if they do, they can easily abandon it without abandoning their self identity. Look man, I don't know if it is or not, that's just what everyone keeps saying. Edited by Uesugi Kenshin, Mon Apr 4, 2016 6:39 am.

So basically devalues the meaning of the cultural stuff. Ah yes i can understand it..but i don't think it had to go to that extreme poll. Here in my place if the foreigner wears something like that it basically seen as respecting our culture..guess different people sees different thing. Though there is some extremist stuff in this place..especially those "holier-than-ypu" type of person (There's a singer who wears revealing clothes but made of batik, criticized for being immoral) |
