Hans was obvious to me on the first viewing, though mostly because I RPed a character just like him and was catching all of the hints that he was only saying what he felt she wanted him to say. I mean, the only difference between this character I RPed and him is that he has green eyes and my character had red.

But I think most of the theater figured it out.

Every song in Mulan is great.

LET'S GET DOWN TO BUSINESS

and

ANCESTORS HEAR MY PLEA (or whatever the **** that's called)

are amazing too
I know. Eddie Murphy as Mushu is also amazing. The other voice actor though... not critical enough.

Hans was obvious to me a mile away when I first saw it because there's one part where one of the sisters (**** I'm bad with names) is in the sled with that one dudebro and the dudebro is like, "Wait you want to marry him? You hardly even know him? That's retarded" and it was obvious that this was foreshadowing that Hans was a douche unlike the much more real and grounded dudebro. Like duh.

The only thing I didn't like about Mulan is that it perpetuates bull**** about the Huns which is really misleading. The Huns have nothing to do with China at all. They shoulda been the Xiongnu. Also naming the leader Shanyu is just top kek. That's literally a title for Xiongnu chieftains.

Time for Disney to make some Japanese movie based off Tale of Genji and insert Mongols or Nazis in there or something.

I also had a long discussion with my boyfriend on the completely unnecessary hate Cinderella seems to get as a character.

Like where are people getting the idea she just got everything handed to her? I mean sure she married the prince after only spending a few hours with him, but she was treated like literal dirt by her "family". Her stepsisters completely destroyed that dress she worked hard to make, and then the stepmother locked her up once she learned there was any chance Cinderella might be able to leave. So she deserved her happy ending.

I felt Zootopia's main villain is pretty blatant and the foreshadowing is quite in your face too.
I'm still hoping Zootopia beats Minions though. I dislike those yellow cells thing.

Mulan the cartoon was actually pretty decent.

On top of what you said about the Huns...

-Gunpowder wasn't around in Mulan's time
-They marched past the mountains of Guilin when they were going NORTH... :uh:

-The Great Wall as shown was clearly based off Badaling great wall north of Beijing, but... in Mulans' time, the capital was Chang'An (if it was supposedly in the western Han dynasty...)

-Other than that, I didn't have too many quibbles with it. "I'll make a man out of you" is still amazing even now

And it was a sympathetic portrayal of historical China in Hollywood, which was a plus.

My friend called the Zootopia villain from the previews... which somewhat impresses me because I actually don't remember any of the previews outside of the one at the DMV.

Edit: Or was it looking at the merchandise? I can't remember, but she asked me about it and I confirmed her suspicions.

"I LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!!!"

Pretty much every Mushu line in the first movie is so memorable for me.

Hating on Minions... :nope: I like their gibberish tbh.

I don't really like DM2 either, yes it has some good moment, but Minions are annoying..

I hate and love this. I want to see this version of the movie, but i hate the settings.

Its been a long time since I watched Prince of Egypt (our church went to watch it en masse because it was "Christian".... well, Jewish  )

I liked its portrayal of Pharoah as Moses' best friend. In the older films like the Ten Commandments, Pharoah was your typical "wahahahahaha!" lawful evil villain, but in the cartoon version he was actually portrayed as a decent guy, just misguided. It made the story a LOT more poignant, kudos for that.

Wasn't the original story of Mulan written during the Northern and Southern Kingdoms period (roughly ~Northern Wei times?)? Or maybe Sixteen States/Eastern Jin times?

I confess I never read the original story. I just know that the Huns were total bull**** lol. I never noticed the other stuff but I'm sure there was also other anachronistic bull**** too. You're totally right about gunpowder. I dunno why that didn't cross my mind. That definitely was not around till much later.

you know what disney song I really like, though?

that really brief bit of background music from mulan when she cuts her hair and is preparing to leave
Mulan OST - Short Hair
Heh?
Composed by Jerry Goldsmith, no less. The very same man who composed the scores to the 1978 Star Trek TMP and the 1979 Alien movies. That man needs the same praise as John Williams.

Yeah... And it actually had a kinder Pharoah unlike most of the time which has that generic evil Pharoah... even from Superbook...

The story itself was written in the northern and southern dynasty era, (no exact date due to murky origins) but IIRC it was "set" in the Han dynasty.

gunpowder in the cartoon was amazing but totally nonhistorical

Oh yeah, southern rice paddies in the dry ass Gansu corridor

Anyway, it was a disney production, the Chinese didn't quibble too much. They were happy just to have positive representation at all.

Yes, Eddie Murphy as Mushu was the best part of that film, really
